Chapter 992: Sunshine Tax
Chapter 992: Chapter 992: Sunshine Tax
Another white-haired Player blocked his companion and shouted, "Stop wasting time talking to her, stop the car!"
Two of the pursuing Players immediately overtook the car, knowing there were still Players inside, they didn’t directly board the vehicle. Instead, a white-spotted Player threw out a roadblock Prop, cutting off the road ahead:
"Stop the car!"
"Mr. Xu..." The young girl sitting beside him was a bit nervous, but Xu Huo had no intention of stopping. Instead, he poked his head out to Chi Minghong behind him: "I’m going to speed up, hold tight."
Chi Minghong signaled an "ok" from a distance and then got tangled up with the Players again, while Xu Huo gripped the electric switch and cranked it up to the maximum.
Despite its bulky appearance, the electric storage car wasn’t slow to accelerate. It reached top speed in just three seconds, roaring towards the obstacle ahead!
Under the effect of "Compulsory Levitation," the roadblock and the two Players were levitated moments before the car’s arrival. The difference was that the roadblock smashed onto the front windshield, while the two Players managed to jump onto the car, shaking off the influence of the Prop.
A Long Triforce Thorn stabbed down from above. Xu Huo dodged with a tilt of his head and, seizing the opportunity, he used "Core of Luminescence," kicking away the white-spotted Player clinging to the car door, before asking the young girl beside him, "Can you drive?"
"I can’t... I can!" The young girl changed her reply halfway, her eyes firmly stating, "I can hold the steering wheel and go straight!"
"Going straight is good enough." Xu Huo gave up his seat, "Just hold the steering wheel tight and keep driving forward. It’s a straight road ahead. If there’s any problem, I’ll take care of it."
The young girl nodded seriously.
Freeing up space, Xu Huo climbed to the roof of the car, first slapping the approaching Player off the vehicle, then crossing his hands to capture the white-spotted Player’s neck with a "Constriction Collar."
Not killing his opponent directly, he then used "Identity Swap" on the Player who had been knocked off and was trying to climb back in, securing the car door as well.
Back on the roof, he looked at the two trying to remove the "Constriction Collar" and sincerely suggested, "How about you both get off now and stop following?"
The white-spotted Player’s voice was hoarse from the tight collar, "You killed people in Huayu City, the government has to intervene..."
"That’s the principle, but you still have a choice." Xu Huo offered two options, "First, because you lack the ability, you fail to catch the Players from the other district and return without success. Second, because you lack the ability, you are killed by the Players from the other district in the line of duty."
Not only the two Players close to him heard his words, but also those entangled with Chi Minghong behind him heard them loud and clear.
The bulky electric storage car whistled through the dark, its headlights cutting through the darkness to illuminate the road ahead. But as the car sped past, the illuminated area was quickly swallowed back into shadow—like a lone lamp surrounded by the boundless night.
There were only two targets, so the first wave of government Players that caught up wasn’t many, but the situation didn’t match their expectations.
They did catch up to them, but instead of taking people back for credit, they might possibly leave their lives here!
It was evident that Xu Huo wasn’t just making an empty threat. Realizing that he might be more difficult to deal with than the female Player they had been struggling with, the lead white-haired Player made a solemn hand signal.
"Retrieve your Prop." The white-spotted Player said.
Xu Huo didn’t question the authenticity nor did he negotiate terms. He simply withdrew the "Constriction Collar."
The two white-spotted Players retreated with reluctance, but Xu Huo’s straightforward release indicated he was confident in his position.
Xu Huo stood on the car’s roof watching the Players get off, waiting until they vanished into the darkness before returning to the driver’s seat.
Chi Minghong gave him a thumbs-up, "Dominant. I’ll give it a try next time."
Xu Huo didn’t say much, pulling up the navigation on the car to confirm the route.
"The roads in District 002 are quite decent." Chi Minghong was obviously familiar with the traffic routes, "There is a main road between each city. From Huayu City to Xiaoyang City, there’s no detour; you could drive it blindfolded."
"Are there no random instances on the road?" Xu Huo asked.
"There shouldn’t be any where they can repair roads, but random instances aren’t necessarily fixed; you never know when one will show up again." Chi Minghong was quite optimistic, "Bad luck if you run into one, just do it. It won’t delay us too much."
All said and done, her driving was crude, not caring at all whether there were random instances on the road.
There was only this single path, unless they chose not to follow it, they could only press on ahead.
After traveling through the dark for a while, Chi Minghong grew increasingly impatient, "Let’s chat, this pitch black is too dull."
"You speak." Xu Huo was checking information on Beneath the Dimension, sparing a moment to respond.
Seeing he wasn’t too interested, Chi Minghong turned to chat with the young girl beside her, asking casually how old she was, and if she had any family.
"I only have an elder sister." The girl, Lu Qing, briefly explained her background, an abandoned orphan, not knowing whether her parents were dead or alive. She was raised in a government welfare institution and started fending for herself at ten. Another orphan from the same institution, Liao Lian, had always taken care of her.
Chi Minghong furrowed her eyebrows at the story, "Doesn’t the government care?"
"The welfare institution only takes care of children under ten." Lu Qing’s expression was calm, not feeling pitiful for herself, instead, she said: "Many people live like this."
"I want to save money for sunbathing." She continued, "But the sunlight tax is expensive. Only people in big cities get to sunbathe every day, costing at least 30,000 white notes a month."
"Sunlight tax?" Chi Minghong was hearing this term for the first time, "You have to pay taxes for sunlight?"
"We don’t have the sun here, but they say the sun can be brought over. If you pay the tax, you can bask in the real sun."
Lu Qing’s voice harbored yearning, "I wonder what sunlight feels like to the touch."
Chi Minghong pursed her lips and, after a moment, said, "It’s similar to light, just a bit warm."
"I know people from the outer districts can sunbathe every day and for several hours at that." Longing filled Lu Qing’s fair face, "That’d be nice. If only I was from somewhere else."
Chi Minghong was lost for words, pounding the steering wheel and mumbling, "I wish I hadn’t brought it up..."
Sunlight, for most people, was only mentioned in complaints about the weather. Who could imagine that one day, something as natural as living would be taxed?
"There is no sun in District 002, the sun that the taxpayers bask in isn’t real sun." Xu Huo took over the conversation, "It’s likely a mineral substance or device that emits energy similar to the sun. You don’t have to spend 30,000 white notes for it."
