Chapter 54: 54: Trap Lineup- Part 1
Liam stood frozen where he was as soon as he saw that message.
"Probability of triggering a trap is 100%? What kind of bullshit... no, never mind. I shouldn’t get triggered like this. Is it too late to turn back now?"
There were only a few feet between Liam and the sacred relic. At this point, it would be easier to try and take the sacred relic than to head back.
But Liam knew his luck (and his system’s prediction), so he was not ready to risk his life.
[User is advised to make a choice. Probability of triggering a time-bound trap: 100%]
"Great! So it’s like that. You’re damned if you do, and you’re damned if you don’t. In that case, it would be better for me to try and get a hold of the sacred relic."
Liam sighed as he finally took a step in. The ground sank under his feet, making Liam feel on edge. He knew there was a possibility of this happening, but to actually have it happen made Liam’s heart skip a beat.
[Trap triggered. User needs to get ready to fight.]
The system gave Liam this warning seconds before a huge body was dropped into the temple room he was in.
And this body was not human in any way. The orc looked mindless as it glanced around until it found Liam, and then it decided to raise its club to hit him.
"O-Oi! I need a barrier. I won’t be able to dodge in time."
Liam was ashamed to admit that he was not physically capable enough to dodge that strike in time. He was also ashamed to realize that he had underestimated the giant monster attacking him.
But in his defense, what kind of giant body was capable of moving as fast as this orc did? One second, it had dropped, and the next, it had attacked.
Liam didn’t even have seconds to react to the attack. His barrier collided with the orc’s club and pushed it back.
Orcs were considered low-level creatures with a lot of power but not much brain. That was what Liam remembered from his memory.
He also recalled that they weren’t considered tough to take down... for his past self. But even if Liam had memories of his past life, that didn’t mean he knew how to take down an orc in his current body.
Grrrr
The giant club was smashed against the ground, causing Liam to flinch and pull back before he could get hurt by it. He also had to shield himself repeatedly to avoid injury from the orc.
Liam was successfully able to save himself from the orc this way, but he wasn’t sure how long he could last without attacking.
Not to mention, he was also reaching his physical limit. His arms and legs ached due to the strain they were under.
"I-I need to rest for a minute and cast offensive magic. I should be able to—"
Liam didn’t get to finish his sentence before the ground beneath his feet was broken by the orc’s attack.
Liam stumbled as the ground beneath him cracked and fell away. He barely managed to leap to a stable piece of flooring, his heart pounding in his chest.
The orc, however, was relentless. It roared with primal fury, swinging its massive club in wide arcs that smashed everything in its path.
The temple room shook with each blow, dust and debris falling from the ceiling. Liam knew he couldn’t face this creature in a direct fight.
He was outmatched in strength, speed, and stamina. His only chance of survival lay in outsmarting the beast.
His eyes darted around the room, searching for anything he could use. The temple’s architecture was ancient but intricate, with carvings lining the walls and ornate statues standing in the corners.
These weren’t just decorations—they were part of the temple’s defense mechanism, as the system had warned.
[Suggestion: Utilize environmental traps to neutralize the threat. Probability of success: 78%.]
"Right. Traps it is. Let’s hope I can figure this out before I get smashed into paste"
Liam muttered, wiping the sweat from his brow.
The orc roared again, charging toward him with its club raised high. Liam dove to the side just as the weapon came crashing down, shattering the floor where he’d been standing moments before.
He landed awkwardly, his shoulder scraping against the cold stone, but there was no time to dwell on the pain.
As he scrambled to his feet, Liam’s gaze landed on a series of pressure plates embedded in the floor, each marked with symbols he vaguely recognized.
The symbols corresponded to elemental forces—fire, water, earth, and air.
"I hope this works."
Liam muttered as he sprinted toward the plates. The orc was hot on his heels, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground with every step.
Reaching the pressure plates, Liam jumped onto the one marked with a flame symbol. For a moment, nothing happened, and panic surged through him.
But then, with a low rumble, a portion of the wall slid open, revealing a row of nozzles.
Flames erupted from the nozzles, shooting across the room in a blazing arc. The orc howled in pain as the fire scorched its thick skin. It staggered back, swinging its club wildly in an attempt to extinguish the flames.
"Yes!"
Liam exclaimed, pumping his fist. But his victory was short-lived. The fire wasn’t enough to take the creature down, only to anger it further.
The orc turned its bloodshot eyes on Liam, its roar shaking the very air around them.
"Oh, come on! Give me a break!"
Liam groaned, darting toward another pressure plate. This one was marked with a water symbol. He stomped on it, and moments later, jets of water burst from the walls, drenching the room.
Things were not easy for Liam, but he was trying his best to take care of himself and the Orc. it was just...his luck acting up at times and making Liam’s work harder than it had to be.
