Chapter 937 Training Base and Connections
Chapter 937: Chapter 937 Training Base and Connections
Emotions can create conflicts, and a loosely cooperative group is likely to disintegrate because of emotions. Gao Xiaoyan’s intentions were clear, and Xu Huo didn’t mind. He casually chatted with her.
After dealing superficially with her somewhat veiled inquiries about his identity and background, he excused himself to rest and ended the conversation.
Gao Xiaoyan also tactfully took her people and left.
"What does she mean by this, trying to divide us?" Shangguan Xi finally couldn’t help speaking after the others had left.
"It’s not exactly division, she just doesn’t think highly of us," Zhu Feiyun shrugged.
Besides, they couldn’t really be considered a close-knit team in the first place, so there was no need for outsiders to divide them.
"I’m afraid they won’t let us pass through easily," Kuang Wenjun frowned. "There’s still a way to Base W37, who knows what might happen on the road."
Indeed, Kuang Wenjun’s concerns were valid. After they resumed their journey post-rain, it was as if they had stirred an alien nest. Every so often, they encountered aliens, not only suffering heavy losses, but almost everyone sustained injuries, while Gao Xiaoyan and her people simply stood by, watching without intervening.
This was indisputable, but such an attitude was unsettling.
They finally neared Base W37. As Gao Xiaoyan said, the bridge was still submerged underwater, making it impassable with the vehicle. Since the water was not receding anytime soon, Gao Xiaoyan led them to a slightly further bridge.
This bridge appeared to be exclusively used by players from Base W37. The bridge sections only began lowering onto the piers as they approached.
Their vehicle drove smoothly onto it. There was no one stationed on the bridge, but it was fitted with space-time item suppression devices, a common sight in well-equipped game districts.
"I didn’t expect such tight security from Base W37 towards outsiders," Shangguan Xi commented, "It makes sense that they can withstand hostility from other base cities."
"Look ahead," Pan Qiao pointed out.
They looked up to see that the gates of Base W37 City were open. At the top and bottom of the gate stood ten players, and two distinctive black vehicles, different from regular SUVs, drove out and then spontaneously moved aside.
After Gao Xiaoyan’s vehicle passed, the black vehicle’s tinted windows became transparent, and one of the drivers waved and called out in a coarse voice, "Xiao Yan’s back? Not driving today?"
Gao Xiaoyan leaned over from the front passenger seat to greet him, then asked, "Uncle Zhong, where’s Xiao Mantou?"
"He’s out training. Did you need him for something?" Uncle Zhong carefully looked at the vehicle behind, "Are these new friends you’ve made?"
"I found a teacher for Xiao Mantou," Gao Xiaoyan said cheerily, pointing at Xu Huo, "You go on, Uncle Zhong, I’m off."
The two vehicles successively passed through the city gate, with players from the distant and nearby vehicles momentarily giving them a few seconds of attention before resuming their activities.
However, it was only after entering the gate that Xu Huo realized there were more players here than he had anticipated, and this place appeared more like a training base than a large base city due to its solemn atmosphere and the demeanor of the walking personnel.
"Why isn’t there a clearance hint after reaching Base W37 City?" Zhu Feiyun glanced unconsciously back at the cage, "The sample is fine."
"There’s no trigger for a side mission either," Kuang Wenjun added, "Logically, having come this far, if there were a side mission, it should have been indicated by now. Even if this isn’t exactly Base W37 City, it’s not far. Going any further would surely mean clearance."
"We have to trigger the side mission before clearing."
"The instance only required us to deliver the sample to Base W37 City. Could there be a specific location?"
"If the side mission relates to Gao Xiaoyan, we should have triggered when we met her," Zhu Feiyun speculated, "Could it be about her brother instead?"
The few inside the vehicle shared a silent moment, realizing that even if there were side missions here, there might not be much substantial information to uncover.
"Sometimes in games, you come across tasks like accomplishing a specific act. These side missions are usually easy with low rewards," Shangguan Xi suddenly lost interest, then added, "Brother Xu, if meeting Gao Xiaoyan’s brother doesn’t trigger a side mission, let’s just opt for clearance. What’s in hand is tangible."
Gao Xiaoyan’s vehicle stopped in front of a gray metallic building. She, keeping a distance, told Xu Huo, "Don’t worry, this isn’t the real Base W37 City yet. It’s a new city built by the mayor for training purposes. It’s half a day’s journey to the actual base city from here."
"Since Xiao Mantou is training, let’s meet him first and then I can take you to the main city." She gave them no room for discussion.
The true challenge of their mission came to light, not the hardships encountered along the way, but how to enter Base W37 City.
This new city wasn’t entirely enclosed, but the wilderness going from there was under W37’s territory, suggesting from its setup every stretch of road probably had equipment to ward off aliens, which meant even bypassing the major bridge and taking side routes to W37 would lead into surveillance zones, with the off-bridge detour adding at least a day’s journey. Also, neither side route was easy.
Considering the map, the surrounding environment of Base W37 City was harsh, being a prime alien activity zone. Logically the new city, almost guarding the functions, should be built outside the base city, but W37 was willing to invest more to carve a road between two cities, inevitably raising curiosity.
Xu Huo directly posed this question.
Gao Xiaoyan, smilingly, explained, "The base might be backward, but it also has its talent pool. We can’t just rely on external technology."
"So, this is a weapons experimentation base?" Xu Huo inferred her implication.
"Not entirely," Gao Xiaoyan stroked her chin, "Once there are results, other functions will gradually be added. The base city’s population is increasing, it’s barely fitting."
Xu Huo followed her into the building, looking at the technologically-advanced structure, and couldn’t help but remark, "This isn’t too bad."
"Years of effort only resulted in a small city, it’s not much," Gao Xiaoyan stopped in front of the elevator, "Let your friends rest, the alien can join too. It’s a good chance to rest. After you meet Xiao Mantou, we can head to the main city in the afternoon, and it won’t delay your clearance."
Xu Huo nodded to Shangguan Xi and the others, then followed her into the elevator.
Currently trailing behind Gao Xiaoyan were only the man with a ponytail and the man with lightning tattoos.
They reached the tenth floor of the elevator. Players and staff encountered along the way greeted Gao Xiaoyan warmly, referring to her as "Miss Gao."
"You hold a high position within W37?" Xu Huo asked curiously.
"Not really," Gao Xiaoyan casually replied, "but the mayor is my aunt."
