Chapter 999: Chapter 999: Checkmate on the Train

"No, not really," Xu Huo said. "It just came to mind."

Dong Jingxuan didn’t really care, but he was very interested in his Prop.

"Your Prop seems to be alive," he said. "This is the first time I’ve seen a real living Prop."

The so-called living Props are not like Girl in the Painting and Mr. Dong, who have complete human forms or can imitate human life. Instead, they are a type of embedding, or rather, a composite of living organs in a Prop. There are very few of these kinds of Props, most origins are unclear, and they often have some inexplicable uses. Compared to graded Props, they do not have too many special advantages; they are more of a curiosity.

Take the "Eye of the Deceased" for example, embedding a strange eyeball onto the hilt of a sword can be disgusting, but it also demonstrates the ability of the Artifact Maker who created this kind of Prop - at least it can keep that thing alive.

As for whether other Props have special effects like the "Eye of the Deceased," that’s not certain.

Having learned Xu Huo’s name, Dong Jingxuan asked with interest: "Xu Zhi, can you sell me that sword?"

"What do you think?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow.

"The price is negotiable," said Dong Jingxuan. "Whatever you paid for it, I’ll offer double."

Xu Huo slowly smiled. "Up to now, you have not given me a dime you promised."

Dong Jingxuan didn’t feel embarrassed at all, propped his chin up, and gestured Brother Lei to pay up.

Brother Lei hesitated for less than a second before summoning a small box of White Notes out of thin air, placing it on the table, and sliding it open towards Xu Huo.

But before Xu Huo could speak, Dong Jingxuan said displeased, "What do you take me for? You think my life is only worth a million? Bring out another million."

Brother Lei’s expression darkened slightly. "Young Master Xuan, Mr. Dong specified your allowance before you came out this time."

"Does this count as an allowance?" Dong Jingxuan said with a cold face, slamming the cutlery onto the table.

The faces of the few following Brother Lei also showed displeasure; however, Dong Jingxuan only eyed Brother Lei, who had no choice but to compromise and fetched another box.

Xu Huo happily accepted the money and smiled, "Relax, this money will definitely be worth your while."

"The following is a boarding announcement. The 133 train to Snow City will be departing shortly and the journey will take a total of three hours. Two-thirds of the route will pass through underground tunnels, during which passengers will be able to enjoy the unique tunnel scenery distinct to District 002. We wish everyone a Pleasant Journey."

Three hours was not long, as District 002 was much larger than Zone 014.

The conductor came over and kindly asked if they wanted a guide to the tunnel scenery. Xu Huo took one, and the little boy next to him got one as well.

The so-called tunnel scenery is simply the commercialization of previously developed underground mining areas, not the leftover uneven mine pits, but rather peculiar views formed from uniquely conditioned geological formations, such as stones that shimmer like fireflies or layers of rocks arranged by the colors of the rainbow, and some interesting fossils, including some animal Evolution processes.

Of course, the train travels fast, and it’s just a matter of holographic projection along the way.

The people of District 002 were used to this and only small children took an interest, running around the carriage.

"Close the door." Dong Jingxuan, annoyed by the children’s noise, directed Brother Lei to close the carriage door—this was a trivial matter, but his casual commanding attitude completely enraged Brother Lei’s subordinates. A square-faced young man said, "Young Master Xuan, Brother Lei is not here to run errands; you can call the conductor just the same!"

Dong Jingxuan lifted his eyelids and looked at them. "If not for my father, could he have his position today? He’s reaping the benefits of the Dong Family, and still wants to negotiate for doing some tasks? If you’re so prideful, why not go elsewhere? Why stick with the Dong Family?"

Brother Lei stopped the square-faced man and said calmly, "Young Master Xuan, you spoke gravely. Mr. Dong has been very kind to me; I won’t leave the Dong Family."

"That’s more like it, go close the door." Dong Jingxuan, completely oblivious to the anger he incited, saw the square-faced man still pulling and dragging and said, "If you don’t want to stay here, leave. Don’t disturb my sleep."

Half of Brother Lei’s followers immediately stood up, while Dong Jingxuan, as if deliberately provoking them, ordered Brother Lei to go out and guard the door—this carriage was VIP number one, right behind the control room and the storage room, separated from carriage number two by a small corridor with a door at each end. Obviously, the corridor could not accommodate ten people.

Brother Lei and four others stayed at the door while the rest went to carriage number two.

The train did not make much noise in motion, but the playfulness and crying of the children behind the door continued unabated, never too loud, yet disruptive enough to interfere with one’s eardrums, not noisy, but not quiet enough.

"Can’t you keep your damn kid quiet for a bit?" A furious shout came from afar: "If he keeps running around, do you believe I’ll kill him?!"

This was like poking a hornet’s nest; the child’s parent immediately started arguing with him, and the overlapping sounds of adults’ swearing, roaring, and children’s crying were shrill and piercing.

The conductor came to mediate, but no one knew what happened next as passengers began to fight around the conductor; in a while, the passengers were not much harmed, but the conductor was beaten with bruises and a swollen face. In a rage, the conductor called the on-duty Players, but the number of quarreling and shoving passengers was somewhat large, only a few people could be separated by Props, and the children, oblivious to everything, were grabbing legs, laying on the ground, rolling, and crying.

The duty Players tried to pull the children apart, but this angered the protective parents even more, several women rushed over and scratched away. The Players could not strike back, and if they pushed too hard, nobody knew what happened next, but one of them hit their head on a metal seat and died.

"What are you doing!" The husband, whose wife had died, roared and charged to assault the Player, "You bastards, thinking you can do whatever you want with some Props!"

The crowd was agitated, and the passengers dragged three duty Players into the fray. Amidst the pain cries and people falling, no one cared anymore; they were all brawling, even the two Players who were called from the other carriages were buried in the mess.

"Something’s off!" Brother Lei suddenly said, then told his counterparts in carriage number two, "Close the door, don’t let them over here, and don’t get dragged into it."

The square-faced man immediately went to close the door of carriage number two but didn’t expect that the door had been damaged. While he was pulling it, a woman with a bloody face staggered over asking for help: "Someone’s dead... my child was trampled to death..."

Although square-faced was cautious and on guard, on hearing this he instinctively glanced towards the crowd for a moment. In that split second when his gaze was averted, a flash of cold light slashed at his neck!
