Chapter 135: 135: Called in- Part 2

The morning air was crisp, and Liam, Asger, and Elder Erin made their way to the meeting location.

As soon as they arrived, a stern-looking officer stepped outside to greet them. He barely spared Liam a glance before his eyes landed on Elder Erin. His face paled slightly.

"Nico Vale, come with me,"

The officer said, his tone rough. He then reached out, gripping Liam’s arm in a way that was unnecessarily harsh.

Asger, who had been silent up until now, moved faster than anyone could react. His small but sharp teeth sank into the man’s wrist.

"AHH! WHAT THE—?!"

The officer shrieked, stumbling backward in panic. He clutched his wrist as his face turned an alarming shade of white.

Liam simply watched, unimpressed, while Elder Erin sighed as if this were all very predictable.

"I-Is it poisonous?! Am I going to die?!"

The officer stammered, looking from Elder Erin to Liam in horror.

Elder Erin shook his head, his voice calm but firm.

"No, you won’t die. But only if you behave and show respect toward us."

The man gulped, his fear evident, and quickly straightened up.

"I-I see! R-Right this way, please!"

He stuttered, stepping aside and motioning for them to enter.

Asger, still perched on Liam’s shoulder, flicked his tail in irritation.

"Tch, all this fuss over nothing. I’m not even venomous."

He muttered.

Liam smirked.

"You’d think you just sentenced the guy to death with how scared he was."

Bianca would have laughed at this entire scenario if she had been there.

The trio followed the officer into the building, the atmosphere growing heavier with each step. Inside, the place was eerily quiet, the air thick with tension.

Several other officers eyed them warily as they passed, though none dared to say anything with Elder Erin present.

Finally, they reached a dimly lit room where Ethan was being held.

Ethan was sitting at a table, his hands bound with enchanted cuffs, looking worse for wear.

His once-pristine uniform was wrinkled, and his expression was eerily neutral—too neutral for someone in his situation.

The moment Liam entered, Ethan’s eyes locked onto him. A slow, unsettling smile crept onto his face.

"You actually came."

Ethan murmured, his voice hoarse yet oddly pleased.

Liam crossed his arms.

"You refused to talk to anyone but me. That’s quite the ego you’ve got."

Ethan chuckled, shaking his head slightly.

"Oh, it’s not about ego. It’s just that you’re the only one who might actually understand."

Liam frowned but said nothing, waiting for Ethan to elaborate.

Elder Erin stood off to the side, observing silently, while Asger growled lowly from Liam’s shoulder, clearly unhappy to be in Ethan’s presence.

"You saw it, didn’t you?"

Ethan continued, leaning forward slightly.

"The transformation. The raw power. Tell me, Liam, do you still think I was wrong?"

Liam narrowed his eyes.

"Zane lost control. He nearly killed people. That wasn’t power. That was chaos."

Ethan scoffed.

"Only because he wasn’t prepared. But with time, he could have—"

"—Destroyed himself? Or did you think you could actually control something like that?"

Liam cut in sharply.

For the first time, Ethan hesitated. His gaze flickered, doubt creeping into his expression, but he quickly masked it with a smirk.

"You wouldn’t understand. Not yet."

Liam sighed, already feeling tired of this conversation.

"Then why call me here? If you’re so convinced that you were right, what do you want from me?"

Ethan leaned back in his chair, a knowing glint in his eyes.

"I wanted to see what kind of person you really are. And now, I think I know."

Liam felt a strange sense of unease at those words. Ethan wasn’t acting like someone who had lost—he was acting like someone who had confirmed something important.

Before Liam could press for more answers, the door opened, and one of the officers stepped in.

"Time’s up."

Ethan chuckled.

"Well, I guess that’s it, then. See you around, Nico Vale."

Liam stiffened. Ethan had emphasized the fake name, as if to prove that he knew exactly who Liam really was.

Liam turned to leave without another word, but as he walked out, a single thought lingered in his mind.

What exactly had Ethan figured out?

Liam had already turned toward the door, ready to leave Ethan behind, but the man’s voice called out one last time.

"Liam."

Something in Ethan’s tone—less mocking, less smug—made Liam pause. He turned back, meeting Ethan’s weary eyes.

Ethan inhaled deeply, his hands clenched into fists as he stared at Liam like he was trying to solve a puzzle.

"How did you do it?"

Liam arched an eyebrow.

"Do what?"

Ethan let out a frustrated breath.

"How did you fake it? The ability to absorb magic. It’s not something just anyone can do. You should’ve been destroyed by the overload, but instead, you controlled it like it was nothing. That shouldn’t be possible unless you were one of us."

Liam tilted his head slightly, studying Ethan’s expression. The man wasn’t gloating anymore. He wasn’t even accusing Liam of deception. He genuinely wanted an answer.

A slow smirk played at Liam’s lips.

"I never faked anything. I’ve always been able to do it."

He shrugged.

Ethan’s body visibly trembled at that answer. His hands, once clenched, now shook slightly as his breath came out uneven.

A hollow laugh escaped him before he slumped forward, gasping as if something had just crushed his spirit.

"You mean... I had it all wrong?"

He whispered, his voice barely above a breath.

Liam didn’t reply. He had no idea what Ethan had assumed, but the realization seemed to break something inside the man.

Ethan let out a shaky chuckle, his eyes dark and unfocused.

"If I had known someone like you existed... I never would have done it. None of it. I was chasing something I thought was impossible. But you... You make it look so easy."

He let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head.

Liam frowned.

"You don’t get to use that as an excuse."

Ethan flinched at Liam’s words but didn’t argue. He simply exhaled heavily, finally looking like a man who had lost everything.

Liam had nothing else to say to him. Without another word, he turned and exited the room.
