Chapter 936: Cute Little Rabbit
Chapter 936: Chapter 936: Cute Little Rabbit
The day’s time passed torturously, and the Linyin District between the two ore zones was like the filling in a sandwich cookie—so close yet not cool enough, though it did a good job of dissipating heat from vehicles.
Shangguan Xi stripped off his soaked clothes, wrung them out, and tossed them back into the luggage compartment. Holding an ice bucket, he said, "If it weren’t for the location, I would definitely not even wear pants."
"No one wants to see your bare ass," Pan Qiao teased him while using a prop to cool down Kuang Wenjun.
Kuang Wenjun, who wore the thickest clothing—a jacket over a long-sleeved shirt and long pants—seemed to detest others’ peculiar stares, so she didn’t even take off her hat.
Now everyone was so hot that they were frantic, and no one cared about her past.
"I’ll go for a walk," Shangguan Xi said, dropping an empty water bottle as he walked behind a large tree. Just past the edge of the bush, a fluffy rabbit jumped out, looking quite delicious.
"There could be an extra meal here..." Before he could move, the seemingly harmless rabbit suddenly bared a row of teeth as sharp as saw blades and pounced at him!
"Smack!" With quick reflexes, Shangguan Xi slapped on a glove and smacked it dead on. Just as he was about to bend down to pick it up, a second and third rabbit jumped out of the bush, also pouncing towards him!
Handling two rabbits wasn’t a problem, but after killing those two, several more jumped out, quickly forming a small pile.
This left Shangguan Xi unable to hunt "leisurely" any longer. Everything is feared when there are too many, even ants can kill a person.
Meanwhile, Gao Xiaoyan and the others had deftly gotten into the car. Xu Huo did the same on his side. Shangguan Xi leaped onto the departing off-road vehicle and looked back, "Are all wild rabbits this tough?"
It was more than tough; countless rabbits poured out like rice from a tipped-over rice container, relentlessly chasing the car. They were not only fast but also had strong jumping ability, especially a type with long ears that shot out like small cannons and occasionally hit the car body, creating a loud noise—not just from the car, but from their skulls as well.
Fortunately, these rabbits also feared high temperatures. Once the car left the Linyin District, they no longer followed but instead piled up like a wall, screaming incessantly in the direction they had left. From a distance, it looked like a monstrous wall, distressing to behold.
Both rabbits and humans struggled with the high temperatures. Without the Linyin District for cover, they had no choice but to travel under the burning sun. It wasn’t long before the outer shell of the car became scalding hot.
"One could fry meat on it," Shangguan Xi said gracelessly, lying on the ice bucket. "The ice has melted too... How much longer will this heat last?"
"At least an hour," Teacher Ai answered. "If we’re unlucky, maybe two hours, depending on today’s weather."
Xu Huo unfurled the "Umbrella of Justice" and waited a while before folding it up again—the prop couldn’t withstand the weather and couldn’t induce any rain.
"We need to cool down artificially; the car will be wrecked if it keeps overheating," Pan Qiao said.
Zhu Feiyun casually splashed the water from the ice bucket onto the car roof. After a sizzling noise, the water that ran off evaporated instantly upon hitting the ground, effectively useless.
"Is there a sunshade or something?" Kuang Wenjun said weakly.
"Why don’t you use a prop to speed it up?" Shangguan Xi suggested.
"It wouldn’t be effective," Kuang Wenjun shook her head. "We better use sunshade props."
"I didn’t manage to buy one, did you?" Zhu Feiyun asked.
Usually, the trades involved practical props, and no one would think of preparing a sunshade umbrella in advance.
Xu Huo traded for a sunshade cloth, which barely covered most of the car, but that was about it for effectiveness.
Fortunately, in less than an hour, Gao Xiaoyan informed them that they had passed the heat peak, and it would become cooler and there might even be rain, urging them to prepare in advance.
Hearing the word "rain," everyone in the car perked up their ears, Pan Qiao took the opportunity to wipe off some sweat, "Rain would be good, it should have rained earlier..."
The rain came faster than they expected, and quite suddenly. An hour later, thunderclouds rolled in the sky accompanied by alternating lightning, and heavy rain poured down like a waterfall, shaking the entire car such that even with full power, it felt as if it was pushing against several other vehicles and could hardly move fast.
The already battered car filled with water, and everyone put on their protective suits; Pan Qiao stopped the car and said, "Let’s take shelter from the rain, or soon I’m afraid we’ll need diving suits."
Xu Huo first contacted Gao Xiaoyan, then opened the "Sole Entrance" allowing him to drive the car in.
"What a hell of a place!" Shangguan Xi entered and immediately struggled out of the protective suit, wiping off water, "How can anyone live here? The rain could drown a person!"
"So, not much grain can be grown here," Kuang Wenjun said. "Sometimes it gets planted, but by the time it’s ready to harvest, a rain or snow can destroy everything. Constructing a planting shed requires solid skills and materials, not to mention how large a shed would have to be to sustain so many people."
The topic was quite somber, and no one wanted to continue the conversation.
It wasn’t long before Gao Xiaoyan’s car also came in, and upon alighting, Gao Xiaoyan said with a smile, "This rain might last for two hours, and in these days the artificial river will rise, making it tough to cross bridges. We can take our time."
"That much rainfall?" Xu Huo looked over.
"If we’re unlucky, an entire Base City could be submerged," Gao Xiaoyan said. "Last year, a newly constructed small base city was just wiped out like that."
"I don’t quite understand," jumped in Shangguan Xi, "Given such harsh conditions, why don’t you just move to another game zone?"
Of course, other game zones might not accept so many people, but there were plenty of game zones available.
"It is still our homeland, how can we just abandon it and leave?" Gao Xiaoyan chuckled. "Besides, we all hope that someday W37 Base Station can be restored to its former state."
"Players can leave, but where can the ordinary people go?" Teacher Ai stared at her. "Ordinary people are seen as a burden in any game zone."
"In Base W37 City, players and ordinary people are the same, everyone has their roles, it’s hard to say who’s a burden," Gao Xiaoyan seemed not to appreciate his words. "Any crop cultivation requires a lot of manpower."
Teacher Ai moved his lips as if he wanted to say something more, but he refrained.
Gao Xiaoyan wasn’t very concerned about him, and turned to chat with Xu Huo instead.
In fact, not just Teacher Ai, including Zhu Feiyun and Shangguan Xi, she didn’t regard them highly; in the subsequent conversation, she completely ignored them.
Shangguan Xi tried to interject several times but was overlooked and eventually ceased to speak, silently listening with Zhu Feiyun and others as Gao Xiaoyan created an invisible barrier between them and Xu Huo, making him seem like an honored guest of W37, while Shangguan Xi and the others appeared as inconsequential extras.
