Chapter 915: Do Not Enter the Laboratory

Chapter 915: Chapter 915: Do Not Enter the Laboratory

Shangguan Xi, however, disagreed with Ding Wei’s view. "If the sample truly hasn’t been taken out of the lab, it indicates that the situation is more complex than imagined. Just because other players haven’t gotten their hands on it doesn’t necessarily mean we can, either. In the instance, it’s best not to overestimate ourselves; picking up leftovers isn’t so easy."

"It’s just one scenario; another possibility is that multiple players are in a standoff, and since the living sample wasn’t removed from the start, the likelihood of it being taken out now is also small."

"He makes sense," added Zhao Jiahua. "If the living sample really hasn’t moved, that means either that place is very dangerous, or the sample has been abandoned. It’s also possible that the sample is dead."

With the group’s opinions divided, Teacher Ai turned to Xu Huo, "You decide."

"Let’s head to the lab first." Xu Huo glanced towards the south gate, where there were quite a few people, deciding not to join the bustle for now.

Shangguan Xi looked at him puzzledly but didn’t voice any objections. Instead, she said, "Anyway, we need to visit both places; going to the lab first is also fine."

The car took a turn and headed towards the Experimental Building.

As they approached their destination, the signs of combat became increasingly chaotic around them. Some buildings that were already half-destroyed were cut across the middle and had collapsed, blocking parts of the thoroughfares.

"Using weapons to clear the way will consume energy; let’s take a detour," instructed Teacher Ai as he changed direction.

At this point, the two players who had been following their car slowed down and did not insist on continuing with them.

"They’re not following anymore?" Shangguan Xi was slightly surprised; she thought these people were after their car.

"Look ahead," Teacher Ai said.

The group looked up and saw that not far ahead, collapsed structures were slowly levitating—some debris from buildings was already floating weightlessly in the air, and now an even larger area of collapsed material was rising.

Seeing this scene, the faces of everyone in the car hardened in unison. If a player could control gravity, that would be an absolute advantage in this ruined city.

Within Xu Huo’s range of perception, three players appeared, and the changes in gravity in the space were also very obvious, dispersing from one of the players and covering an area that extended beyond the floating debris. However, at the edges, this force weakened, likely indicating the limit of the player’s control range.

Yet, all three players were on the outskirts of the Experimental Building.

"We’re not going to get crushed going over there, are we?" Shangguan Xi tilted her head upward, looking at the large slabs of collapsed structures, some of which were halves of buildings’ floors floating upside down and covering the road.

"Beep beep!" The car suddenly let out an alarm, causing Teacher Ai to immediately slow down, his expression changing. "Contaminants detected ahead."

"No wonder those two players didn’t follow!" exclaimed Ding Wei. "What level of contamination?"

"At least Rank-B," replied Teacher Ai. "The car wouldn’t alarm for anything less."

"It might be a leak from the experimental materials," suggested Zhao Jiahua, peering ahead. "Are we still going in?"

"The other players seem to be all on the outside," noted Shangguan Xi. "Arriving so early and not entering suggests the situation might not be so simple."

Xu Huo turned to the two people in the back seat and said, "We won’t know the situation until we’ve entered the lab. Shangguan Xi will stay in the car, and the three of us will enter the laboratory."

Zhao Jiahua agreed with a slight hesitation, but Ding Wei didn’t want to leave the car. "Leaving only Shangguan Xi alone might not be safe. What if other players take the opportunity to snatch the car?"

"Brother Xu, I’ll go with you," Shangguan Xi immediately said.

"You stay in the car," Xu Huo looked at him. "If necessary, we can abandon the car to protect people."

"Understood," Shangguan Xi nodded.

"We’ll enter the lab from different directions," Xu Huo told Zhao Jiahua. "This will divert other players’ attention. Expect ten minutes. Whether we’ve entered the lab or not, without finding any live samples, we’ll return promptly after ten minutes."

After he finished, he then said to Teacher Ai, "After we leave, drive the car to the edge where there are floating objects, and don’t get any closer to the lab."

Teacher Ai nodded silently without saying a word.

"I’ll go too," Ding Wei spoke up again. "I see several players nearby; it’s better to have more people."

"Brother Xu, whether we can find a live sample or not is up to you."

Xu Huo nodded slightly, and as soon as the car window opened, he used "Towards the Destination" to reach the Experimental Building directly.

One corner of the Experimental Building had been damaged, black as mold, like clusters of damp fungus clinging to the exterior walls and surrounding it, and looking from outside to inside, everything visible was covered with this substance. In some areas, there were bulging stacks oozing an indiscernible liquid, and the air also floated black dust-like material.

Upon arriving outside the building, Xu Huo put on an Invisibility Cloak, but still got stopped. There was a Spatial Barrier outside the Experimental Building, likely created by another player. The moment he was halted by the barrier, one of the players rapidly moved in his direction.

Though the Invisibility Cloak could hide his form for a moment, it wasn’t difficult for Advanced Players to discern his position. Therefore, Xu Huo also used a Silent Figurine. After leaving footprints outside the Spatial Barrier, he forcefully broke through it and entered the Experimental Building, directly ascending to the second floor with piano wire.

As he entered, the pursuing player arrived, accurately gazing at the location where Xu Huo entered the building. The player’s eyes gleamed with eagerness but ultimately decided against following into the building.

Once inside, Xu Huo quickly learned why several Advanced Players hesitated at the prospect of the building. Even if hovering without directly contacting the contaminants on the building’s surface, the black dust in the air would rapidly adhere to one’s body, and in the blink of an eye, it began proliferating on the Invisibility Cloak and protection suit. Both the metallic parts and special material sections of the suit quickly showed varying degrees of corrosion, and this took merely a few dozen seconds.

Within the Experimental Building, both walls and doors were enveloped in contaminants. Finding a live sample wasn’t going to be easy, at least not in a very short amount of time. This was fully proven by the three player corpses at different locations whose bodies were already covered with growing contamination.

But this wasn’t necessarily bad news for Xu Huo.

He poured a bit of Antitoxin made from the King Fungus on the corpses, and the rapidly proliferating black substance swiftly dissolved. However, it was too late for the deceased; the Antitoxin couldn’t work inside their bodies.

After scraping off the area covered with Antitoxin, Xu Huo put it into a sealed container and then into his prop box. He then stood up and started searching the nearby rooms. The electronic devices were unusable. After scratching on the wall, he found a schematic of the laboratory. Important specimens were kept underground. However, these were externally brought-in samples and weren’t necessarily stored in the underground lab. But if they were to survive amid these contaminants, they would, at least, be in airtight labs with oxygen supply facilities.

Having identified several key locations, he turned toward the contamination, which was unpleasant both visually and tactilely, and plunged his hand in, using the "Life Core" to dissolve the metal wall.

The exposed skin on his hand touched the metal wall for just an instant before the entire wall melted. The falling contaminants submerged his lower leg. After checking the blackened hand, Xu Huo sprayed some Cleansing Potion and, ensuring the poison hadn’t spread from his hand, continued to move forward.

After inspecting three locations, he finally discovered a lab with a living specimen.
