Chapter 593: Chapter 593: The Corpse in the Refrigerated Truck
"Don’t joke with me like that." Huang Junjie couldn’t stay as relaxed as Xu Huo, for he had already seen the signs. There weren’t many players at the resort from the Twin Snakes, but the place they were heading to might very well be the Twin Snakes stronghold, and who knew how many Level D Players there were.
Clearly, he wasn’t the only one thinking this way, as the convoy was in motion when suddenly a player leaped out and ran off towards the roadside.
The convoy didn’t stop for this, nor did the Person in Black Robe give chase, but as soon as that player stepped off the main road, they vanished.
"Did he use tickets?" Huang Junjie was filled with astonishment and doubt, "Or did the Person in gray-robed do something?"
Which it was remained unknown, but at that point, everyone in the convoy earnestly kept to the middle of the road as they travelled, not leaving the resort until they entered a small town not far from there.
This small town was a halfway resting place, fully equipped, but now it was deserted.
After the convoy stopped, the Person in gray-robed finally explained to everyone that there was an entrance to a random dungeon in the resort area, the number of which was uncertain, with an unclear triggering method, so the Special Defense Department had cleared out everyone living nearby. Now, the area was almost devoid of people.
"It’s best if you all don’t wander off. If you don’t want to join the Twin Snakes, you can leave after dawn." the Person in gray-robed said. "This place is more dangerous at night than during the day."
After he had finished speaking, he left the remaining six players with white masks and the three people including Huang Junjie in a small building, leaving only a few Persons in Black Robe to watch over them. The rest followed Sima Xiao’er, apparently unconcerned with the remaining people.
"Can we really leave when it gets light?" a female player asked the others in a low voice, "Do you think the Twin Snakes Organization is reliable?"
"It’s unclear," a male player said, his hands clasped behind his head as he leaned back on the sofa, "but I think it’s probably true. Didn’t you see them all revolving around Sima Xiao’er?"
"Besides, we are all Level E Players, what could they possibly want from us that would make them go to such lengths?"
His point seemed reasonable, so another person said, "I think there’s a sixty percent chance it’s trustworthy. You might not know, but it’s said that within the Special Defense Department there are players with predictive abilities who can foresee the locations where some random dungeons will appear. They even evacuated people in advance, preventing any casualties."
"Is that true?" Guan Zuhong asked doubtfully. "Are abilities really that miraculous?"
"Of course, it’s just that we haven’t come across such rare talents," the player said. "Anyway, I’m definitely going to join the Twin Snakes; maybe I’ll even make a future for myself within the organization."
"Then why don’t you join the Special Defense Department or the Player Association?" Huang Junjie asked.
The player was quite sincere, "I’m not that strong to begin with. Joining the Special Defense Department wouldn’t get me any attention. I might even have to take on tasks from them. Whether it was the earlier riot in Sea City or the recent border conflicts, it was always the players from the Special Defense Department at the forefront. They even have to take the lead in scouting random dungeons."
"Who knows how many have died. I don’t think my life is that grand. Rather than that, I might as well get stronger before considering anything else."
"After all, it’s all a gamble. Where is it not a gamble?"
This speech gave the others present something to ponder, and they became more settled than before, no longer hesitant or anxious to leave.
After that, the players each found a room to rest. Xu Huo didn’t stay with Guan Zuhong and the others but stayed in a room alone. The winter night was long, and it wasn’t until after the others had fallen asleep that he changed his face and walked out of the room. The person in the black robe wasn’t watching every player’s room, so he managed to walk out of the small building effortlessly, avoiding the night watch and picking a high spot to settle.
After entering this small town, cell phones still had no signal. About twenty minutes ago, several vehicles entered the town and headed towards the warehouse in the back.
He watched from the rooftops for a while but didn’t find a suitable opportunity to enter, so he simply patted his back and called out the Girl in the painting.
The Girl in the painting had been sticking inside his clothing all night and was finally able to move about. The thin piece of paper landed on the ground and transformed into a person, enthusiastically throwing herself at Xu Huo.
Resting one hand on her forehead, Xu Huo said, "Go check what’s in the warehouse."
The Girl in the painting gave an "OK" sign with her hand, then turned into a piece of paper and floated towards the warehouse, squeezing in through the crack of the door.
Inside the warehouse at this time, corpses brought in by trucks were laid out one by one on a large table in the middle. Around twenty or so people in black robes stood around the table, meticulously cleaning the bodies before changing them into clean white robes and laying them out properly, and then transferring them to the adjoining constant temperature glass cabinets.
The entire process seemed like a solemn preparation for burial, but before the glass cabinets were closed, they would sprinkle some fresh flowers inside and then spray perfume.
"Is all this necessary?" a person in the black robe whispered in complaint, "Both perfume and flowers, then making us work overtime all night. How is this any different from before we became players?"
"Just do the work!" The person next to him scolded, then said, "Bring another body up."
The complaining player rolled his eyes and dragged another corpse from the truck, "Thank goodness there aren’t many today."
Footsteps moved away from the side of the vehicle, but Zhou Ning hidden deep inside the truck felt no relief. Previously, only the team with the number "four" had gone downstairs; she thought there was a special circumstance, so she quietly followed. Who would expect that upon entering the activity room, the person in the black robe started a massacre? She was hit with an anesthetic and realized she couldn’t run away at that moment, so when the person in the black robe made their move, she used a little trick and a prop to make them think she was dead.
The effect of the prop only lasted a few minutes, barely enough for her to be carried up from the secret passage onto the truck. The effect of the anesthetic hadn’t completely worn off. She could move, but it was impossible to escape from so many players. As the number of bodies in the vehicle dwindled, once touched, the people in black robes would know she was only feigning death...
Just as she was about to use the tickets to flee into the copy, the lights in the warehouse suddenly flickered twice, and then she saw a person squatting in front of her that absolutely shouldn’t be there:
Li Chun!
The Girl in the painting smiled and "shushed" her, then reached out towards her. The next second, the lights in the warehouse went off, and Zhou Ning felt herself being wrapped in something and taken out of the truck. When the lights in the warehouse came back on, she found herself in the corner of the warehouse, hidden among a pile of miscellaneous items. Looking through the gaps, she saw the person in the black robe moving a female corpse down from the truck.
Only her "female corpse" was left in the vehicle, she wasn’t there, Li Chun had taken her place!
Just as she was about to go out and rescue, Li Chun was carefully laid out on the table, where two of the black-robed cleaners even remarked on her good figure, a pity that such a beauty met an early demise, then smoothly changed her clothes and transferred her to the glass coffin.
Zhou Ning’s face was full of confusion. When she touched Li Chun’s cell phone in her pocket, she immediately suppressed all her thoughts. If Xu Huo brought Li Chun here, there had to be his reasons.
