Chapter 559: Chapter 559: Closing the Door to Kill the Dog
Xu Huo glanced at the sky outside and frowned slightly. He didn’t linger any longer and turned towards the rest area. However, when he got to the door, he found two completely unfamiliar players standing there. Lang Lang’s assistant was arguing with them, "How can you two fierce-looking thugs follow Miss Lang Lang? Can’t we have two good-looking ones instead? Even if the green leaves are meant to set off the flower, they shouldn’t be all wrinkled. Going out like that will damage Miss Lang Lang’s image. Don’t you leave, or do you want the Chief Administrator to get involved?"
One of the players said, "The Chief Administrator has specifically sent us to protect Miss Lang Lang."
The assistant was frustrated and waved at Xu Huo when he saw him, but the two players didn’t budge, insisting, "Random people are not allowed near Miss Lang Lang."
"I’m a staff member here," Xu Huo said. "They asked me to come over and ask when Miss Lang Lang can leave, as there are some details I need to check with her."
Lang Lang, who was sitting inside, stood up and said with a smile to the two players, "Thank you for your efforts. The victory celebration is Clown City’s façade, and today we have the Chief Administrator’s distinguished guests. We mustn’t cause trouble because of my mistakes."
The two players didn’t keep her confined to the rest area but said, "The Chief Administrator mentioned that recently someone has been following Miss Lang Lang, and we must ensure your protection."
"I understand, no worries. I’ll stay in the banquet hall and won’t go out," Lang Lang said cheerfully. "When will the Chief Administrator arrive?"
The two players indicated they were not sure.
Lang Lang didn’t say anything more and followed Xu Huo to the main hall.
Upon reaching the hall, Xu Huo was about to leave, but two additional checkpoints had been set up at the main entrance—entry only, no exit allowed. He turned to look at Lang Lang, the woman who always kept her smile, whose eyes showed not a hint of turbulence as she communicated with the staff as usual.
As the sky grew darker and the rain hadn’t started, the day turned completely black; the lights lit up, and cars gradually arrived at the Sky Tower, with Clown City government officials bringing their families into the building.
The entire building was like a reservoir, becoming increasingly noisy as the hall filled with more people.
Ten minutes later, the Chief Administrator’s car arrived, and an elderly man with white hair stepped out under the protection of bodyguards, waving to the people around him.
This was the Chief Administrator of Clown City, the supreme leader overseeing both Clown Cities.
Following him out of the car was a man wearing a mask with black and white stripes. The two of them chatted and laughed as they entered the banquet hall. The Chief Administrator called over Lang Lang, "Let me introduce you. This is my esteemed guest, Mr. Yuan Cun Yuan, a player from District 001."
"The most exquisite Rose of Clown City, truly as they say," Yuan Cun gave Lang Lang a glance, his gaze not lingering on her like the others.
At the Chief Administrator’s cue, Lang Lang held out a glass of wine to Yuan Cun, but he didn’t take it. Lang Lang wasn’t embarrassed and simply handed the wine to the Chief Administrator instead.
The Chief Administrator raised his glass, "To Clown City!"
"To Clown City!" Everyone raised their glasses in unison, and the victory banquet officially began.
Various individuals began taking turns greeting the Chief Administrator, energizing the atmosphere. Before long, the Chief Administrator asked about the champion of the game, and Xin Hui, dressed in evening attire, elegantly approached. When she was only two meters away from the Chief Administrator, she suddenly lunged towards him!
At the same time, disturbances broke out in different parts of the venue, with attackers firing guns and holding officials hostage.
But Xin Hui’s side was not going smoothly. She was blocked by an invisible barrier before she could even reach the chief administrator and was thwarted in her attack, as the players acting as bodyguards had already positioned themselves in front of the chief administrator.
Player 179 fired shots to attract attention, and Xin Hui took the opportunity to grab Lang Lang nearby, threatening the chief administrator with her hand around Lang Lang’s neck, "Tell your people to back off, or I’ll kill her!"
The banquet hall descended into chaos, with many guests clutching their heads as they ran for the exits, but the doors of the building had been locked. Two individuals who tried to break through the door were killed on the spot by players who appeared later.
Screams erupted from the crowd, which then ducked to the ground, clutching their heads, after several more gunshots rang out.
"Everyone shut up!" scolded a player dressed in the chief administrator’s office uniform, and it wasn’t until everyone had quieted down that they turned to face the few who were holding hostages. "Surround them!"
While Xin Hui made a grand show of her stand, in reality, there were only seven or eight people involved. They had not even had the time to rally to her side before they were divided and encircled. Judging by the way the players from the chief administrator’s office were shooting and killing, they did not seem to care much about their survival.
"You can make your demands, but please do not harm Lang Lang. She is the only daughter of my closest friend. If anything happens to her, I can’t explain it to my friend who has passed away," said the chief administrator to Xin Hui.
Xin Hui, pulling Lang Lang back, demanded, "Withdraw all the players and open the doors to clear the building!"
Without saying a word, a few of the chief administrative officials standing beside the chief administrator shouted, "Dream on! Take a good look at the situation. If you don’t hand over the people, you won’t get out of this building alive!"
"I’m a player; there is nowhere I cannot leave," Xin Hui sneered and tightened her grip on Lang Lang’s throat. "If you want her to live, chief administrator, you’ll have to come with me personally!"
The chief administrator looked at her and said, "Who are you exactly, and why are you doing this? Isn’t Clown City’s welfare policy for players and warriors good enough?"
"Pah!" Xin Hui exclaimed angrily, "You fill your pockets with people’s lives, countless innocents dying horrifically, and you have the nerve to mention some damned welfare policy!"
"Do you think I don’t know the truth? The alien that appeared in the cleansing area twenty years ago has long been extinct, and the subsequent aliens were all bought by you from other game districts!"
"What reclaiming our homeland, it’s all lies. How many young people who offered their sincerity to Clown City died in the cleansing zone, killed by their own kin? You bunch of scum and villains, how can you sleep at night!"
"It was a necessary evil," sighed the chief administrator. "It’s all because of the poor judgement by the chief administrator twenty years ago, which caused Clown City to split apart; so many people, all needing to survive."
"Shut up!" Xin Hui erupted in fury. "You dare to mention the former chief administrator when you’re the one who stabbed him in the back! He established the blockade zone in the midst of turmoil, yet you betrayed him in the confusion. His family was kidnapped by a mob and thrown into the blockade zone, all of them died, wiped clean, even a child of two was not spared from being shot. You know exactly how you got into that seat of power!"
Only then did the chief administrator narrow his eyes and take a serious look at her, before saying, "You’re pleading for the former chief administrator, but the person you’re holding hostage is his only daughter."
Xin Hui’s expression darkened as she shouted sternly, "Get your people out of here!"
However, the chief administrator’s demeanor suddenly shifted from its previous submission as he said with a smile, "Anyone with a bit of sense wouldn’t come here with just these few people. Your intention to kidnap me is false; the real goal is to let these people go, isn’t it?"
He casually pointed at the government officials and their families crouching on the ground, clutching their heads in the banquet hall.
