Chapter 942: The Burden of Strong Forces

Chapter 942: Chapter 942: The Burden of Strong Forces

"Surveillance indicates that for a duration of two seconds just now, the psychic power fluctuations over there reached over one hundred thousand," the ponytailed man answered from a position a hundred meters away. "It’s probably because we exceeded the range of the mental interference, so nothing appeared to change."

All ten players tasked with monitoring were connected to each other and received unified instructions from the control center located in the base building, operated by Gao Xiaoyan.

To avoid unnecessary trouble, they had agreed to Xu Huo’s choice of a location in a forest far from the base, since nobody wanted to expose their power data, and Xu Huo was absolutely unattainable for them. It would be the best outcome if they could enable Ren Man to start his Super Evolution.

This is why Gao Xiaoyan had only arranged for ten people to maintain distance and follow; they were there both to observe and to protect.

"Based on Mr. Xu’s test data, it’s unlikely he’ll spot our guys within a three hundred-meter radius, and usual props and characteristics don’t extend that far. As long as our people stay out of his line of sight..." The staff member hesitated for a moment then added, "But if it’s one hundred thousand, that’s not certain. With such a value, his mental interference range should be around four hundred meters. Our people might have already been exposed."

"Didn’t you say that when multiple players use their Psychic Power at the same time, the values might temporarily stack?" Gao Xiaoyan said.

"This phenomenon does exist, but Ren Man’s value is just too low," the staff member spoke candidly, implying that compared to Xu Huo, Ren Man’s few thousand barely counted as a fraction.

"Do you see any changes in Xu Gou?" Gao Xiaoyan inquired. "If you’ve entered his mental interference range, you should be able to see his actions. Even if you can’t see him, there should be some changes in the visual field."

"Nothing at all," the Lightning-patterned man said. "The two of them standing there looking like idiots... It’s too stupid, the way they’re handling psychic evolution. If someone made a sneak attack, would they even be able to react?"

"Unless you have a thermal weapon and you’re hundreds of meters away," the ponytailed man interjected. "However, thermal weapons entering their mental interference range would be detected by them sooner than by average players."

"Just because Xu Gou isn’t moving doesn’t mean he can’t move. He might be even more formidable than he lets on. If he can open the Spiritual World, you could see him from the outside, but once you enter, you might not even be able to find him."

The ponytailed man paused for a moment before continuing, "However, I’ve heard that some powerful players can make it so you don’t even realize you’re under mental interference. Whatever you see, you’d believe it’s real, and they can selectively cause disturbances within the range of their psychic coverage. To that extent, it becomes impossible to discern what’s real and what’s a facade."

"There was once a player who created an entire city with his psychic power, one that could even sustain life."

"It’s like radar, basically, the kind that emits electromagnetic waves," the Lightning-patterned man said. "But this kind of ability must be a huge drain on a player’s psyche, right? It can’t be maintained for very long."

"Xu Gou is just a Rank-C Player who can barely project his spiritual power externally. Apart from instruments being able to detect it, it’s uncertain whether he could actually interfere with others."

"His data won’t be wrong," Gao Xiaoyan insisted. "A stable fifty thousand, and even if he can’t open the Spiritual World, with the help of props, he could achieve a similar effect. Xiao Mantou is also on the edge of evolution and more sensitive than the average player. It’s bound to succeed."

"It would be great if we could keep him here," the staff member shamelessly inquired. "Do you think he’s into men or women?"

Gao Xiaoyan glanced at him, while the Lightning-patterned man mocked him through the communicator, "A player with such talent would be highly sought after in other sectors. You could throw everything W37 has at him, and he still might not spare you a second glance."

"Looks don’t work, but we have weapons and props," the staff member said excitedly. "To this date, there’s no consensus on the causes behind Super Evolution, but in successful cases, over half were due to external disturbances leading to evolution. If we can keep him, we’ll make a fortune!"

"Listen to this old man talk, as if one wasn’t tough enough to handle, he still dreams of mass production," the Lightning-patterned man teased, then suddenly paused. "Xu Gou is moving."

Xu Huo could see but not hear them, and he wasn’t very interested in their conversation. He circled around and then headed to the border of the Spiritual World. There, Vertical Pupil couldn’t go any further and also couldn’t see too far.

But the sensation of having grown a pair of eyes several hundred meters away was quite novel. He wanted to take a look indoors, so he finished his guidance of Ren Man.

Apart from Ren Man evolving a few fragments of the Spiritual World and barely opening a convenient door, there was no further progress. He called out to Xu Huo several times midway, but getting no response, he gave up. Perhaps to cherish this rare opportunity, he made numerous attempts, like trying to enlarge the hole in the ground or making the surveillance equipment complete, but he wasn’t successful.

Then he saw Xu Huo appear in front of him, his face pale and a bit drained. "Have you been beside me the whole time?"

"The use of Super Evolution Power can place a great burden on the body, especially the psyche," Xu Huo said. "It’s best to have an appropriate plan based on the body’s capacity to endure. You’ve just crossed the threshold of Super Evolution; your psychic power can only be emitted with the aid of props or within specific environments. However, until you’re proficient, it’s best not to use it haphazardly. Other players may not have strengthened psychic powers, but targeted attacks are not difficult."

"I understand," Ren Man nodded earnestly. "Thank you. I thought I might miss out on this chance for life..."

"You’re not going to do anything to Xiao Yan, are you?"

Xu Huo just smiled, "Maybe I won’t have to force anything; Gao Xiaoyan may take the initiative herself."

"She won’t," Ren Man said with certainty. "Because the mayor of Base W37 City is a woman. She would never set a precedent of using her body to trade for favors!"

"If that were to happen, W37 wouldn’t be what it is today!"

"Quite principled," Xu Huo remarked noncommittally.

"I know it sounds laughable, a bunch of people who might not even have enough to eat still caring about such things," Ren Man looked at him with determined eyes. "But if it means sacrificing Xiao Yan, I’d rather lose my own life!"

With interest, Xu Huo countered: "You’ve gained an advantage; what if W37 were to break the agreement unilaterally?"

"Never!" Ren Man declared confidently. "Because this is Base W37 City! As long as you also abide by the agreement."

A smile touched Xu Huo’s face, but it lacked sincerity. "You talk a good game. Base W37 City is in a decent state for now... Have you ever been to other Base Cities?"

Ren Man’s smile faded slightly. "I’ve seen abandoned Base Cities. Our place will never become like that, and one day, it’ll return to the prosperity we had before the Alien tide."

Xu Huo couldn’t empathize with his "grand ambitions" and looked toward the training base, slowly saying, "Young and thinking big."
