Chapter 928: Chapter 928: Partners Who Kill on Command
Zhu Feiyun looked at Xu Huo several times, seemingly unable to believe that such an unassuming person was a high-level player.
"One bonus point of the Rank-C instance is triggering branch missions, with branch missions it is easier to get a high rating," Kuang Wenjun said. "So far I haven’t triggered any branch missions."
Sitting upright at the dining table, Xu Huo took a sip of water and turned to look at Teacher Ai, who was repairing a car outside. "Whether there are branch missions or not is still uncertain."
"If there is a branch mission, I think it highly likely has to do with the living samples," Shangguan Xi said. "Do you think that Alien could be like the hope that rescues ordinary people from dire straits? W11 took great pains to collect a few samples, and none were sent to W37, maybe there is some other ulterior motives behind the scenes."
"The mission only required me to take the samples to W37, they never mentioned anyone coming to take over or how the samples would be treated afterward."
"I have the same thought," Zhu Feiyun said. "If someone comes to take the samples, we can follow them to see, considering we already have a guaranteed pass."
Zhu Feiyun and Kuang Wenjun, clearly not their first time doing a Rank-C instance, speculated about the presence of branch missions. They did not plan to go alone, instead choosing to share the results, and naturally the risks as well, as the branch missions in a Rank-C instance were definitely not simple.
"What is the situation at Base W37 City now?" Xu Huo turned his gaze back to Shangguan Xi.
Shangguan Xi also hadn’t been idle, constantly searching for relevant information. "There’s nothing special locally in W37, the mayor of the Base City is leading a team out exploring and is about to return; their arrival is probably around the same time as ours."
"There’s one piece of important news. Some say there are players who failed the instance and are specifically ambushing other players near W37, and quite a few players fell for it, their bracelets got destroyed."
"Does a destroyed bracelet indicate failure of the mission?" Pan Qiao was quite surprised.
"Who knows, we can’t exactly test it with our own bracelets," Shangguan Xi said nonchalantly, "We’ll discuss it when we meet someone next time."
Xu Huo said nothing, Kuang Wenjun subtly glanced at him before saying, "Whether the bracelet is destroyed or not should be irrelevant to completing the mission."
"Why do you say that?" Zhu Feiyun asked.
"The bracelet is a customary means of exchanging materials at W37 Base Station. Our current mission, nominally issued by W11, uses bracelet authentication solely as a method of handover; the mission’s requirement is to deliver a living sample to Base W37 City, these are two separate matters."
Kuang Wenjun paused and added, "If players have already been confirmed as failing the mission, it’s very likely the samples died after authentication."
"How do we confirm whether the players are teamed up without bracelet authentication?" Shangguan Xi said. "And if a sample dies after authentication then it means mission failure? That suggests once a sample is authenticated, you can’t authenticate a second sample? That doesn’t make sense."
"If it’s to increase the difficulty of completing the mission, it makes sense," Zhu Feiyun stroked his chin, "Think about it, is a group of players who want to steal living samples easier to deal with, or a group specifically aiming to disrupt the mission?"
Shangguan Xi pondered and agreed, "This game is too cunning!"
Xu Huo also felt that the mission completion and the W11 bracelet tasks were two separate things. This was actually due to the opaque background information; players, knowing the task was issued by W11 Base City, would naturally assume there was no difference, but in reality, the game itself and the requirements of W37 Base Station were two different matters.
Of course, for safety, even if players guessed this possibility, they would consider transporting the cage as well for the sake of successfully completing the mission.
This was also one of the reasons he authenticated a second sample, even though he had already obtained one.
"The cage is too heavy, it adds to the difficulty of the mission," Pan Qiao said. "If we didn’t have the cage, just transporting an Alien would be much simpler."
"But we can’t just discard the cage." Shangguan Xi leaned on his chin staring at the outside cars and people, "Otherwise, why bother to go through so much effort to get a vehicle and a guide?"
Xu Huo patted his shoulder, "Teacher Ai needs to make it alive to Base W37 City."
Shangguan Xi grinned, "Brother Xu, what are you saying? I was just joking, not seriously thinking of killing him. After all, I carried him on my back to escape; how can I just throw away friendship that we have shared life and death with?"
Xu Huo smiled and nodded. "Ding Wei and Zhao Jiahua are already dead. They probably also marked the car; they were misled to the underground parking lot. When I dealt with the player with tattoos on his face, I ran into them and took them along with me."
Shangguan Xi was stunned for a moment before slapping his thigh, "They got what they deserved. Betraying partners midway should be punishable by death, and I’ve been displeased with that woman Ding Wei for a while. She almost killed me last time!"
"Kudos to Brother Xu!"
Xu Huo silently watched him for a few seconds before looking away, "You guys rest, I’ll go help out."
Shangguan Xi, who had just been warned, didn’t hold any grudge and immediately followed, "I’ll go too, the sooner we fix it, the sooner we leave!"
Lagging behind, Zhu Feiyun sneered, "So much for partners, ready to kill at a moment’s notice."
"You think he was only saying that for Shangguan Xi to hear?" Pan Qiao gave Zhu Feiyun a cold glance before adding, "I wonder what kind of person that Teacher Ai is."
"A top five thousand player certainly wouldn’t make baseless claims," Zhu Feiyun said, "It seems he and Shangguan Xi have been accompanying each other from the start; there must be something he knows that Shangguan Xi doesn’t."
The three exchanged a few brief words and didn’t linger in the dining area.
The task was physically demanding for Teacher Ai, who had a hard time moving and couldn’t keep up with the physical demand. Especially after switching the lines, to check whether they were connected required checking one by one, and clearly, he couldn’t concentrate for a long time.
Watching for a while, Xu Huo took over, "You watch from the side, mention anything if something seems wrong."
Teacher Ai didn’t insist, quickly pointed out what needed special attention, and then sat down to rest.
"Pan Qiao can drive; you guys take turns after that," Xu Huo spoke as he worked. "Shangguan Xi also has the maps for the new areas."
As he was speaking, Shangguan Xi approached with the map from W19 to W37, "Teacher Ai, do these areas match what you remember?"
Teacher Ai lifted his eyelids to look at him, then enlarged the map to compare. When he reached the latter part of it, he suddenly stopped, "There’s an extra river here."
"Was there no river here originally?" Shangguan Xi was puzzled. "Without a river, it surely wouldn’t suddenly have one appear out of nowhere in such a remote location. Who would put so much effort into constructing a new artificial river?"
"It’s Base W37 City," Teacher Ai said. "I had heard before I went to W18 Base City that the city’s female mayor, a decisive character, had plans to create an artificial river to block the path from other base cities to W37 Base City. I didn’t expect she actually did it."
