Chapter 50: 50: A Test - Part 3

"Excuse me, but where are we headed to? Is this really the way to Lunaris’s Temple? Aren’t temples usually located outside cities and in abandoned places?"

Liam asked curiously. He felt curious to know more about this.

Most of the movies, games, and other works of fiction always made temples out to be some mystic places that were hard to get to and usually had forces protecting them.

"What is that idiot saying? You sound as if you are new to magic. Even kids don’t ask questions like these."

Selene, one of the other participants, laughed as she heard Liam’s question. It became evident to him that he had asked an obvious question that he should not have.

But Selene’s laugh did not answer Liam’s question. It only served to confuse him more.

Thankfully, their guide was much more accommodating, and he ignored the trio snickering at Liam before answering him.

"From ancient times, temples and places with magic have been the focus of human settlements. These places are rich in nature and provide natural nourishment. Even those who have no magic can feel the effect. As a result, a settlement ends up forming around these ’temples.’"

That did make sense, but Liam also had a feeling that the ’temple’ being referred to here was not a traditional temple he was used to.

The city was getting brighter by the second. It was clear that they were slowly entering the heart of the city.

"We are here. Take your first look at the Temple of Lunaris. It is a place that can become your grave if you are not careful."

The guide spoke in a secretive voice. If his goal was to scare the contestants he was with, then it had succeeded.

Liam noticed how the other three that came with him looked tense. It was clear that they had no idea what they were in for. But Liam was more than aware of what was happening.

The system warned Liam, and he was well aware that the system was right. He should not enter the Temple...or rather, the hotel he was brought to. But he did not have a choice in this matter.

As long as he had the collar around his neck, his life was not his own. Instead, it belonged to the guide who brought him here.

Well, let’s just head in and see what happens.

The moment Liam stepped inside, the air grew heavier.

A strange sensation swept over him, like a thousand invisible eyes watching his every move.

The hall was vast and impossibly elegant, its high ceilings adorned with intricate golden runes that pulsed softly. The walls shimmered with a pearlescent glow, and the floor beneath them looked like black marble, so polished it reflected their figures perfectly.

The others glanced around nervously, their unease palpable. Even Selene, who had been quick to laugh earlier, now kept her head low.

"Keep your heads down and stay sharp. This place isn’t just under the Temple’s magic—it’s also under the International Magius Society’s watchful eye. They monitor everything that happens here."

The guide muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible.

Liam didn’t flinch at the guide’s warning. He wasn’t particularly scared, but he couldn’t say the same for the others. He noticed how their steps faltered slightly, their gazes darting around the room as though expecting to be caught any second.

"What happens if they catch us?"

Kieran whispered.

The guide’s lips curled into a thin smile.

"If they catch you? Well, let’s just say the Society doesn’t tolerate trespassers, especially not those with forged passes. They’re not known for their mercy."

Selene visibly tensed, and the others exchanged uneasy glances. Liam, however, kept his composure.

He didn’t know much about the International Magius Society, but he had a feeling they were a force no one wanted to cross.

As they moved deeper into the grand hall, the sound of their footsteps echoed unnervingly. At the far end of the room stood a massive security checkpoint.

Two imposing figures dressed in black and gold uniforms stood by, their eyes glowing faintly—a telltale sign they were using some kind of magical enhancement.

The guide stopped abruptly and turned to face them.

"Remember what I said: stay quiet, follow my lead, and do not—under any circumstances—draw attention to yourselves."

The group nodded, though Liam could see the tension in their eyes. He shifted his gaze to the security guards ahead. Their presence alone radiated authority, and Liam could tell they weren’t ordinary guards.

As they approached the checkpoint, one of the guards held up a hand, stopping them. "Identification," the guard said in a deep, commanding voice.

The guide reached into his coat and pulled out a small stack of shimmering cards.

"Here are our passes."

He said smoothly, handing them over. His tone was casual, but Liam noticed the slight tightening of his jaw.

The guard took the cards and examined them closely. A faint golden light emanated from his eyes as he scanned each one, his expression unreadable.

Liam’s heart remained steady, but he couldn’t ignore the nervous energy radiating from the others. The silence stretched on, broken only by the faint hum of magic in the air.

Finally, the guard handed the passes back.

"You may proceed."

He said, stepping aside.

The guide gave a curt nod and gestured for the group to follow him. As they walked past the checkpoint, Liam felt the weight of the guards’ gazes linger on them, as if they were being measured and judged.

Once they were out of earshot, the guide let out a soft sigh.

"First hurdle cleared. But don’t get cocky. That was the easy part. The real challenge starts now."

He said, though his voice lacked relief.

Selene whispered to the person next to her.

"How did those passes even work? I thought the Society’s checks were supposed to be foolproof."

"They are. But there’s always a way to fool a system if you know it well enough. And I know this one better than most."

The guide said without turning around.

Liam remained quiet, his eyes scanning the surroundings. He didn’t trust the guide, but for now, he had no choice but to follow. The faint glow of runes lining the walls seemed to shift and ripple, almost as if they were alive.

The feeling of being watched never left him. It clung to his skin, making the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. He didn’t know if it was the temple’s magic, the Society’s surveillance, or something else entirely.

The guide led them down a long corridor, the light growing dimmer with every step.

"Keep your wits about you. This is where things get tricky. The temple will test you in ways you don’t expect."

He said.

Liam’s brow furrowed. He glanced at the others, their nervous expressions mirroring his own thoughts. What exactly had they gotten themselves into?

As they rounded a corner, the corridor opened into another vast chamber. In the center stood a massive archway carved from obsidian, its surface etched with glowing runes that pulsed like a heartbeat.

"This is the gateway to the first trial. Once you step through, there’s no turning back."

The guide announced.

The others hesitated, their fear evident. Liam, however, took a deep breath and stepped forward. Whatever lay ahead, he knew he couldn’t afford to falter.
