Chapter 169 - 169 164 Merchant Corps
Chapter 169: Chapter 164 Merchant Corps Chapter 169: Chapter 164 Merchant Corps “Ding-a-ling!” The crisp sound of bells echoed in the wind, as a not-so-small group leisurely traveled through the trade road carved out in the dense forest.
This was a caravan with over a dozen lizard-drawn carts. Yes, that’s right, lizard-drawn carts. Instead of horses, these carts were pulled by giant lizards close to four meters long, with black and yellow wrinkled skin. Each of these lizards had a large copper bell hanging from its neck.
“Leader Sandro, make sure your men are on high alert. We should be able to reach Black Rock Town before dark today. I don’t want any setbacks. Work hard now, and tonight I’ll treat your men to a feast with the money I make from selling these goods,” said the fat man at the head of the caravan, leaning against a pile of goods three meters tall, to the brawny man walking at the front of the group, riding a horned horse, and carrying a heavy sword on his back.
“Boys! You heard the man, big merchant Glen is treating us to a feast tonight. Stay sharp! Any slip ups and you won’t get to eat,” yelled the brawny man carrying the heavy sword as he turned around to address the caravan behind him.
“Understood, boss!”
“No worries!”
… All the adventurers on horned horses spread out at the front, back, and sides of the caravan, brandishing their knives and bows, grew more excited at hearing about the feast. They became more alert, their attention now on high.
“Oh, Glen, we’ve teamed up before, you still worry about us?” A skinny shadow darted out from the bushes on the side of the path, landing beside Glen within a few leaps. Leaning on Glen’s shoulder with a dagger in hand, he said with a grin.
“Oh, you damn rascal, get your hand off me! The blood on it almost dripped on me!” Seeing a dagger just inches away from his neck, merchant Glen was not frightened. On the contrary, he got angry at the sight and smell of the tainted blood on it, and yelled at the skinny shadow beside him.
“And what if it dripped?”
“You know how expensive this outfit is? If it gets dirty, you owe me at least one gold coin.”
“One gold coin? Who are you kidding? These rags you’re wearing wouldn’t sell for more than a copper coin.”
“A copper coin? I’ll give you a silver coin and you buy me ten sets of this outfit, keep the spare change, what do you say?”
… While the merchant and the skinny shadow bickered, the cart drivers, the helpers, the adventurers, everyone laughed and enjoyed the scene. The caravan was filled with cheerful laughter.
“Okay, Balun, enough playing around! Tell me, is there any big beast in the forest?” The leader of the adventurer group, Sandro, who was leading the caravan, turned towards Balun, their team’s only thief, and their “eyes”.
“No big beasts, boss.” Thief Balun took his hands off the chubby merchant’s shoulders, “only encountered a few goblins, all taken care of by me.”
“That’s good then!” Sandro nodded his head. It was normal to not come across any big beasts here. The trade road had been swept by strong individuals during its creation. He had already traversed this road with his team several times without encountering any significant danger.
Caravans traveling up and down the route would often eliminate any slightly threatening creatures, such as aggressive beasts.
But nothing stays the same forever. Just as Sandro thought this escort mission might end without a hitch.
The horned horses ridden by the adventurers and the lizards pulling the carts started to become restless. Then, “Boom! Boom! Boom!” The ground trembled. In the distance, the trees fell one after another, as if a new path was being gradually torn through the woods by an unseen force.
“Heavy Cavalry!” such a momentum made Sandro, the rugged leader, change his color instantly. He recalled a terrifying scene of a Cavalry Corps led by a great noble, boasting nearly a hundred heavy cavalry, charging together.
However, even that kind of momentum couldn’t compare to the sight before him, because even the Heavy Cavalry couldn’t charge in the jungle. So, the rugged man, opened his throat and bellowed.
“Enemy attack, defend.”
The whole caravan stirred instantly… but before the caravan could set up a proper defense, from within the jungle, the team charging through emerged through the dense trees and appeared in front of the caravan.
A Giant Blue Wolf, nearly ten meters long, leapt out and landed in the middle of the road, making the ground dip slightly under its claws. Then, the Giant Wolf glanced back at the caravan, a trace of a very human-like disdain in its deep wolven eyes.
“Rustle!” One after another, Giant Blue wolves sprang out, landing in the middle of the road. In the blink of an eye, there were dozens of Giant Wolves ranging from six to eight meters long appearing in front of this caravan.
Behind them, countless trees were broken, countless bushes were trampled, it was a mess. They had forcefully made a path through the jungle.
“Howl!” The largest of the Giant Wolves growled low, its limbs slightly bent, ready to bound into the jungle on the other side. However, a fair hand on its back grabbed its mane lightly and tugged.
“Howl!” the majestic Giant Wolf with a circle of beautiful golden fur around its neck whimpered. Its tail, which had turned golden, wagged like a dog’s.
Then, guided by the hand that grabbed its mane, the Giant Wolf walked towards the caravan which had already formed a defensive formation.
“Thump!” “Thump!” “Thump!”…Due to the Giant Wolf’s large body, each step it made, its claws sank into the earth, leaving behind a deep paw print and making a significant sound, imposing a tremendous pressure on the entire caravan.
As the Giant Wolf approached, all the lizards pulling the carts dropped to the ground, shivering while the horned horses that the adventurers rode made uneasy neighs.
Sandro, the leader, unsheathed the heavy sword he carried, his face pale as he watched the Giant Wolf slowly approaching. A monster of this level is beyond the limit of what their adventurer corps could resist.
But he hadn’t ordered a retreat, and not one person from the caravan ran, even though many were frightened to the point of trembling by the suddenly appearing Wolf pack.
This was not because these people were particularly brave, but because, along with the movement of the leading wolf, the rest of the Giant Wolves also slowly closed in, forming an encircling pattern, implying whoever ran first would die.
“Gulp!” Within the caravan, from time to time, someone swallowed hard. As the wind passed through the forest, a faint stench spread throughout the caravan. It seemed that someone had been scared to the point of wetting themselves.
“Balun, is this the ‘nothing big’ you were talking about?” The fat merchant looked at the Giant Wolves slowly closing in, a look of despair on his face, “If this doesn’t count as ‘big’, then there’s nothing that isn’t ‘big’, how did you scout? You’re going to get us all killed!”
“I’ve checked all around the caravan!” the skinny thief Balun replied with a shaky voice, “Don’t blame me, they came from somewhere else.”
“Such a large Wolf pack came, and you didn’t notice anything in advance, if not blaming you, who should we blame?”
“I…” just as the thief was about to argue.
The Giant Wolf had already strode up to them, with a contemptuous glance, he swept over them and slowly lowered his head.
“Which one of you can tell me, where is this?” At that moment, on the back of the Giant Wolf, a very youthful voice sounded.
