Chapter 51: 51: Into the Temple - Part 1
Victor, Bianca, and Asger arrived at the abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, where they believed Liam had been held captive.
The building loomed before them, a decrepit structure with shattered windows and rusting steel beams. Despite its dilapidated appearance, Victor’s sharp eyes caught faint magical residue lingering in the air.
"This is definitely the place. Now, shall we head inside? I am sure our guest is waiting for us."
Victor muttered, his voice calm and composed as always. He stepped forward, his long coat billowing behind him.
Bianca adjusted her gloves, her expression determined.
"Let’s keep this quick. We don’t know how much time Liam has."
Asger, towering over the other two, cracked his knuckles, his crimson eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.
"No need to drag this out. I’ll make them talk."
Victor held up a hand, stopping Asger.
"No need for brute force—yet. Let’s see how cooperative they are first."
The trio pushed open the creaking metal door, and the sound echoed ominously through the empty halls.
Inside, a group of rough-looking men, clearly the hired muscle for some operation, sat around a table playing cards. At the sight of the intruders, they scrambled to their feet, their expressions a mix of confusion and alarm.
"Who the hell are you people?"
One of the goons demanded, reaching for a weapon.
Victor’s gaze swept over the group, his posture relaxed but commanding.
"You don’t need to know who we are. What you do
need to know is that we’re here for answers. Where’s Liam Sanders?"He said smoothly.
The goons exchanged nervous glances, clearly unsettled by Victor’s confident demeanor. One of them, a burly man with a scar running down his cheek, stepped forward.
"We don’t know who you’re talking about. You’d better leave before things get ugly."
Asger’s lips curled into a feral grin, and his claws began to emerge. His scales shimmered faintly under the dim light as his rage started to boil over.
"You don’t know? Do you think I’m in the mood for lies, human?"
He growled, his voice deep and guttural.
The goons took a step back, their faces pale as they realized they were dealing with something far beyond their pay grade.
"Calm down, Asger. We’ll get what we need without turning this place into a battlefield."
Bianca said, stepping between him and the terrified men. She placed a hand on his chest, her tone firm but soothing.
Asger hesitated, his claws retracting as he took a deep breath.
"Fine"
He muttered, his voice still filled with barely restrained fury.
Bianca turned to the goons, her expression cold.
"You’d better start talking. If you don’t, he might not hold back next time."
"We really don’t know! The guy you’re looking for—Liam—was here, but he’s gone now. They moved him to some other location. We don’t know where!"
One of the men blurted out, his voice trembling.
Victor raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable.
"Convenient. It seems you’re of no use to us" he said dryly.
The goons flinched at his words, but Bianca didn’t waste any more time. She reached into her satchel and pulled out a small glass flask filled with a swirling silver liquid.
"What’s that?"
Asger asked, watching her with curiosity.
"It’s a locator magic. I prepared it in case we needed to track someone. Since Liam was here not long ago, it should still work."
Bianca explained, holding the flask up to the light.
She uncorked the flask and poured a single drop onto the floor. The liquid spread out like a living thing, forming intricate patterns that pulsed with faint light. Moments later, the patterns shifted and aligned, pointing in a specific direction.
"It’s pointing toward the Temple of Lunaris
. That’s where they’ve taken him.","
Bianca said, her eyes narrowing.
Victor nodded, his expression thoughtful.
"The Temple of Lunaris. That explains the magical residue in the air. Looks like someone wants our dear guest dead."
"Then we’re wasting time here. Let’s go"
Asger said, his voice resolute.
Bianca pocketed the flask and followed as Victor led the way out of the warehouse. The goons, still too shocked to react, watched in stunned silence as the trio left without so much as a backward glance.
The journey to the Temple of Lunaris was tense. The closer they got, the more oppressive the air became. The magical energy emanating from the temple was palpable, even to someone like Bianca, who wasn’t as sensitive to such things.
Victor, however, seemed entirely unaffected. He strolled casually, hands in his pockets, as if they were on a leisurely walk.
"Do you think Liam’s still alive?"
Bianca asked, breaking the silence.
Victor glanced at her, his gaze calm but unreadable.
"He’s alive. But whether he is mentally stable or not is still up for toss. Personally, I would say that Liam must have a will of steel to still be sane."
Bianca nodded, her grip tightening on the hilt of her dagger.
"Then we need to hurry."
Asger, walking slightly ahead of them, clenched his fists.
"If they’ve hurt him, there won’t be a place on this earth where they can hide from me."
When they finally reached the temple, it was nothing like they expected. Instead of a grand, ancient structure, it looked more like a fortress. The temple was surrounded by high walls etched with glowing runes, and a single massive gate stood as the only entrance.
Victor stopped a few paces away from the gate, studying the runes.
"Interesting."
he murmured.
"What is it?"
Bianca asked.
"These runes are a deterrent. They’re designed to repel anyone with malicious intent. Whoever designed this place knew what they were doing."
Victor explained.
"Is this your first time here? You sound far too surprised to come here."
Bianca asked but Victor did not notice. Instead, he was busy checking the ruins around him and trying to figure them out. He was patient, but not everyone was as patient as him.
"So how do we get in?"
Asger asked impatiently.
Victor smirked.
"Leave that to me."
He approached the gate and placed a hand on its surface. The runes flared brightly for a moment, and then, as if recognizing him, dimmed and faded away. The gate creaked open, revealing a long, shadowy corridor.
"After you."
Victor said, gesturing for the others to follow.
As they stepped inside, the oppressive energy of the temple seemed to wrap around them, pressing down on their senses.
"By the way, why did we enter from the back-gate again? We are all certified and well-known. Couldn’t we have entered from the front door?"
Bianca asked after a while in a curious voice, but she only got an amusing smile as a result of her quarry.
