Kaidan Game Train: Abide Rule or Die! -
Chapter 910 Explode and Leave
Chapter 910: Chapter 910 Explode and Leave
Was it because they thought that since almost everyone was already dead, the remaining survivors weren’t worth the effort to save, and it was simpler to let them be wiped out, so the epidemic would naturally disappear?
Or was it that there were no potions and vaccines effective for ordinary people?
If it was the former, the complex and dangerous terrain and the small, scattered population might not be worth the risk, but this was at odds with the behavior of W11 Base City and other base cities going to great lengths to find antibodies—a clear dissonance.
People who became players like the young man would naturally not stand idly by and watch their relatives die.
So, it seemed that only the second reason was plausible.
"You haven’t looked for a potion for your family?" Xu Huo asked.
"Of course, I have," the young player said, with a hint of incredulity on his face, but he couldn’t say much more.
"You’re not sure if the potion you used had any effect," Xu Huo continued for him.
"I used all the suitable potions I could find on them, but the lesions didn’t disappear," the young player replied. "It’s the same as those initially infected who didn’t die."
With that, it was unclear whether they had naturally resisted the virus or if the potions had had an effect. The deserted base cities also lacked the conditions for experimentation, so this issue had not been clarified up to now.
"That’s why I want to go to Base W37 City," the young player said.
Since the W37 Base was accepting indigenous people infected with the virus, maybe they had made progress on the specific potions or vaccines.
The smell of rice wafted in from outside, compelling the three children to look outside. Xu Huo said, "I have a few companions outside; if you want a ride, come out after eating. I’ll wait for you for twenty minutes."
The young player looked at him in surprise, as if he couldn’t believe that Xu Huo was letting it go at that—without making any conditions or asking any practical questions.
In fact, the young player’s state was obvious enough without asking. He had returned specifically to take his relatives away; he wouldn’t be unprepared with adequate food and water. Now, however, they had fallen on hard times, starving in the desert. He must have shared some of their food with other locals, but this stretch of desert wasn’t easy to navigate. They might have lost their way or used the food to divert enemies or hunters. In any case, that was their current predicament.
When Xu Huo left through the archway, Ding Wei and Zhao Jiahua were walking toward the vehicle, one on the left, one on the right. Neither dared to remove their protective gear under the scorching sun. They had sweated heavily while out searching for the route, and their faces were red and their lips pale when they returned, nothing like the composure they had when they first stepped out of the vehicle.
They couldn’t wait to take off their protective gear and turn on the air conditioner as soon as they got into the vehicle. Shangguan Xi in the front seat was speaking to Xu Huo, "What’s happening up ahead?"
Xu Huo had also taken off his sweat-soaked protective gear and wrung out the water before tossing it into the luggage compartment. "We’ll be picking up a few people heading to Base W37 City."
There was no threat, so did that mean they were just ordinary people?
Having suffered the desert’s simmer, Ding Wei and Zhao Jiahua were even more opposed, "We don’t know how many days we’ll stay in the desert; there isn’t enough food and water for them... Unless they have some?"
"A few children," Xu Huo replied. "It’s on the way after all. It’s no trouble to take them for a bit, and we can use my food and water."
Once he had said that, the others naturally had nothing more to say. Even if Xu Huo didn’t want to share his food with the others, they knew to self-regulate.
Shangguan Xi first asked Teacher Ai how many days it would take to reach their destination, and upon getting a vague answer of three days, she turned to Xu Huo, "It’s no big deal, just a few kids. They won’t eat much. If you run short, Brother Xu, I can chip in a bit."
Xu Huo nodded with a smile, "We’ve all just leveled up to C-grade. Like you said, mutual aid is what we should do."
Shangguan Xi glared at the two in the backseat who were all ears before saying, "With Brother Xu’s word, I’m reassured."
Before long, the archway vanished. The woman, carrying the young player, led the three children toward the vehicle.
"Have them sit in the last carriage," Ding Wei said.
After they boarded, Xu Huo told Teacher Ai, "Let’s go."
The vehicle started up again, and having someone familiar with the route made things much easier. That afternoon, they passed through two Alien Activity Zones. Because they were prepared, they didn’t suffer much loss, and they also found a decent place to rest before the nightly sandstorm.
"You can drive your vehicle into my prop," offered the young player—Gao Chunfeng, producing an archway.
Hiding in the prop space inside an archway indeed provided shelter from the sandstorm. It was better than having to move spots every time they rested, and they could receive pre-warning.
Ding Wei and Zhao Jiahua ate on their own, while Xu Huo’s group cooked together. They had vegetables, and the skilled cook Gao Chunling even stir-fried two dishes.
It wasn’t quite what Xu Huo had provided them, but Gao Chunling said, "The kids don’t eat much; cooking less allows for more meals later."
Although players often roughed it, they could always enjoy decent food on the train. Xu Huo and Shangguan Xi didn’t eat much, letting the children have their share.
The three children, following their mother’s surname Gao, were Gao Xiayang, Gao Xiayun, and Gao Xiayu. After getting permission from the adults, they began to eat voraciously.
The dining partner, Teacher Ai, was very silent, and the adults soon turned their gazes elsewhere.
They spent the night resting in the dining car. Ding Wei selected a spot near Gao Chunfeng and struck up a quiet conversation, but Gao Chunfeng was wounded and soon physically exhausted, responding listlessly to her questions.
After talking to herself for a while without response, Ding Wei stopped pestering him.
The night passed without incident. The next morning, Xu Huo and the others got into the vehicle, and as soon as Gao Chunfeng packed up his prop, they sped out of the falling sand zone.
The wind was less severe today, and they made quick progress. Around noon, they saw a fallen figure ahead in the vehicle’s path.
Heat refraction created optical illusions, but as they drew closer, the silhouette seemed to be moving and yet wasn’t—dead or alive was undeterminable.
Teacher Ai slowed down, but Gao Chunfeng quickly warned, "Don’t get out, it’s human bait!"
It sounded unbelievable, but there really were people surviving in the desert by robbing passersby.
Shangguan Xi couldn’t believe it, "If they’re this capable of robbing players, why not just go to the base cities? What are they after?"
"Not everyone is willing to live on others’ charity," Teacher Ai suddenly said, then added, "There’s likely a trap ahead. Should we divert?"
"No detour," Xu Huo said as he opened the car door, stepped out for a few seconds, and then returned signaling Teacher Ai to drive. As they did so, an explosion erupted in the middle of the sand area ahead, the shockwave lifting waves of sand in all directions. Like a tsunami, the sand crested overhead as the vehicle blared with alarm. Teacher Ai instinctively reached for the steering wheel.
Glancing at the figure in front now running away, Xu Huo ordered, "Keep going forward."
