Chapter 555: Chapter 555: Triggering an Additional Quest

The sunlight once again shone into the cleaning area, and by the time Xu Huo emerged from the Fungal Nest, he had already swapped faces, along with a change of his equipment.

Xin Hui removed her mask, and in order to accumulate the number of kills, she hadn’t destroyed her glasses. She looked at him and said, "The higher a person is on the leaderboard, the more obstacles they face. It doesn’t matter whether you change your face or not if you walk the same path as me."

Xu Huo said it didn’t matter, "There should be surveillance cameras in the broadcast of the live situation within the cleaning area, right?"

Xin Hui nodded, "Above our heads, spread throughout the cleaning area. Holographic glasses also have surveillance and monitoring capabilities, but there are too many people in the cleaning area, and insignificant footage will be filtered out directly."

The holographic glasses weren’t made very meticulously, something Xu Huo had known for a while, "Clown City truly is fearless."

The warriors who entered weren’t very strong, so even if they learned the truth about the cleaning area, what of it? It might even be turned into a thematic broadcast.

With the map in hand, the two of them didn’t need to take detours and headed straight for Chaoyang Clown City. Along the way, Xu Huo helped Xin Hui kill some Aliens to maintain the number of kills.

"This real-life game has several ways to win. One is the victory or defeat between Clown Cities. The second is solo hunting, regardless of whether it’s Aliens, opposing warriors, or companions judged as Aliens, they all count, and it’s a matter of quantity over quality."

"Then there’s team combat. Warriors are divided into groups before they come in, with the first place chosen based on the number of survivors in the group and the number of kills. However, team combat usually ends with the annihilation of the entire team."

"There are also various other awards, but the prerequisite is to complete the prescribed cleaning tasks without being infected and to return alive to Clown City, regardless of which Clown City it is."

But the death rate for cleaning tasks was so high that it was rare for many people to compete for the standings—the majority of people didn’t even realize they were still in this competitive relationship. Those lagging behind were overlooked, and those at the top would encounter interference, which related to the audience betting.

"It’s no different from gambling," Xu Huo said.

Where there are bets, there will be those who interfere with the outcome.

He kicked aside the corpse of an Alien at his feet, leapt down from the tree, and gave her a glance, "You’re being targeted."

Xin Hui pulled at the corner of her mouth, "It’s expected. If it’s not me, it’s someone else. Ahead is the toxic atmosphere area, be careful on your own."

Xu Huo’s protective suit rating was enough to resist the toxic atmosphere. It wasn’t until he walked in that he discovered many mutated snakes and insects in the miasma forest, and they wouldn’t avoid humans on their own but would instead follow the scent.

Xu Huo had used the Potion twice, but the effect wasn’t significant. Then, Xin Hui took out a box from her backpack, extracted a small green mushroom, and handed it to him, "Apply this to your shoes. This type of fungus’s spores like to parasitize snakes, insects, rats, and ants, which snakes and insects despise."

Xu Huo did as instructed, applying some to his shoes. In just a few minutes, a layer of fine fluff grew on the surface of the shoes, and the nearby snakes and insects truly avoided them.

"It’s a shame," he lamented. "The fungi in the underground nest are equivalent to a treasure trove, and just like that, it was sealed off."

"A simple fungal infection nearly destroyed half of Clown City; do you think those people would dare?" Xin Hui said mockingly.

"Are there no people coming from other game zones to collect samples?" Xu Huo asked.

"There might have been some before," Xin Hui answered, "but not anymore."

Xu Huo’s eyebrows raised slightly as he casually sliced an alien rushing towards them in half with his sword, picking a locator from its corpse, "Looks like we need to move faster."

Xin Hui pursed her lips, no longer wasting time hunting aliens, and instead quickly traversed through the miasma zone following the safe route on the map.

Even moving as fast as they could, it wasn’t until evening that they emerged, and across a flat expanse of the Gobi, Xu Huo saw the protective wall of Clown City.

But obviously, it wasn’t just the two of them who had crossed the miasma zone—Xu Huo sensed at least three other people nearby. He was about to say something when a bullet shot towards him, hitting him right in the temple!

"Moving Metal" instantly blocked the bullet, but Xu Huo still fell to the side out of reflex. Before he could make a sound, Xin Hui, who had been lying next to him, suddenly got up and sprinted away.

Apart from her, several other people hidden in the woods also rushed out. A gunshot rang out, and one of them was shot and fell to the ground; the others ran frantically forward. Apart from Xin Hui, the rest were members of the Blue Faction. Someone even shouted for help, pleading for the players on the protective wall to lower the ladder.

However, before they could reach the protective wall, bullets rained down from above, swiftly killing the person crying for help. Naturally, the others didn’t escape the gunfire either; Xin Hui and another tall, robust man dodged bullets as they raced towards the ladder. The two matched in speed and were at similar distances from the protective wall—until the tall man was shot in the thigh!

Xin Hui became the first to reach the ladder. She rushed inside, and then the elevator started ascending.

After she left, the elevator descended another two levels. The tall, robust man dragged his leg inside and managed to ascend successfully; after that, others tentatively emerged from the bushes.

This time, the gunmen in the woods held their fire because Xu Huo had already found them during the intermittent chaos!

He deflected two bullets with his sword and quickly got in front of one of them, kicking the person over. He stood on the person’s wrist to prevent them from reaching for the gun, and a thrust of his sword pierced their shoulder. "Do you know Xin Hui?"

The gunman was a man in his thirties, agony written on his face as he lunged at Xu Huo. However, no matter how well-trained, an ordinary person has limited strength. Xu Huo merely lifted his foot to block, and not only did the man fail to free himself, he even broke his own leg in the collision!

"You were cooperating with her to eliminate the other competitors; there must be a compelling reason to win at all costs," Xu Huo pressed down with his foot, trying to force the truth out of him. Unexpectedly, the man showed remarkable grit, stuffing pre-prepared poisonous mushrooms into his mouth. By the time Xu Huo pried the man’s mouth open, his lips had already started to change color.

With a frown deepening, Xu Huo hoisted the man up, forcing him to spit out the mushrooms, and then administered two injections of antitoxin.

The man convulsed from the toxin’s effects, completely indifferent to the person standing beside him, clearly wanting to die.

After standing in place for a few seconds, Xu Huo turned to leave, but just then the game popped up a prompt:

[Player Passerby A has triggered an additional quest—A Spore’s Fate. Players are advised to undertake this quest on the basis of ensuring the completion of the main mission. Successful completion will grant additional rewards and a score no lower than Rank-A Excellent for the instance.]

Xu Huo turned back and picked up the man lying on the ground, "No worries, I’ll take you into Clown City, and let others figure out what you and Xin Hui are up to."

Only then did the man react, looking at him angrily, "What do you want to do?"

"What are you planning to do with the Fungal Nest?" Xu Huo cut straight to the chase.
