Chapter 523: How Do You Know It Was an Alien Not a Human?

Chapter 523: Chapter 523: How Do You Know It Was an Alien Not a Human?

"If I had wanted to take action, I would have cooperated with Kang Yongjie and the others just now," Xu Huo said calmly. "Don’t worry, I still know the rules."

Yi Mao said with a smile, "I could tell you’re different from the others. As long as we get out alive together, I’ll definitely prepare a generous gift for you, whether you clear the level or not."

Xu Huo nodded in thanks.

Afterward, the five of them continued on their way following the directions indicated on the map.

The further they went, the higher the temperature became, making the protective suits they wore all the more stifling. Not to mention Yi Mao and Wan Xiao, even Liang Song couldn’t help but slow down under these conditions.

Their water consumption was faster than expected, and Liang Song had to refill twice before they reached the border between the Gobi Zone and the swamp area.

"Is this the swamp area?" Xu Huo looked ahead at the dark land that resembled mud, large patches of ground reflecting the light of water, indicating that it was a waterlogged swamp—a place unfit for traversal, with no clean water or animals. Far in the distance, sparse greenery and the faint outline of low hills could be seen.

"The swamp area is constantly changing; the current map may not be one hundred percent accurate. We can only be more careful once inside," Yi Mao advised. "It’s best to avoid areas with water sheen; stepping into those spots can make it very hard to get out. Try to walk on the dry, cracked paths, and be as careful as possible."

Xu Huo looked at his companions packing up their firearms. "Vehicles can’t come in here, nor can flyers? Crossing the swamp area would be best done by air. Both the neighboring zone and swamp area are utterly untenable for on-foot trekking."

"You haven’t stayed in Clown City before, have you?" Yi Mao said with understanding. "The high-frequency sound from flyers can also agitate the Aliens. If several flyers emerge from the protective wall, they could potentially trigger an Alien onslaught."

"Just half a month ago, a team purifying water sources using ultra-silent vehicles to transport their equipment was surrounded by an Alien tide. Only a few players escaped; the rest, including three professors, all died."

"So it’s not that we don’t want to use them; it’s that we can’t," he said with a sense of helplessness.

Zhuo Wangsun and the others didn’t appear nearby, which meant they were completely scattered. The cloaked flyer that mysteriously appeared less than an hour’s distance from the protective wall couldn’t possibly belong to the Aliens’ rhythm, so it must have come from Clown City.

If high-frequency sounds truly could provoke an Alien tide, then the flyers sent by Clown City shouldn’t be shooting their own people.

Not to mention how vast the Gobi Zone is, combined with the swamp area in front of them, it was absurd to say that a few flyers or a couple of vehicles, let alone drawing ten engines, would likely attract the distant Aliens. The claim that heavy machinery and high-powered weapons couldn’t be used was inherently ludicrous.

And yet, the warriors participating in the cleanse at the behest of Clown City could only use smaller guns like pistols and submachine guns—weapons characterized by limited lethality and designed chiefly for single targets.

In other words, the cleansing mission arranged by Clown City itself was absurd.

Naturally, some people were definitely there for the rewards, but it was unclear if this had any connection to the players’ success in clearing the level.

"I noticed you have a new bag on your belt, can I see what’s inside?" Yue Weiping asked.

"Just a few stones I picked up," Xu Huo replied, disinterestedly cleaning his gun, showing no intention of sharing. He then changed the subject. "Let’s set off, or we’ll have to spend the night in the swamp area."

Yue Weiping didn’t press further. After entering the swamp area, grayish rocks could occasionally be seen on the cracked earth. The holographic glasses would automatically identify the type of stones, signaling if they were of any value.

Picking up stones on the road was clearly not wise, and all five members of the group instinctively ignored the glasses’ prompt and remained vigilant in different directions.

"Aliens occasionally appear in the marsh area," Yi Mao explained.

However, after trekking nonstop for three hours without encountering a single alien, their protective suits were covered in wet mud and had to be taken off for cleaning.

"The quality of these protective suits is just too poor," Xu Huo complained, straightening the flaking paint on the hem of his trousers.

Yi Mao and the others had prepared protective suits in advance and were now changing into them; Yi Mao apologetically said to him, "I’m really sorry, we didn’t prepare any extra protective suits."

You could tell the protective suits they brought were not cheap; Xu Huo waved his hand dismissively and took out another suit from his backpack, then put on the prop shoes "Heavy Steps."

Liang Song had a discerning eye and immediately noticed that, although the protective suit wasn’t common in Clown City, the quality was definitely up to par. He probed, "Where did Old Wu get his protective suit? It’s rare."

"Zhuo Wangsun sold it to me," Xu Huo casually made up.

"Aren’t you guys a temporary team?" Yi Mao didn’t quite believe that a stranger would trade such high-quality protective suits, especially since Zhuo Wangsun himself wore protective suits bought from the arena.

"We’re probably just more compatible," Xu Huo said indifferently.

He didn’t want to elaborate further, and the others tactfully did not ask anymore questions. After walking some more, Liang Song suddenly drew his gun and aimed at a withered tree, "Come out!"

Xu Huo looked over and saw a humanoid heat signature pattern emerge from behind the tree, gun in hand.

"It’s an alien!" Wan Xiao shouted.

"Bang, bang, bang!" A series of gunshots rang out, and Liang Song successfully circled to the alien’s back and shot its head off.

After the alien fell dead, the heat signature on its body instantly changed color, and the glasses prompted, "The Hesitant Species is carrying a virus, please, warrior, do not touch the corpse and sanitize your protective suit."

Having killed, Liang Song backed away and turned to see Xu Huo flipping the body with his gun, reminding, "The bacteria on the aliens are very contagious; it’s best not to touch them."

Xu Huo’s gun barrel had already moved to the alien’s face, not touching the holographic glasses. He was about to take off his own glasses when Yue Weiping suddenly kicked the corpse!

Pushing his leg away with a foot, Xu Huo aimed his gun at Yue Weiping’s temple. Hearing someone cock a gun behind him, he grabbed Yue Weiping and swung him around, "I just wanted to check the body; what’s the issue?"

"You can’t touch the body unless you want to kill us all!" Yue Weiping spoke angrily, "If we get alien blood and fluids on us, our disinfectant can’t kill the bacteria 100%. If we walk out, we’ll become human spreaders. I don’t know what you’re trying to do, but you can’t risk our lives."

"And you were just about to take off your glasses, weren’t you? Even if we are far from the protection wall, the light is still harmful to the eyes. If you don’t want to go blind, it’s best not to do that!"

"I’m not too convinced that there really are aliens with intelligence left in this world," Xu Huo said. "How can you be so sure what you killed was an alien and not a person?"
