Chapter 541: Meeting in the Canyon
Chapter 541: Chapter 541: Meeting in the Canyon
"I’ve heard Yi Mao and the others mention before that some people can go their whole lives without working," Zhuo Wangsun said. "In any other gaming district, if the government implemented such a policy, it probably would’ve collapsed by now, but Clown City has a not inconsiderable population and still maintains such stability."
"After all, so many people are sent into the cleansing areas every year," Xu Huo pondered. The population policy of Clown City and the cleansing tasks essentially balanced each other out. Since the cleansing tasks didn’t seem to have much meaning from the perspective of eliminating aliens, could it be for the sake of experimentation?
That didn’t make sense either; the likes of Jin Dong who were infected weren’t gravely affected and held no value as experimental subjects.
"Can you spot any issues with this map?" Master Tu couldn’t help but ask.
Xu Huo glanced at him but didn’t say much. Instead, he turned to Zhuo Wangsun, "I’m ready to go check out the canyon region."
Zhuo Wangsun naturally said he would go too, "What about these two kids?"
"They stay here," Xu Huo said.
Zhuo Wangsun looked at Master Tu and the others.
"We won’t do anything to the children," Master Tu said.
"Can your words be trusted?" Zhuo Wangsun retorted.
"If you really can’t rest assured, you can send the children back to the fissure," Master Tu said. "After all, Gao Peng and the others have already been killed, and those who are left are unlikely to go down to the fissure to snatch people."
Xu Huo changed into a protective suit. As he pulled it over his head, he paused for a moment, sweeping a glance over Master Tu and the others, "You all have to come with me."
"Why?" The young people panicked, saying one after another that they didn’t want to leave the building, that they were no match for the aliens, and they would surely lack the ability to survive outside.
"I’m not discussing it with you," Xu Huo drew his gun and holstered it at his back, then picked out several decent quality submachine guns from their belongings to store in the storage cabin before saying, "You can choose to die here or to spill your last blood for Clown City."
Master Tu clenched his teeth, "Isn’t this just sending us to our deaths?"
"You can choose not to go," Xu Huo said indifferently, turning to nod at Zhuo Wangsun. He picked up Ice Cream and jumped directly through the hole in the second-floor floorboard. Upon landing, he shot the charred man in the chest as an afterthought, then turned his gun towards the others, "Grab your stuff and get out."
As the second floor wasn’t soundproofed, everyone down below had caught bits and pieces of the conversation. About twenty people, some angry, some desperate, but even with guns in hand, they didn’t dare to fire at Xu Huo.
Master Tu and his group quickly followed suit, distributed food and water to the others, donned protective suits, and walked out of the building with heads hung low.
"Where are the children?" Zhuo Wangsun asked Xu Huo, "Sending them back?"
"Keep an eye on them for me, I will be back soon," Xu Huo took Fish Ball from him and quickly left the building, heading to where he had encountered Fish Ball before.
After placing them into the underground passage, he instructed Fish Ball, "Hide here and don’t come out, nor go back. If someone comes, hide further inside. I’ll come back for you after I finish what I need to do."
Fish Ball quickly grabbed his hand, gesturing to ask if he would die.
Xu Huo paused, then left two antitoxins with him, along with a handgun, "Do you know how to use this?"
Fish Ball nodded.
"That’s good," Xu Huo did not make a promise but pulled the manhole cover over to close it.
The city was still some distance from the canyon, and under the high-temperature weather, individuals like Master Tu, who had not exercised for an extended period, were already exhausted before they even left the city, drawing plenty of complaints. However, after Xu Huo shot two young men who harbored ulterior motives, the others quieted down once again.
Although Zhuo Wangsun did not quite understand Xu Huo’s intent with these people, all he saw was a group of half-dead individuals among whom two aliens were blending in—Xu Huo was wrapped in a protective suit that covered his whole body, and although he did not have glasses, he already looked like a normal person.
"What district’s Player are you?" he conversed with Xu Huo, "Compared to Clown City, my hometown is much more backward, and I’ve only just started playing the game. I’ve been quite lucky; I have a modest inheritance and got a big advantage on the initial review train."
"I just don’t know when I’ll be able to become a Level D Player."
"If your ranking is high enough, a few fixed copy iterations could get you to Level D," Xu Huo said. "But besides leveling up, the biggest advantage is probably the addition of a cargo hold to store materials."
Zhuo Wangsun smiled at his words, "That benefit doesn’t seem very noticeable, just a cargo hold, even more of a rip-off than the initial review train."
"The game’s attitude towards Players is the same as Clown City’s towards warriors," Xu Huo said. "The only difference is that Clown City’s cleaning missions can end, but the game cannot."
Zhuo Wangsun slowly exhaled and, struck by a sudden thought while looking at the road ahead, wondered, "Could Clown City itself be a game? Indistinguishable from real-person combat?"
After he finished speaking, he shook his head to dismiss the thought, "It shouldn’t be possible. What government would be crazy enough to do this, killing so many people—it’s beyond mere mental toughness."
Xu Huo did not respond but instead looked ahead and said, "Someone’s coming."
Moments later, several people rushed out of a nearby forest, shouting at them, "Don’t shoot, we’re not aliens!"
"Aliens!" Someone in the troop was startled into shooting; half of the people who had emerged died on the spot, and one injured individual collapsed on the ground crying, "I’m not an alien! Why do you want to kill me!"
"Stop it, all of you!" Zhuo Wangsun rushed up to kick away those still intending to shoot, angrily shouting, "Are you deaf? Didn’t you hear him shouting?!"
The one kicked aside shouted back in fury, "They have been infected! If we let them come over, we’d all be in danger. You may want to die, but we certainly do not!"
Having said that, he disregarded the interference and aimed his gun again, but before he could pull the trigger, his head jerked violently, a mist of blood sprayed out, and he dropped to the ground.
The crowd turned back to look at Xu Huo, who had fired the shot.
After quelling the brief conflict, Xu Huo approached the two survivors, "Where did you come from?"
Still terrified, they replied, "The canyon... from the canyon..."
Before they could finish, someone suddenly shot out from the forest, soaring over ten meters high to look down at them, "Thought it was just three little cats, didn’t expect quite so many to show up all at once!"
And with that, he began shooting towards the ground below.
"Bang, bang, bang!" The bullets peppered the ground, clearly deflected from their original path, harming no one. As Master Tu and others scrambled away, the player hanging in the air glanced down at the thread on his arm and warned with a frown, "Mind your own business!"
Xu Huo did not give him a second chance to shoot. A tug on the kite string pulled the man down, and at the same time, Zhuo Wangsun drew his sword to slash at the falling player, but his blow was deflected by the bullets that followed!
"There are more in the forest!" Zhuo Wangsun called out, as Xu Huo had already used the paper note shooter to inject the opposing player with a needle, pulling him close, with the sword resting on his neck.
