Chapter 584 Friendly Gift
Chapter 584: Chapter 584 Friendly Gift
"The Twin Snakes usually only issue invitations to players with special professions or those who are exceptionally strong," Brother Liang had also calmed down by now, "It seems you belong to the latter category."
He took an invitation out from his clothes. "I received one, too."
"This organization is very sinister. After I got the invitation, I inquired about Twin Snakes. Some players mentioned that their friends who had gone to the gathering after receiving an invitation never appeared again."
"That’s impossible," Xu Huo said. "If the players who received invitations never appeared again, the matter would have blown up by now. The missing players you’re talking about—are they people you know?"
"Exactly." Brother Liang didn’t deny it, "But it’s true that players who attended the gathering have disappeared, and not just the two I know."
"They might have encountered danger in a dungeon or could have been targeted and killed by another player who also went to the gathering. Why are you so sure there’s something wrong with the Twin Snakes Organization?" Xu Huo asked.
"Intuition," Brother Liang said seriously. "My intuition has never been wrong."
Xu Huo looked at him for two seconds before saying, "It’s your ability, isn’t it?"
He also had the "Fifty-Fifty" ability; it wasn’t strange to see an intuition ability in other professions.
After taking the "Star-binding Sphere," he said to Brother Liang, "The messenger is already dead. You guys should start from other channels."
Seeing his five companions standing unharmed, Brother Liang, astonished yet relieved, said, "You’re letting us go?"
"Don’t want to leave?" Xu Huo paused mid-motion.
Brother Liang hastily made it clear that wasn’t the case, his expression quite complex.
Xu Huo had obviously not used his full strength against them. Killing them would have been easy. Six players, with all their items and potions, it was a spoils not to be taken lightly, and he hadn’t expected to have the chance to reject such an easy gain.
But they were hardly a windfall. Xu Huo only saw six rookies who got played around by a single messenger.
However, there was a silver lining.
"Can invitees bring family members?" he called out to Brother Liang.
"Bring family members?" Brother Liang looked at him hesitantly. "You really want to go? You can bring people, but one invitation only allows two guests; otherwise, you’ll be turned away at the door."
Xu Huo nodded, took out his phone, "Let’s exchange contact information."
The two exchanged contact details, and before leaving, Brother Liang still said, "I think it’s best not to take unnecessary risks unless you have to. There are people more powerful than us out there. Those players who were invited and had abilities all disappeared in the end."
Xu Huo nodded slightly and straightened his clothes before leaving the park.
Brother Liang and his companions watched his retreating figure, and they too soon disappeared into the mist.
Eight people were monitoring him. After Xu Huo dealt with three groups, the remaining ones had already fled without a trace. He went to the restaurant and called out Sima Xiao’er, who was halfway through sobering up.
"Brother Xu, is there something up?" Sima Xiao’er’s head was still relatively clear. "I already notified the colleagues from the nearby departments just now."
"It’s nothing major, just dealt with a few tails," Xu Huo mentioned in passing, gesturing for the Yang City Special Defense Department members who had arrived to go back.
It seemed they had received orders from higher up; the Special Defense Department personnel didn’t leave. Instead, they arranged protection for him inside and outside the hotel where he was staying, ensuring his safety and making sure nothing extra would be found in his room the next time he went out.
Chief Wu specifically contacted him to say that he could arrange for two players to accompany him to the gathering.
Xu Huo didn’t refuse this time. The next morning, the people chosen by Chief Wu arrived, and Zhou Ning and Hu Wenhao were with them.
"Long time no see." Zhou Ning greeted him with a smile, though fatigue was evident in her expression.
Glancing at the dispirited Hu Wenhao, Xu Huo asked, "Is it serious?"
"The Special Defense Department is at a loss too. They don’t have the right antitoxin," Zhou Ning explained. "He’s already tried many different potions, but the symptoms keep returning. I heard from Chief Wu about the fungal issue, so I brought him to you overnight."
"I’ll help him with the detoxification later," Xu Huo said, then turned to greet the two men selected by Chief Wu.
One was named Guan Sheng, a combat coach proficient in various physical skills with strong practical capabilities, and the other was Qian Xuwen, who was a recorder adept at rapid writing and memorization, with an eidetic memory, and skilled in tracking.
Having them stand at ease, Xu Huo took out the pre-prepared syringe and handed it to Zhou Ning, "The medicine will cure the disease."
Immediately after administering the injection to Hu Wenhao, Zhou Ning saw his condition visibly improve and was so moved that her eyes turned red. The two of them huddled together, profusely thanking him.
"There’s no need to be so polite," Xu Huo said, looking at Zhou Ning. "Go wash your face."
Zhou Ning wiped her face, realizing her makeup had been smudged, and she entered the restroom somewhat embarrassed. Moments later, she emerged refreshed, with her braid also undone.
After sitting down, she said, "By the way, I’ve come across a pretty good item this time."
She took out a pair of gloves as thin as cicada wings and placed them on the table, "Density Extraction Gloves, they can change their own density according to the different textures of items they touch. They’re somewhat similar to Quality-Changing Gloves, but should be closer to what you mentioned about being usable multiple times without repeating. They can switch density twenty times a day."
Xu Huo was searching for glove items in order to use "Omnipresent Strings." For the same object, the strings could only work once; to use them again, he had to keep switching to different items. Up to now, he had been using disposable gloves.
Previously, he had speculated that the item’s judgement on whether it’s the same object might be based on the object’s inherent characteristics such as color, hardness, or material, and so far, he hadn’t found any suitable item to match the strings.
"Let me try them," he said, putting on the gloves and randomly touching the table, immediately feeling the hardness of the gloves change. Although they became harder, they did not lose their glove-like nature. After grabbing the strings once, he touched other items to change the gloves’ density. After the density changed a second time, the gloves could still grab the suspended strings.
"Not bad," Xu Huo commented. The gloves could switch densities by simply touching any object, which was very convenient. Besides, wearing the gloves was like covering one’s fingers with a fake skin, capable of concealing fingerprints and palm prints without being easily detected – a good item for covering tracks.
"I’ll trade you a Level D item for them."
"No need," Zhou Ning chuckled lightly. "You saved Hu Zi’s life. An item is nothing compared to that."
"We are all friends here," Xu Huo said as he gave her the Lucky Bracelet he had obtained from the recent game instance. "It increases luck by 10%. I haven’t used this item myself, so I’m not sure about the specific effects."
Besides being an item that offered both effectiveness and aesthetic appeal, Zhou Ning readily accepted it and put it on.
Xu Huo also gave them some potions, including Evolution Potion, Self-Healing Potion, and Hair Growth Potion.
"This is a Rank-C potion. It should have better effects than the previous Hair Growth Potions you’ve had."
Nothing else needs to be said. The Hair Growth Potion is particularly useful for Zhou Ning’s attribute; she needs potions, but somehow never manages to get Hair Growth Potions after the game instances end.
At this point, Hu Wenhao raised a soul-searching question, "Aside from the necessary potions like Evolution Potion and Self-Healing Potion, the game generally provides potions based on the hidden needs of players. Brother Xu, how come you always manage to get so many Hair Growth Potions?"
