Chapter 905: Lies Sound Better Than Truth

Chapter 905: Chapter 905: Lies Sound Better Than Truth

"Regardless, you have to bring me along, why not try it? There’s no loss for you." Teacher Ai maintained the same attitude.

Shangguan Xi looked towards Xu Huo, seeking his opinion with her gaze.

Xu Huo’s purpose in finding someone to guide them was precisely this, and of course, he would not object; aside from Teacher Ai, there didn’t seem to be a better choice in Base City.

"Where do we get the energy from?" he asked.

"First, get a map of the city, and I will tell you where the energy is," Teacher Ai said.

Xu Huo took out the map he had photographed from the library from the luggage compartment and enlarged it with the communicator.

"Behind the Third Energy Factory there’s a storeroom," Teacher Ai said. "The backup energy is hidden underground, two meters to the right of the third floor tile from the entrance, there’s a hidden keypad. Open the floor and you can see it, the code is 33927."

"There are also backup communication tools inside."

"I’ll go," Shangguan Xi said. "Brother Xu, you stay here and watch them, don’t let anyone escape."

The Third Energy Factory wasn’t far from their location, and a round trip wouldn’t take much time.

Xu Huo nodded, "Be careful."

It was much more convenient for one person to go alone. Shangguan Xi didn’t plan to climb out through the pipes again; after fiddling around the protective wall for a while, she directly pried open a steel plate, put on a prop costume that changed colors, and climbed down the wall.

"He’s not very clever." After a while, Teacher Ai spoke up, "Sending him alone will only bring more players."

"It doesn’t matter." Xu Huo looked towards the direction of the city, "Those coming are either companions or those heading for their doom."

Teacher Ai seemed not to catch the implication in his words and continued, "Isn’t it better to go alone? Going to W19 Base can still find companions, bypassing the troublesome journey and not delaying the clearance. Maybe by now, the mission target has already been taken by others."

Xu Huo masked his feelings and said, "Don’t we have you? Taking a shortcut might catch up."

"How do you know I’m telling the truth?" Teacher Ai asked again.

"You’re a smart person, you should be able to figure it out," Xu Huo shifted his gaze. "Instead of testing my limits, why don’t you console the kid a bit. Everyone else’s beliefs are crumbling."

The dispirited youth nearby suddenly stiffened his neck.

Teacher Ai was indifferent towards the youth, "I am alive only to leave; these people here have nothing to do with me."

"Teacher..." The youth’s eyes reddened as he looked at him.

Teacher Ai did not avoid his gaze; after looking at Xu Huo for a while, he just chuckled, "Why bother, since we’ve already agreed on the terms, I won’t turn my head and kill everyone in Base City."

"I’m not doing it for them," Teacher Ai calmly argued, "Everyone who gets infected will eventually die; sooner or later makes no difference. It’s better to die sooner rather than suffer."

"There’s still a bit of hope if you’re alive," Xu Huo said. "Maybe a healing potion will appear soon."

This time Teacher Ai did not speak, his eyes cast down to the spots on the back of his hand.

Facing an ordinary disabled person, it’s understandable that players would underestimate them; after all, a normal person, even if aware of the instance content, couldn’t change much. Therefore, Teacher Ai might know that clearing this instance involves transporting humans, carriers of the antibodies, to other base cities—an ordinary person should be filled with hope.

Xu Huo didn’t linger his gaze on him for long, and turned to look back at the city. From a distance, he saw Shangguan Xi waving at him.

Along with her return were two other people, one of whom was Ding Wei.

Xu Huo took out the promised fifteen pounds of guide fees and handed them to the youth, "Since Teacher Ai is coming with me, he doesn’t need these things anymore. You take them back."

"I don’t want it," the youth said resentfully.

However, Teacher Ai turned around, sharply retorting, "What’s the use of integrity when you’re about to starve? Why not take the food and go!"

The youth didn’t understand his bitter intentions and retorted, "Didn’t you say people should always maintain integrity, and those without it aren’t human?!"

"Not having integrity is not being human. Do you think a dead person still counts as human?" Teacher Ai mocked.

Clearly, the youth couldn’t argue with him but still stubbornly refused to accept the things, saying, "I can find food by myself!"

"There are seeds in here," Xu Huo interjected at that moment. "The epidemic doesn’t seem to have greatly affected the survivors in the city. Since they can reproduce, they can survive. You’re not always going to be lucky enough to find food. Without enough food, how much longer can the people here survive?"

"As long as one player emerges among you, everyone’s situation can improve."

The youth stopped, clenched his teeth, and glared back at him.

Xu Huo just smiled, "Hope isn’t on you; it’s on those children."

The youth glanced quickly at Teacher Ai; getting no response, he picked up the bag from the ground despondently, slung it over his shoulder, and climbed the ladder. As he left, he asked Xu Huo, "I know you’re a good person. I saw you secretly giving sweets to the kids. Will you really take Teacher Ai to W37 Base?"

Xu Huo silently watched him.

The youth took a deep breath, "I understand. One day, I’ll also leave W18!"

After saying this, he no longer looked up and quickly disappeared into the tunnel.

"Lies are more pleasant than the truth," Teacher Ai said slightly tilting his head, as if talking to himself and yet as if speaking to Xu Huo.

Clearly, these contaminated people weren’t qualified as players, nor could their descendants possibly be.

Xu Huo didn’t see it that way.

As Shangguan Xi climbed onto the protective wall, the two players who had followed him also appeared, Ding Wei standing below using a large writing board substitute for speaking, "I saw you hadn’t completely taken away the energy resources. I helped pick them up."

Shangguan Xi’s gaze was frosty, "I was about to tell you that there’s quite a bit of energy left, my luggage compartment couldn’t fit it all. I didn’t expect someone to reap the benefits!"

"Is one luggage compartment of energy enough?"

he then asked Teacher Ai.

"Whether it’s enough depends on how hard the road is," Teacher Ai ambiguously said.

"Everyone is here to clear the instance, don’t be so stingy. Living experiment subjects can’t be packed in the luggage compartment, definitely needing people to form teams. Instead of searching at the last minute, why not team up with me, who you’re at least somewhat acquainted with? At least I won’t easily turn my back," Ding Wei gave a very compelling reason.

"Not likely to turn your back?" Shangguan Xi’s eyebrows were about to stand upright, not having had a chance to consult with Xu Huo yet, the words changed to, "My loyalty to teammates is proportional to how they look."

"She actually said I’m ugly!" Shangguan Xi was enraged, "I’m going to kill her right now!"

"Don’t you see she’s provoking you?" Xu Huo interrupted him, "If I kill you, I’m left with only one option of cooperation."
