Chapter 949: The Overtime Incinerator Plant

Chapter 949: Chapter 949: The Overtime Incinerator Plant

The female mayor’s voice would echo through the city at intervals, but announcements concerning coexistence with W37 usually did not include images of the female mayor, nor were there visible communications from related government personnel. The secrecy was well maintained.

Of course, this was also thanks to the Canopy Pillar, where the buildings above the Canopy Pillar were the main places for the activities of the government’s upper echelons. Ordinary people and Players who hadn’t joined W37 were generally not allowed to go up there, nor were they permitted to.

Such strict isolation of communication and clear division of upper and lower ruling relations would logically lead to irreconcilable contradictions, but so far, the residents of W37 whom Xu Huo had encountered did not seem to mind.

It wasn’t that they had been tamed, but rather that Base W37 City had previously suffered numerous attack incidents. Players, ordinary people, and even the infected could suddenly become attackers. The continuous attacks had brought considerable losses to W37, the most severe of which destroyed a batch of newly tested food seeds.

Food was the lifeblood for ordinary people. In order to save a new batch of seeds, the market’s food supply was reduced by a third for a period of time, and nearly all residents went from having three meals a day to two. Hungry citizens decided to find a way to prevent such incidents, thus a proposal to build the main government departments and important laboratories up high came into being—this was the result of a vote by all residents.

There were still some Players who caused trouble in W37 afterwards, but the impact on the city’s basic operations was minimal, which fully proved the correctness of the decision.

The car passed the experimental fields to the east of the base.

There was a transparent wall between the experimental fields and the city, preventing direct interaction, but both sides could see each other. Opposite the experimental fields was also a dense cluster of residences, likely the homes of infected individuals working in the fields.

Marks could be seen on these people’s bodies.

Both sides were in a stable condition. As the car passed by, the people working in the fields would look up to greet it, showing no signs of negative emotions despite being crammed into a tight space.

Of course, other residents in the city weren’t just living on welfare; everyone had to work, with everyone employed in the lower levels of the city.

Xu Huo glanced at the low houses still under construction, then turned back to look at the crowded streets nearby and briefly closed his eyes.

He didn’t get off at the stop closest to the incineration plant, but chose a nearby bar district instead—this was recommended by an old lady on the express as the favorite gathering place for outsiders, with reasonable costs and many job opportunities. If he planned to stay long in W37, he could try here. Sometimes the government also recruited here, but generally only sought Players.

"Handsome, want a drink?" As soon as he got off, a charming woman approached a few steps closer, "My home’s alcohol is diluted with only ten parts water."

A casual glance would reveal that many bars on the street had signs at the entrance detailing their special drinks and the ratio of water dilution, which was also a selling point.

"Can you make money by diluting so little?" Xu Huo followed the woman.

"You must be new here, right?" the woman kindly explained, "Here, water is also a precious commodity. We charge for the water we dilute with. Alcohol is definitely more expensive than water. I can tell you’re not short of money. Drinks diluted with too much water tasteless. Try our strong alcohol; it’s really fragrant!"

The woman’s small bar had quite a few customers. Even though it wasn’t dark yet, there were already people with flushed faces. In the ten-meter stretch to the bar, several drunks were making inappropriate advances on the woman:

"Boss, your butt looks perkier today. Come have a drink; it’s on me!"

The woman adeptly managed her way among the patrons, inviting Xu Huo to the bar where the bartender served him a drink.

Xu Huo checked the menu for food instead of ordering alcohol.

The owner wasn’t disappointed and instructed the bartender to take good care of him. That was when another patron, leaning on the bar, laughed, "Why eat food here? You should be drinking!"

The bartender brought over the cooked food. Xu Huo had already started eating, and the other customer, finding it boring, turned away.

Having someone focused on eating in a bar was a bit unusual, but the incoming and outgoing crowd only gave him a quick glance, involuntarily ignoring his presence.

After a while, three middle-aged men entered the bar and called for the owner to serve non-diluted alcohol.

"Old Ding, it seems your incineration plant has been doing well lately. You can afford to drink undiluted now," someone recognized them.

The man with the mutton-chop beards boasted with a hint of pride, "Exactly, we’ve been working overtime. Tonight, another batch of goods is due to arrive for burning. It looks like we’ll be busy for quite a few days!"

"Overtime pay at the incineration plant is really high, and if you do continuous overtime, they even compensate with potions. Not to speak of the salary, but the potions are good stuff, usually consumed by Players!" The greeter leaned in enviously, lighting a cigarette for Mutton Chop Beards Old Ding, "You guys have been doing a lot of overtime recently, do you need to hire more people?"

Old Ding took a puff of his cigarette, his eyes vacant as he looked at him, "It’s just recently. When things were slow, how come I didn’t see you joining in the fun?"

The man was unbothered, "I just happened to be free."

"What’s there to do at the incineration plant? It’s not like the laboratory sends stuff over every day. We need our exploration team to catch an Alien for that to happen. If it’s not much, others are too lazy to come over." Another person added, "Besides, burning Alien corpses and mutant plants every day, you might end up getting sick and dying."

Old Ding slammed his drink down, "The ash produced is fertilizer; even the grains are grown with the ash from our incineration plant. Without the incineration plant, what would you eat!"

The unemployed man quickly smoothed things over, "He’s just jealous, don’t mind him. Tell us, why has the laboratory been sending so much stuff lately, is the government planning something big?"

Old Ding took a couple of gulps of alcohol, "What big move? The laboratory is just clearing out inventory lately. Useless stuff is thrown out to be burned. It doesn’t take up space and can be used as fertilizer. It also lets us make some extra money."

The operations CURLOPTCOOKIELIST of the incineration plant weren’t a secret, and many people knew, so they speculated as a group whether the Players had gone out and brought back findings, causing the laboratory to run out of space, forcing them to make room.

Xu Huo finished his meal in the corner, drank a glass of water, then paid and left. The owner, who was soliciting customers outside, handed him a business card, "Come support us when you can. We prepare cooked food during the day, and after eight in the evening, we also have freshly made specialty dishes, tasty and not expensive."

Xu Huo nodded, moved the business card to the left just in time to avoid a grabbing hand from behind.

Seeing him dodge, the other person paused, "Player?"

Xu Huo looked at the comer, a somewhat elderly, skinny man, his eyeballs flickering between him and the bar owner, mistrustful yet fixating on the owner, "Your new lover?"
