Chapter 49: 49: A Test - Part 2

Tap

The sound of someone tapping their feet echoed loudly across the room, causing the other three to look at the source. The air was tense, and the magic flickering around the room made everyone restless.

But even so, everyone tried to keep clear of the half-dragon, who looked ready to go on a rampage at any second.

"Oi! Let me out of these bonds right now. Do you insignificant humans not realize the kind of entity you are facing? I, Azgarethorax Malfiros, the Abyssal Wyrm of Eternal Desolation, will be your end if you do not—mufff—"

The loud yells of the half-dragon were muffled by a powerful spell, and the one who cast that spell quickly smiled at the people without a worry in his eyes.

"Let’s ignore Lord Azgarethorax for now and focus on the main topic. So, as far as I understand, a Warden ’accidentally’ made a contract with a half-dragon and then got kidnapped. As a result, we have an angry half-dragon on our hands, right?"

Victor asked with a smile. Despite the tenseness of the situation, it seemed as if the man had no care in the world.

"That’s what it looks like. We tried to track down Liam Sanders, but that would take some time for us to do. It would be better to ask the people who kidnapped him where they took him."

Elder Erin was far more grounded and realistic in his approach to this topic. However, he had a feeling that Victor had a different method of finding Liam in mind.

Victor Rhemington was an enigma in their world. He had held the rank of #1 magician ever since the International Magius Society had existed, and no one knew how old that man was.

But the weirdest thing about Victor was not his seemingly old age or even his magic that was far beyond what this world had seen, but the fact that he was utterly uninterested in politics and human workings.

His eyes always looked at people with pity, and it seemed as if he was waiting for the world to end.

Truly, he was an enigmatic man. But something about Victor reminded Elder Erin of Liam. They both had similar feelings to them.

Ugh, my old age must be catching up to me. I am beginning to think that this shrewd man is similar to that innocent Warden who got caught up in our mess. I need to apologise to Liam for this.

Bianca noticed the tension, but unlike the elders, she was far more focused on the topic at hand. Liam needed to be saved, and she reminded everyone of that.

"Hey, we can have our stand-off and talk later. For now, we should focus on trying to find Boss...I mean Liam. Thankfully, these people told us what our starting point would be."

Hearing Bianca talk made Asger agitated, and he struggled against his binds even harder.

Elder Erin sighed as he heard Bianca’s words, and it brought his mind back in place.

"You are right. We do need to hurry up and rescue Liam. We should all storm that place...or I can go and beat them all up!"

Aria spoke up. She had been trying to follow the situation, but all this sounded too complicated for her mind. What she did know was that her fist could resolve everything.

Her offer was genuine, but Elder Erin rubbed his forehead, almost as if he was in pain.

"Hmm, that is a good idea on paper, but you are all forgetting something crucial! The top 50 magicians swore an oath to not affect normal people and Wardens unless it’s a worldwide emergency. As much as I want to help Liam right away, we need permissions and make records before we can do anything about it."

Elder Erin sounded disappointed, and Aria looked confused.

"Ah! Did we sign something like that? I don’t remember...I always just blast what I want, and nothing happens."

Aria complained back, and Elder Erin had a bitter expression on his face. The female had no idea how lucky she was to have her amount of magical reserves.

Because of carelessness and lack of social awareness, Aria Duskwood was constantly under the contract’s bindings, and she had not even realized it yet. Elder Erin had no intention of telling her either.

"Unfortunately, you will have to care this time, Aria. This is not a small matter, and we—"

"I can do it. I am not in the top 10, so I did not sign any contract. I can buy us some time."

Bianca proposed, now looking determined. Elder Erin had a hard look on his face, and he did not look pleased with Bianca’s offer.

"This is no matter for kids, Bianca. I understand your feelings—"

"Hoh! I think it is a good idea. I think I will join you, kid. I was itching for a fight and a chance to let loose. Besides, you will need someone to control this loose cannon, so that might as well be me."

Victor offered, and everyone else looked at him as if he had gone mad.

"I understand that you want to help, but even you are not above the contract, Victor—"

"Contract? Ah, did I not tell you? I never signed that crap. The council did tell me to, but I was too busy munching pie to pay them any mind."

The silence in the room felt like a bomb had been dropped. All three people in the room looked at Victor as if he had told them that the world was ending tomorrow.

Finally, Elder Erin rubbed his forehead and sighed, breaking the silence.

"For some reason, I feel like I should have known this would happen. I don’t even feel shocked at this point."

Elder Erin’s words only caused Victor to smile.

______

Somewhere in the facility, Liam followed the trio and their boss toward the Temple of Lunaris. He expected the car to go somewhere outside the city and into a forest, but the car taking them to the site turned toward the city center.

"Excuse me, but where are we headed to? Is this really the way to Lunaris’s Temple—"
