Chapter 529: Chapter 529: Killing Amidst Illusions
"Ao! Ao!" One by one, the aliens leaped and sprinted, flinging their bodies, human-like in form yet feral in motion, through the shrubs and vegetation. They repeatedly opened their jaws wide, attempting to bite Yi Mao and his companions; at close range, they could even splatter saliva on their faces!
What was truly despairing was that more aliens kept joining from the jungle, and from a distance, it looked like they almost completely encircled them. They stood at the very bottom of the forming circle, while the opening in front of them moved forward, closing at a rate they couldn’t possibly reach!
"Why are there so many aliens here!" Yi Mao couldn’t control his shout, turning his gun towards Jin Dong, who had been flying at a consistent altitude, "He did this on purpose, leading them here!"
Unable to dodge while flying, Jin Dong could only use the skateboard he had been given to shield himself, managing to block two shots before being pulled ahead by the kite string.
Xu Huo had landed already, setting up "Emergency Shelter No. 101" at a relatively safer distance from the aliens. He grabbed the skateboard from Jin Dong’s hand, tossed the man in, and stood at the entrance, telling Liang Song and the others, "Each person must give one item!"
Their predicament made his demand seem like exploitation, but Liang Song and the others had no ground to bargain. From a distance of over ten meters, they threw their items over.
Once Xu Huo received the items, he stepped aside. Liang Song’s pair first threw Yi Mao and Wan Xiao over, and then they sprinted with all their might, barely jumping into the shelter before the alien horde could catch up.
"Bang!" The door shut, and outside, a series of light but concentrated thuds could be heard, like rain pounding all around.
Liang Song and the others took several seconds to come to their senses after sitting against the walls or lying on the floor to look around the space.
It was a small room, just over twenty square meters, even equipped with basic furniture like a table, chairs, cabinets, and lighting tools. A rechargeable lamp provided the current illumination, alongside an open mini-kitchen that, while not connected to a power source, could be used to prepare some instant food.
Inside, they were completely safe.
"Is this also an item? To think there are such items." Yue Weiping felt the floor, "You can hardly hear the alien horde outside; this item is really amazing!"
Under normal circumstances, they should have been swept away by the horde, but the room remained unmoved, which showed how sturdy it was.
"Clean yourselves with the Cleansing Potion," Xu Huo reminded everyone. "Don’t spread germs everywhere. If we contaminate our refuge, we’ll all have to go out."
At his words, everyone immediately reined in their movements, trying not to touch too much, and after applying the necessary Cleansing Potions and Antitoxins, Yue Weiping started to question Jin Dong.
Jin Dong explained over and over that he also didn’t understand why this had happened, and that he hadn’t encountered so many aliens when he was here before.
"The last time you were here was a year ago, during which you’ve been out of your mind, not knowing what’s happening. It’s not surprising if the cleaning area has changed!" Wan Xiao said through gritted teeth, "In any case, you’ve doomed us all. Now none of us can think about going back!"
"There’s another issue. What happened to you guys just now? Why did you suddenly start acting abnormal?" Liang Song asked.
Yi Mao was clueless, but Wan Xiao quickly took out his personal tool for a self-check. A few minutes later, after seeing the results, he frowned, "We’ve been exposed to something; maybe the air in the cleaning area is contaminated too."
Yi Mao swallowed nervously, "If the air is contaminated, what symptoms might appear?"
Speaking of symptoms, they would likely be over-excitement, reduced pain perception, and the absence of fear.
The Different Species Group invaded the jungle, and just when the warriors who had just arrived in the area encountered them, they had no choice but to open fire, as they had no chance of evasion. Just when they seemed doomed, the Different Species Group unexpectedly changed course and headed toward the canyon in front.
"What’s going on?" The person who had previously encountered Xu Huo and the others was also a survivor from the team, asking was a tall man. He had just walked up to the man in the black hat when he was shot through the chest by a bullet that came flying!
The bullet was originally aimed at the man in the black hat; one could tell by its trajectory. It just happened to be blocked by the tall man.
Using the tall man’s corpse as a shield, the man in the black hat saw a few scattered aliens appear in the distance and shouted, "These aliens are different from the ones before; they’re probably intelligent. Be careful, everyone!"
Under the thermal imaging, those gun-toting aliens clearly understood strategy and even formed tactical teams to move forward, with members providing covering fire, charging, and coordinating very closely!
The men with the black-hatted man had mostly undergone military training and knew the basic evasion techniques, so they quickly scattered, using the vegetation for cover and began a battle of wits with the emerging aliens.
It’s not easy to completely hide oneself under thermal imaging, but once they succeeded, it would be very easy to harvest the lives of their opponents.
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
Intermittent gunshots rang out, with casualties on both sides. They invaded each other’s combat zones, and not a single person retreated. Thus, as time passed, the numbers on the black hat’s side steadily diminished.
After several rounds of intense combat, there were not many wounded left on the black hat’s side, and he reluctantly sent out a retreat signal. After receiving a response, he crawled back, but he hadn’t gone far when a clawing alien appeared behind him, broke his knees, and strangled him alive after snapping his spine!
After the man in the black hat stopped breathing, the alien that strangled him emitted a strange sigh and quickly dragged his body deep into the underbrush.
Almost all of the remaining men on the black hat’s side were killed in this quiet manner. Some of their bodies were dismembered after death, discarded where they lay, while the intact ones were dragged away. In a short time, the jungle returned to its former quiet.
On Xu Huo’s side, after replenishing their strength, they left the shelter only to find the jungle unrecognizable, ravaged by the Different Species Group with much of the ground and greenery overturned, exposing plant stems and soil that emitted a strange odor.
With the lesson from before, they covered their mouths and noses, using their own protective shields, and advanced along the planned route. They discovered several warriors’ limbs along the way.
"Must have been torn up by the aliens," Liang Song said.
The group moved on and soon came across a pile of burning corpses.
Yes, a two-meter-high pile of corpses drenched in fuel and burning.
After inspecting the surroundings, Xu Huo came back and reported, "There was a firefight here."
"It’s that group we just ran into..." Yue Weiping frowned, "The alien tide has just passed, who could it be?"
Noticing telltale signs of slaughter nearby, Xu Huo paused before saying, "Since they knew to burn the bodies, it rules out the aliens; perhaps it was warriors trapped in an illusion."
