Chapter 115: 115: Build to Last- Part 3
Back in Liam’s part of the dungeon, Asger suddenly tensed. His sharp eyes glowed faintly, and his small body stiffened.
"We’ve got company."
He muttered.
Liam’s grip on his weapon tightened.
"More of them?"
Asger nodded.
"Yeah. A group this time. And their magic isn’t weak."
Liam clicked his tongue in frustration. He had wanted to keep a low profile, but it seemed fate had other plans. He considered his options. Running blindly through the dungeon wasn’t smart—there was always the risk of running into a powerful monster.
"We should leave before they find us."
Liam suggested.
Asger huffed.
"I could take them."
"No. We don’t know how strong they are, and we don’t know if they have reinforcements. If they’re looking for that guy, it means they’re organized. Fighting them now could make things worse."
Liam shot him a sharp look.
Asger crossed his arms, looking annoyed, but he didn’t argue. He understood the logic in Liam’s words, even if he didn’t like it.
"Fine. But if they come too close, I’m not holding back."
Liam nodded.
The two quickly made their way through the dungeon, avoiding areas where the group’s magic signatures were strongest.
Liam moved swiftly, relying on his senses to guide him away from danger. He had memorized most of the dungeon’s layout from studying maps beforehand, so he had a decent idea of where to go.
Asger, despite his earlier bravado, remained quiet and alert, his keen eyes watching their surroundings for any signs of movement.
They passed through a dark tunnel, the walls damp with moisture. Liam could hear the distant sounds of creatures scuttling in the shadows, but none of them dared approach. The magic surrounding the dungeon pulsed faintly, reacting to their presence.
Liam kept his pace steady, making sure they weren’t leaving too many traces behind. If the group was skilled enough, they might still be able to track him, but he was hoping to buy himself enough time to escape unnoticed.
As they reached an intersection, Asger suddenly tensed.
"They’re getting closer."
Liam clenched his jaw. He could sense it too. The group was spreading out, sweeping through the area in search of their missing member. If they weren’t careful, they would be cornered.
"We need to move faster."
Asger nodded, and the two of them broke into a sprint.
Just as they turned a corner, Liam skidded to a stop. He could hear footsteps approaching from the opposite direction.
"Damn it."
He muttered under his breath.
Asger glanced up at him.
"What now?"
Liam quickly looked around, searching for a place to hide. Spotting a narrow crevice in the dungeon wall, he grabbed Asger and pressed himself against it, masking his presence with a subtle use of magic.
The footsteps grew louder.
Within seconds, two hunters stepped into view. They were talking in hushed voices, their eyes scanning the area.
"You sure this is the right direction?"
One of them asked.
The other nodded.
"Yeah. His magic traces lead this way."
Liam held his breath, forcing his heartbeat to remain steady. Asger was completely still in his arms, his body coiled like a predator ready to strike.
The hunters paused for a moment, their gazes sweeping over the area. One of them frowned, rubbing his chin.
"Feels like something’s off..."
Liam tensed. If they found him now, things would get messy.
Luckily, before the man could investigate further, a loud screech echoed through the dungeon.
The hunters immediately snapped their attention toward the sound.
"A monster?"
One of them muttered.
"Could be. Come on, let’s check it out."
With that, the two quickly moved away.
Liam exhaled slowly, only relaxing once their footsteps had completely faded.
"That was close."
He whispered.
Asger smirked.
"They’re not as sharp as they think they are."
Liam gave him a look.
"Don’t get cocky. We’re not out of danger yet."
He knew they had only delayed the inevitable. The group would continue searching, and it was only a matter of time before they realized that something—or someone—was eliminating their members.
And when that moment came, Liam needed to be ready.
Liam exhaled slowly, steeling himself. The traffickers were closing in, their magical signatures growing stronger with every passing second.
He had managed to evade them so far, but he knew it was only a matter of time before they realized he was the one responsible for their missing comrade. Hiding wasn’t going to work forever.
"I’m done running."
Liam muttered under his breath.
Asger’s eyes gleamed with excitement.
"Finally. I was getting bored."
Liam ignored him, already focusing on laying out a trap. He extended his magic subtly, weaving it into the environment without making it obvious.
His strategy was simple—lure the traffickers into a confined space where he would have the upper hand. He mapped out the terrain in his mind, choosing a pathway with multiple choke points.
First, he used ice magic to subtly change the ground’s texture, making certain areas slick and unstable.
He followed up with a few well-placed illusion spells to create false openings, leading his pursuers where he wanted them to go.
Lastly, he set small magical tripwires—once they crossed a certain point, the real fight would begin.
Liam then positioned himself at the end of the path, making sure to leave just enough traces of his magic for them to sense. He didn’t have to wait long.
"There! His trail leads this way!"
One of the traffickers shouted.
Liam smirked. Right where I want you.
The first group rushed in, their leader stepping forward cautiously. He could sense something was off, but it was too late. The moment they crossed the threshold, Liam snapped his fingers.
A surge of ice erupted beneath their feet, freezing their movements. Before they could react, Liam struck, sending a blast of wind magic to knock them off balance.
Some stumbled, others cursed, but none of them were prepared for the follow-up—shards of ice raining down like daggers.
Asger cackled.
"Oh, this is fun!"
Liam remained focused. One group was down, but more were coming. Time to finish this.
