Chapter 972: Chapter 972: Good and Evil
Xu Huo was unmoved. "Doctor Zhang is not Dr. Wu, he’s just a less gifted pharmacist, and the Evolution Potion is so flawed that it would be better to buy one ready-made from another district."
"But he’s also looking for Dr. Wu. I saw clues about Dr. Wu in his secret room. The address I gave you earlier was fake. Just return the Potion to me, and I’ll tell you everything in detail!"
"I thought he really admired Doctor Zhang," Shangguan Xi rolled her eyes. "All for his own life, betraying others without a second thought."
Kuang Wenjun frowned at him. "Could you keep quiet for a moment?"
"What? Do you sympathize with him?" Shangguan Xi asked back.
"It’s not that I sympathize with him," Zhu Feiyun chimed in from the side, "his original intention was indeed for the base station, but fate played him."
"Give me a break," Shangguan Xi said. "He knew there was an Antitoxin among the Potions. Why didn’t he give it to the Base City government? So many people died at that time, surely a few government officials with a conscience would want to save people, unless he was afraid that others would take his Healing Potion."
"I guess when he took it back, there were no side effects yet. Otherwise, why would he agree to give it to his companions? He just didn’t expect retribution to come so quickly and to be crippled at W18."
"I’m not saying that one must sacrifice oneself for others to be considered great. It’s normal to preserve oneself rather than others, but to say that he did it for all of humanity is a bit far-fetched. I bet his initial intent was purely to make a name for himself."
No matter what Luo Changren’s original intentions were, attempting to improve the genetics at W37 Base Station was a benign starting point. The outbreak of the SE virus was truly an accident, and his choice to hide the Antitoxin for self-preservation was understandable—he was just a selfish but normal person.
The pity lay with those who died at W37 Base.
"What color is the Healing Potion?" Xu Huo took the case, pulling out two Potions—one green, one blue—from an empty space.
"Are you really giving it to me?" Luo Changren’s eyes reddened, he couldn’t even blink, staring fixedly at the two Potions. "Green... not blue..."
Xu Huo’s expression was slightly cold, "Whatever Potion you choose, I’ll give you. Playing tricks will only harm yourself."
"Green!" Luo Changren immediately said.
Xu Huo gave him the green Potion as promised.
Upon receiving it, Luo Changren immediately tried to inject it into his arm, but suddenly, his vision blurred, and the diminishing liquid unexpectedly turned from green to blue!
"Ah!" He screamed, throwing the Potion away, and with anger and resentment, lunged at Xu Huo, "You lied to me! How dare you!"
However, he was incapacitated and caught in Xu Huo’s Spiritual World, unable to move from where he stood.
Nearby, Shangguan Xi and the others had a slightly different view of what happened. In reality, Xu Huo had not even handed off the Potion. Luo Changren had pressed against his own arm with nothing in hand and then started to lose his mind.
"If it’s not a real Potion, there’s no need for such a big reaction," Shangguan Xi looked at Xu Huo. "What exactly is in the blue Potion?"
Xu Huo walked up to the immobile Luo Changren, lifting the blue Potion and asked, "Is this the original sample of the SE virus?"
Luo Changren’s anger couldn’t hide his astonishment, "You guessed it!"
"What happened before wasn’t your fault," Xu Huo patted his face, "but lying to me that this was the Antitoxin was your mistake."
Luo Changren, knowing that he would not escape death today, adopted a recklessly defiant attitude. "When I guessed Gao Zhen was going to cull the population, I knew she wouldn’t let the virus spread to other Base Cities or allow the commoners of W37 to die entirely. She wanted the Potion, right? I simply gave her a big gift!"
"Without my brother Xu, you would still be in the government hall, wouldn’t W37 verify the Potion?" Shangguan Xi scoffed.
"She knew, but you didn’t," Luo Changren let out continuous eerie laughter. "You wanted to be the good guys, right? Then taste the consequences of good intentions gone wrong. Once one-third of the people at the base station die because of you, you’ll understand what it feels like to live every second with the guilt."
"Are you even human!" Zhu Feiyun and the others were angry, not only almost being framed but also associated with so many deaths.
However, Luo Changren seemed a bit delirious, slowly lifting his head, his eyes focusing on an unknown spot, blankly saying, "They all say I should be blamed for this, but what did I do wrong? The Potion I brought back was meant for Players, those who don’t need it don’t have to use it..."
"Being ignorant doesn’t mean everyone in the world is as ignorant as you." Xu Huo obtained a bit of the blue Potion, after analyzing it with a Prop, confirmed it was the SE virus, the same as the sample he collected in the quarantine zone.
He injected Luo Changren with the green Potion.
Not just Luo Changren, even Shangguan Xi and the others couldn’t believe it. Kuang Wenjun said, "He wanted to use your hand to kill everyone in Base City, why did you spare him?"
"Use your brains, what he said was hardly feasible." Xu Huo signaled them to stay calm. "If you knew the truth and wanted to save the people of Base City, would you not check the authenticity of the Potion?"
"It’s hard to say if it’s useful, but it’s easy to see if it’s poisonous."
That was the logic, but Luo Changren’s demeanor suggested otherwise.
"Putting the original sample and the Healing Potion together proves both items hold equal importance." Xu Huo looked at Luo Changren. "I believe you stored the sample to save people, but you didn’t foresee such a high mortality rate among the infected."
"Of course, distrusting Gao Zhen is another issue. Anyone else would protect themselves first."
"At least until today, you hadn’t done evil subjectively."
If Luo Changren had obtained the Antitoxin but chose not to hand it over to Gao Zhen due to selfish motives, he could be blamed, but the reality was he never brought back an Antitoxin. Whether he handed it over to Gao Zhen or not, it was the same.
"But just now, it showed your thought process isn’t very clever," Xu Huo’s eyes seemed to penetrate the soul, "did you really want to drag the entire base station down?"
Luo Changren closed his eyes, "Bird Tower’s transmission tower is triple-encrypted, now only the high-ranking officials of the base know the password."
Xu Huo nodded slightly, his companions behind him unsure what expression to wear. After a while, Shangguan Xi rubbed his head, "This is just like watching a movie with twists at every turn, it’s almost twisting through eighteen bends on a mountain road."
"The duality of good and evil in humans exists in just a thought," Xu Huo said softly.
"There’s a commotion outside!" Zhu Feiyun suddenly said, turning his head outwards then added, "Isn’t there a Spatial Barrier? How did they get in!"
"I collected the Prop a while ago." Xu Huo pressed Pan Qiao’s Communicator. "Throw out the body bags."
