Chapter 562: Chapter 562 This Is the Good Stuff I Was Talking About
She always had a smile on her face, far from the fragile appearance she presented, and Xu Huo could tell that this wasn’t a choice made out of desperation, but something she had intended to do from the beginning.
"First, drag down the chief of the general administration, then involve both the administration and the government forces. Whether or not these two steps are successful isn’t too important. The goal is to divert attention; the core plan is to open the Fungal Nest, causing infection throughout the entire city." He looked at Lang Lang. "You’ve been preparing for this for a long time, haven’t you?"
Lang Lang looked up at the mycelium above. "Nearly twenty years. When I was first thrown into the quarantine zone with my family, it was hiding in an underground crevice that saved my life. Later, I climbed down along the crack, eating the fungi in the cave when I was hungry, and somehow survived."
"My family, and my uncle’s family, which is Lang Lang’s father, dozens of people, slowly all died off. Only a few children hid underground and avoided the pursuit of the Alien and other infected." Xin Hui said, "Later we discovered that this Fungal Nest was much bigger than what the general administration had surveyed and was still growing. That’s when I knew that Clown City’s underground was already permeated with fungus, it just hadn’t been brought to light yet."
"And Clown City took measures, reinforcing the ground with metal plates. The reason Clown City was built the way it is, with elongated urban height, was actually because those in the know intended to keep away from the ground. Moreover, with the depth of the underground nest, even if the fungus corroded the most solid of rocks, Clown City wouldn’t be immediately buried, there would be plenty of time to escape."
"With such major changes in Clown City, did no high-level players intervene?" Xu Huo asked.
"There aren’t many high-level players in Clown City," Xin Hui said. "Even if there were, would a mere Clown City be able to retain them? This place has always been a precarious city. Anyone who knows a bit of the truth, except for those who cannot leave, all those who could leave have already left."
She added with a hint of sarcasm, "The number of players in Clown City was never high, many are from outside, and they have no sense of belonging to Clown City."
Xu Huo nodded slightly. "But I see that the general administration has arranged for quite a number of people to search within the city. Clown City’s strength isn’t as weak as you think. Before long, all of your people will be caught. The explosion isn’t powerful enough to bring down the entire city, and it occupies only a small area. After dealing with your people, the general administration can seal off the area just as before, and it wouldn’t take long to seal off the ground as well."
"Unfortunately, your twenty years of preparation for revenge might come to an end in a single day."
Xin Hui’s expression darkened, then she turned to Lang Lang.
Lang Lang was stroking the black fungi on the rocks; it must have been highly toxic, as her skin turned black as soon as it came into contact, but the toxins retreated rapidly before reaching her wrist. After her hand returned to its normal color, the scars on the side of her waist also vanished.
Xu Huo narrowed his eyes slightly; he suddenly realized why Xin Lang was still composed even in this situation. It was because she herself was a source of infection, possibly carrying more than just a few types of fungi in her body. If these fungi could maintain a balance within her, what if she died?
Even if the underground nest plan failed, she could still achieve her objective through herself.
The ground was filled with screams and calls for rescue, one after another. Xin Lang’s face showed a fleeting pity, before she turned to Xu Huo, "I’d like to ask you for a favor."
"To destroy the underground structures of Clown City?" Xu Huo said. "Last night you sent someone to kill me, but they came and left quickly. Today, you showed up on your own, and I guess it’s because of the items I used."
"That’s correct." Xin Lang nodded, "The incident just now proves I didn’t guess wrong. However, I don’t want you to destroy the entire Clown City."
Xu Huo raised an eyebrow. "The protective wall? What’s in it for me if I do this?"
"I can’t offer myself to you," Xin Lang said with a slight smile, "Although I guess you didn’t follow me here for that reason. But I can give you something good, something any player would dream of having."
The fate of a spore—Xu Huo couldn’t be certain if the spore referred to the Energy Candy in 179’s possession, and the mission wasn’t clearly directed, but since it was triggered when he captured 179 and since Xin Hui knew about the underground nest, planning also to exploit the fungus, it was likely that Xin Lang and her group were closely associated with the mission.
Xin Lang’s offered "olive branch" was caught by him, asking her to sacrifice her body was just an excuse that both sides could temporarily compromise on.
"Sounds enticing, but how can I believe you without seeing the real thing?" Xu Huo said. "You’ve heard the commotion outside. With players from other areas getting involved, at the very least I need to see some goodwill."
Xin Lang paused for a moment, then pointed at his wrist, "I can dissolve the fungus on your body right now, but you probably won’t trust me to do it directly. How about we leave here first and discuss it further afterward?"
Xu Huo didn’t want to linger there either and followed the sisters back to the surface. A rescue vehicle came close by, stopping in front of them. A young man opened the back door, "Sister Lang Lang, hurry up and get in!"
The group got into the vehicle, driving away from the site of the incident.
Rescue vehicles were everywhere now, making their way through. With one more leaving, it didn’t attract any attention amidst the chaos. The government of Clown City was obviously understaffed and unable to control the area, not to mention the dust billowing everywhere with many trying to flee.
Along the way, people banged on the rescue vehicle trying to get on, but the driver in front just sped up, even directly knocking over several citizens who tried to block the way, forcing them to stop.
"These people have enjoyed the blood and tears of Cleaning Area Warriors for twenty years. Now it’s time for them to pay the price!" Xin Hui said with a harsh tone.
"They reaped benefits without knowing, and now they’re paying for it without knowing too. Quite reasonable," Xin Lang said calmly.
Hearing this, Xu Huo couldn’t help but give her another look.
Without changing her expression, Xin Lang had the young man who opened the car door extend his hand. He too was infected by the fungus, with several differently colored swellings on his arm and neck, his complexion flushed, and lips turned black.
"Sister Lang Lang, don’t waste energy saving me. Dying here in Clown City, maybe I can take a few down with me," the young man said with a smile.
But Xin Lang grabbed his hand, scratching her own hand with her nails. Strangely enough, white filaments flowed out with her blood, very thin and almost imperceptible unless looked at closely. These filaments followed her blood to the young man’s arm, seeping in through the open sores.
In just a few seconds, his arm began to shrink, and the peculiar colors quickly faded. Three minutes later, all symptoms of fungal infection on his body vanished!
"This is the good thing I was talking about," Xin Lang said, looking back with a smile.
