Chapter 552: Appearing Proactively
Chapter 552: Chapter 552: Appearing Proactively
Whether it’s hunting or imitating, it’s just the habit of the fungus, which can be understood as the instinct after mutation, so don’t think too much of it. Besides, no matter how it mutates, it’s still a fungus. It can’t mimic human thought, let alone leave its nest and walk out of the Mist Forest.
"Otherwise, let’s just get out of here," Siming frowned and said. "This place is too creepy. If we keep going, who knows what dangers we’ll encounter. I’d rather give up on completing the mission."
"It’s no longer a matter of completing the mission or not," Zhuo Wangsun said. "Can we even leave this place?"
The fissure path they had just passed through was already filled with mycelium, and in their current location, there weren’t as many hanging rocks trails, and there was also no exit above.
He kept glancing at Xu Huo as he spoke.
Zhuo Wangsun had already completed the mission, and he knew that the reason why Siming and the female player hadn’t was definitely not that they hadn’t found the right place, but because they hadn’t killed ten warriors from the Blue Faction on their way here.
This was not hard to understand since these two probably killed enough people at the beginning, thinking they had completed the first task. They traveled through the canyon to the Mist Forest, avoiding danger wherever possible, so they still hadn’t killed ten people by now, and of course, planting a flag anywhere wouldn’t complete the mission.
But Xu Huo could complete the mission at any time.
Since he could leave at any time, Xu Huo didn’t plan to go so soon. He agreed with Siming’s suggestion to look for an exit. Since the original path was no longer passable and there was no ready-made exit, he might as well set fires along the way to clear a path.
The mycelium was not easily flammable, but making a channel for a few people to pass through was not difficult.
The four of them wandered aimlessly in the cave, going wherever they could.
Xu Huo led the way, several times ignoring Siming’s suggestions. After exchanging glances with the female player and seeing Zhuo Wangsun remain silent, Siming gradually calmed down.
About two hours later, they discovered more of the "corpses" wrapped in mycelium, and this time there were quite a few.
The cave at this point was not as spacious as the place they had come down from. It was only about twenty meters from front to back, but there were more than ten "corpses" wrapped on the stone walls, looking incredibly lifelike with limbs and bodies nearing perfection.
Continuing forward, similar caves appeared.
"These look like individual incubation chambers," Zhuo Wangsun mused. "Could it be that the fungus is really creating humans?"
Xu Huo cut open one of the "corpses." Unlike the mycelium that imitated Siming earlier, which was hollow and could roll on the ground, this had a weight similar to a real head.
Turning the head over, its insides were packed with dough-like mycelium, seemingly turned into a solid entity.
The "corpse’s" neck and insides were the same.
The four of them couldn’t help but fall silent. But at that moment, Xu Huo suddenly looked towards a branch tunnel in the nest. There was movement in the mycelium, as if something was struggling to break free.
Zhuo Wangsun and the others immediately got on guard, but what emerged from the torn mycelium was a familiar face.
"Xin Hui!" Zhuo Wangsun exclaimed in surprise.
The Xin Hui on the other side also showed a surprised expression, which then turned into relief.
"Do you know each other?" the female player asked.
"A player we met on the road," Zhuo Wangsun introduced, and then asked Xin Hui, "How did you suddenly disappear?"
"I saw a shadow in the woods and chased after it, but I didn’t expect to miss my footing and fall," Xin Hui said. "I’ve been wandering around since then. Did you also fall down here by accident?"
"Have you found the exit?" Xu Huo asked.
Xin Hui shook her head, then asked if they had any clues yet.
Zhuo Wangsun was wary of her and did not speak too clearly, only mentioning the strange occurrences inside the lair.
"The ’corpse’ is right in front of us," Xin Hui appeared worried, "Some places I passed by earlier were filled with dust-like spores; I don’t know if these fungi are toxic."
"Nothing would be surprising." Siming asked Xin Hui if she had found a way through.
Xin Hui glanced at Xu Huo and the other player, shook her head in denial, and then brought the conversation back to finding a way out.
"Actually, I have a crude idea," Xu Huo slowly said, "and that is to burn this underground lair to the ground."
"This can effectively eliminate the mycelium, and by the way, destroy those things that look like people," he said. "No matter if this thing can move or not, letting it continue to grow is definitely not good. Getting rid of these fungi might even score us some points in the clearance."
"Makes sense," Zhuo Wangsun immediately said. "Even if we can’t get rid of all of it, if we start burning from here and go up, we will definitely burn our way to an exit."
"That doesn’t sound very good," the female player said hesitantly. "What if it agitates these fungi?"
Xin Hui pursed her lips, then added, "These fungi have already mutated; what if they release a poisonous mist when stimulated? Protective suits can’t ensure safety one hundred percent."
"Let’s talk about it after we find the exit," Siming said. "Many warriors in the clearing area have explosives; even if we can’t completely burn these mycelium, blowing up the entrance will also work."
The group was discussing destroying the underground lair before they had even found a way out, when Xin Hui said after a while, "At least, let’s get out first."
The party of five resumed their search for the exit, but before long, the female player said with slight confusion, "Did you hear that?"
"It’s the sound of the mycelium moving." Xu Huo cut off a piece of the membrane, and the mycelium inside was abnormally active, wriggling like worms.
Xin Hui stared at the mycelium on the ground, abruptly shifted to the side, and with a "plop," a puddle of black liquid smashed onto the ground, followed by a "hissing" noise.
Their expressions changed, and looking up, they realized that the mycelium on the rock walls had been silently contracting and concentrating. The dangling sections hung heavily, and slowly black liquid began to drip from the entangled accumulations.
"Toxic!" Xin Hui was the first to cover her mouth and nose, then pulled out a gas mask and put it on.
Xu Huo and the others, always fully protected, saved themselves the trouble and fled forward before the black liquid could fall in large quantities!
In just a few seconds, the toxic liquid fell like raindrops without pause. The group ran headlong, not caring whether there were mycelium in the tunnel, and any time they reached a fork, they would hold their backpacks up in front and slam into it.
During the chaos, Zhuo Wangsun got stuck in a narrow stone passage and the others couldn’t follow, so they turned to run toward other exits. In their panicked, blind flight, the group of five ended up separated.
Xin Hui burst out of the toxic rain zone, crouched, and squeezed into a low cave passage. The cave was like a dog’s hole, and though its depth was unknown, she scrambled desperately inside, quickly emerging from the other side into a cleaner cave, where the stone walls bore no accumulated toxic rain, and there were no variously colored fungi or "corpses."
Standing up, she brushed the dirt off her body and took up her backpack, ready to move on, but as she stepped forward, she suddenly stopped in her tracks, whirled around, and discovered Xu Huo was standing right behind her!
