Chapter 964 The Female Mayor

Chapter 964: Chapter 964 The Female Mayor

Duck Tongue Cap glared angrily at Xu Huo, though his fury was not directed at Xu Huo or the mayor, but he silently agreed with the man’s words and shot Xu Huo a fierce glance before sweeping away in a huff.

The remarks had given the Law Enforcement Team members a new "understanding" of Xu Huo’s identity and their looks turned malevolent when they gazed upon him.

"They are all decent people," commented Mr. Xu, apparently oblivious to the pressure emanating from their stares, as he found a place to sit down.

Shangguan Xi and her two companions, as Xu Huo’s associates, were also reluctantly let go. They had been worried about their situation, but seeing Xu Huo so calm, they gradually relaxed, especially Shangguan Xi, who even asked others for water and food.

Following the gesture of the Player guarding Xu Huo, the Law Enforcement Team brought over water and food. Shangguan Xi thanked them unceremoniously and invited the others to eat with her.

Pan Qiao and Kuang Wenjun were both tired and hungry, but they couldn’t let themselves go as easily and couldn’t help but send Xu Huo meaningful glances, hoping he would give them a hint about what to do next.

Since they had a living sample in his hands and could leave once they’d passed the checkpoint, there was no need to take such a big risk for a side mission. Surely, surviving was more important than a high instance score.

"Just wait a bit longer," Xu Huo gestured for them to keep their cool, then turned to a nearby Player, "Could you let another friend of mine go?"

The man gave him a sidelong glance, "Don’t push your luck."

"You may need my help soon with the mayor, and what helps others might just help yourself," Xu Huo said.

Only hesitating for two seconds, the Player raised his hand to signal the release, and then he stopped talking.

Zhu Feiyun came over, rubbing his arms, and spoke unhappily, "Don’t think I’ll be grateful just because you said a word..."

Before he could finish, Xu Huo turned and instructed someone behind him, "Then could you kindly press him back down..."

"I appreciate it!" Zhu Feiyun raised his voice to interrupt.

Mr. Xu nodded with a smile that was not quite a smile, "Have something to eat and replenish your energy."

Zhu Feiyun pinched his nose and sat down.

Shangguan Xi would never miss a chance to enjoy the scene; he deliberately snuggled up to Zhu Feiyun and teased, "How satisfying was that beating?"

Despite being in the same plight, they all deferred to Xu Huo, who clearly held a certain initiative. This made Shangguan Xi’s flattery beside him especially obnoxious.

But the situation was different now.

Zhu Feiyun turned stiffly and offered a "distorted" smile in return, "Very satisfying. Want to try?"

Shangguan Xi chuckled, "That’s not my cup of tea."

It wasn’t long before Xiong Qing awoke to his predicament and clutched Luo Changren’s hand, "Mr. Ai..."

Luo Changren signaled with his eyes to stop talking just in time for a man dressed like a secretary to emerge from the elevator, nodding to the guarding Player before saying, "The mayor requests Mr. Xu and Mr. Ai to come upstairs."

Xu Huo stood up; the man player brought a wheelchair for Luo Changren. Along with the secretary, the four of them went up to the fourth floor together.

The entire fourth floor was the mayor’s office; the elevator doors opened right into it. When they entered, Gao Xiaoyan was just about to leave, the slightly "coarse" looking woman’s eyes were tinged red, and she left without giving them a glance.

The secretary followed her out.

Xu Huo and the remaining two stood in the office.

In front of them was an oversized desk, and behind the desk stood a woman with her back to them, facing the floor-to-ceiling windows. Beside her stood an IV stand adorned with multicolored potions, each bag connected by a tube with needles that were inserted into the back and crook of her withered hands, pumping the liquid into her body.

"Lou Jia, you can leave now," the woman, who was also the mayor of W37, Gao Zhen, supported herself on the stand and turned to face the three of them.

"How did you end up like this!" Luo Changren exclaimed in shock.

The woman before them bore no resemblance to the beautiful mayor of rumor, sought after by all. Her emaciation made it clear she had been ill for a long time; even rolling back a few years, her looks would not have been much to speak of.

Lou Jia had already retreated back into the elevator. Gao Zhen smiled at Luo Changren, "You seem to be doing alright."

Luo Changren’s expression was complex, but looking at the woman before him who strained even to breathe, he moved his lips but found himself at a loss for words.

"It’s been quite a few years, I didn’t expect you’d still be alive," said Gao Zhen. "I’ve gotten old, and my health is not good. I nearly forgot about the promise I made when I let you go—that time you really found the vaccine."

"Give me the vaccine, and W37 will spread it to every corner of the Base Station, ensuring that our descendants are no longer threatened by the virus."

Upon hearing this, a hint of derision crept over Luo Changren’s face, "Can I still trust you? You..."

"Wait a moment." Xu Huo cut him off, addressing the two of them, "I, personally, don’t care much for your trip down memory lane, mind if I play on my phone?"

The other two in the room did not respond, and though Gao Zhen didn’t even spare him a glance, Xu Huo took that as assent, pulled out his phone, sat to the side, and gestured for them to continue.

Holding back his anger was no relief for Luo Changren, "You dare say you didn’t know about the SE virus original samples W11 sent out as live specimens? Leaving the gate wide open for outsiders to bring samples in, what are you trying to do?"

"If you really wanted to kill, then why bother saving those who were infected?"

"Or has the mayor, who once stood so righteously convincing me to spend my life in atonement, now become another chasing after empty fame and glory?"

Gao Zhen sighed after hearing this, then looked down at the chaotic city below, "I want to save them too, but I’ve gradually come to understand over the past few years that one person’s power is limited, incapable of saving so many or bearing the burden of so many lives, especially when their lives overdraw on the future of the W37 Base Station."

"No one blames you for being unable to save everyone; it’s the same in all the other Base Cities!" retorted Luo Changren, not buying her justification, "But why do you save people only to kill them again, gathering all these infected people—just to end their lives?"

"You’ve joined hands with other Base Cities, haven’t you? You’re using the SE virus original samples to kill the infected, to kill the non-players!"

"If that’s what you think, you are not wrong," Gao Zhen slowly admitted under Luo Changren’s increasingly somber expression. "In my prime, I thought I could lead W37 into the light. It was only when I grew old I understood some things cannot be fought with time. I have aged, but W37’s burden has only grown heavier, and I cannot leave this burden to my successor."

"Then what do you want with the vaccine? Why not just destroy Bird Tower?" Luo Changren demanded, "Wouldn’t it be better if all regular humans died off, leaving the Base Station only to the players, so that there would never be a burden again!"

He was not in good health, the long journey coupled with his injuries made speaking so much exhausting; all he could do was rest in his wheelchair and glare at Gao Zhen.

He truly wanted to hear some unspeakable truth from Gao Zhen, but she, standing straight and unwavering, struck him with her final blow, "After reducing the burden on the Base Station, there would still need to be people to procreate and carry on the next generation."
