Chapter 52: Into the Temple - Part 2

Chapter 52: 52: Into the Temple - Part 2

"Scan your ID here, and you shall be allowed entry to the upper floors."

Liam looked at the security system in front of him with narrowed eyes. He could see magic pulsing around the machine, making it different from any invention he had seen before.

[Update: The scanner is a magical item that prompts different responses for different magical items scanned. It also determines normal humans from magicians, causing different elevators to arrive for different IDs.]

The system explained, making Liam sigh in understanding.

It made sense that a system like this would be needed in order to separate ordinary people from magicians.

The Temple of Lunaris was situated in the center of the city, and it was also a high-class hotel. It was a given that it would attract just as many wealthy people as it would magicians.

Humans were always attracted to the allure of the unknown, and this place was no different.

"Listen, the ID I brought you all in with belongs to the normal category. It will take you to the upper levels where ’normal’ people mingle. It’s your task to find a way down and retrieve the Sacred Relic. Signal me once it’s time to get out of here."

The guide reminded their team, and Liam finally noticed how scared the trio behind him looked.

Sweat covered their faces, and they had even gone pale after hearing the guide speak. It was clear they were being affected by this place far more than Liam expected.

’Is it because of these magical ruins? I do recall seeing some of them used in other repelling spells, but are they truly that powerful? Why do I not feel anything?

Liam gave a quick glance at the symbols around him, and he felt the magic trying to affect him. But every time it came close, Liam felt it retreat, almost as if it were alive.

It stung a little when the magic tried to feel him out, but it didn’t seem like Liam was going to get hurt... for the most part.

"H-Hey, wait! What do you mean by that? You’re just going to abandon us among the normal humans and ask us to find a way to the lower levels? Have you lost your mind? How can we ever... Ugh! Have you looked at the security?"

Selene complained, and her other two companions seemed to have similar thoughts. Their faces looked pale and uncomfortable.

However, it didn’t seem as if the guide cared much for their discomfort. He just shrugged and looked at the trio standing beside Liam.

"This wouldn’t be called a test if it were easy, right? Now, get changed into these clothes and act like you belong in the crowd until you find a way to head down. You have tonight to carry out this mission before we fail you."

The guide didn’t seem to care about any complaints he heard, and Liam had a feeling it would be better for him to follow orders.

He was the first one to change into a high-neck sweatshirt that felt far too fancy and a pair of jeans. He looked like a rich and unkempt young master.

The other three were dressed similarly, and it didn’t take long for the guide to drop them into a place filled with wasted teenagers partying their night away.

Liam could instantly tell that this place was dangerous, but unfortunately, he couldn’t leave if he wanted to stay alive.

’Tsk, if only I had a way to get this collar off my neck—’

"Hey, handsome. You look lonely tonight. Would you like to spend the night with me having fun?"

A woman walked toward Liam, her eyes fixed on his collar. She had clearly misunderstood Liam’s bind as a form of... preference, and her voice indicated as much.

Thankfully, Liam knew how to get out of this situation.

"Sorry, I cannot. I’m waiting for someone to come and fetch me."

The expression on the woman’s face changed in an instant, and she immediately looked annoyed. She had clearly had one too many drinks, but she still managed to control herself.

"Tsk. All the exciting ones are taken... Ugh..."

The woman finally left, and Liam knew it was time for him to start making his move.

What he needed to do was not find a way down this building but find a way to remove the collar from his neck. But it wasn’t going to be an easy task.

"First, let’s find a phone and call home. Those bastards have my phone wiretapped, so I’ll need to use the lobby phone to make a call."

Liam headed toward the elevator to go down, and he could feel the guide looking at him with disappointed eyes.

Thankfully, the man didn’t follow Liam, and he was able to reach the lobby in time.

Liam didn’t get to enjoy his freedom for long before a guard caught him loitering around and took him into custody.

"Hey, kid, what do you think you’re doing? Don’t you know it’s prohibited to move around... and what is this? Is that a magical collar? Were you trying to do something funny? Tsk, I’ll need to get this off you."

The guard spoke in a tense voice and quickly grabbed Liam’s neck to hold him still.

Liam didn’t know—and didn’t want to know—the reason behind the guard having a metal-cutting tool with him, but Liam made sure to stay still as the guard worked.

Each second felt like agony, and Liam’s heart skipped a beat as he held himself still for the guard to work. Finally, the collar was off, and Liam felt his magic flow freely through his body again.

"All right, kid, now that it’s out of the way, why don’t we talk about what you were doing out on the floor? If you try to hide anything, then I—"

That was the last thing the guard heard before he was knocked out.

Liam sighed in relief as he caught the unconscious guard. This was one thing out of his system..for now.
