Chapter 521: Chapter 521: Headshot Game
"You don’t need to identify the supplies yourself; the target eyewear will prompt you," Wan Xiao said impatiently. "No need to go into detail. You’ll find out once you’re out there."
After finishing his sentence, he walked a bit farther to talk with a few other companions, meanwhile complaining that players from less technologically developed game zones were too unsophisticated.
"He must be deliberately saying that for us to hear, doesn’t he know that players have exceptional hearing?" the female player said, clenching her fist.
"Let it go, it’s better to avoid trouble," Zhuo Wangsun advised.
Soon, the warriors were ready. The gate in front moved aside, and a strong light suddenly flooded in, too bright to keep one’s eyes open. At this point, a staff member said, "Close your eyes. The holographic eyewear will adjust within ten seconds. After that, you can use it to scan the environment outside."
Seconds later, Xu Huo opened his eyes and indeed, the scenery outside was no different from what one would see with normal eyesight. Ahead lay an endless Gobi Zone.
Everyone entered the elevator, and once the door behind them closed, he looked up to see the high-luminance lights installed on the protective wall, which now looked like any regular light.
With a rumble, the elevator descended to the base of the wall. As the door opened, they were met by a strong gust of wind. Yi Mao and the others in front instinctively leant forward as they walked out holding their guns. Only then did Yi Mao turn back and speak to the others through the transmitter, "The first sweep is set for five hours. If we don’t encounter any Aliens, that’s enough time to cross this Gobi and enter the Swamp Zone."
"The Gobi Zone has no cover and is the safest part of the sweep area; the likelihood of encountering Aliens is very slim. But still, you need to be cautious. While watching out for Aliens, also be aware of your surroundings to avoid being ambushed by others."
"The protective suit is bulletproof. An ambush might not be successful," Kang Yongjie said with a laugh. "If one shot doesn’t kill me, then they’re the ones who better start praying!"
Yi Mao nodded and made a gesture to start moving.
There were other teams entering the Gobi Zone. After traveling some distance with mutual caution, the teams gradually dispersed. An hour later, nearly no one else could be seen.
This made the highly vigilant players loosen their guard because, aside from the occasional small animals appearing among the stones and sand, the Gobi Zone seemed almost empty. Perhaps it was the peculiar nature of the surrounding environment, but everyone felt especially thirsty.
Xu Huo pulled down his mask and took a sip of water. "The food and water we’ve brought won’t last long," he remarked.
"No worries. Once we’re past the Gobi Zone, there’ll be clean sources of water in the Swamp Zone," Yi Mao assured.
At this, all the players momentarily froze. Yi Mao quickly explained, "To ensure we have drinking water, each area is guaranteed to have two to three clean water sources. And your task isn’t to contaminate water sources nearby; at least wait until you reach the opposing area where the Aliens are active."
"Would players actually contaminate water sources on a whim?" Xu Huo asked.
"Of course," Wan Xiao answered. "Even telling them doesn’t help. To get through the game, they contaminate any water source they find, forcing the government to send special teams each time to purify the water. That way, the warriors that follow can have water to drink. If you ask me, players shouldn’t be allowed to participate in the sweep tasks at all."
"Could contaminating their own area’s water source help them clear the game?" the female player immediately asked.
Wan Xiao squeezed his water bottle forcefully, "You try it!"
The female player muttered, "I was just saying. Some people just don’t have a sense of humor."
Of course, the game tasks wouldn’t be as simple as they seemed. Not just the water sources, but the third task of planting a flag at a designated location didn’t come with any instructions either.
"Could you share a copy of that map with us?" Hao Mei asked Yi Mao. Besides the map they were given, Yi Mao and his group were carrying a private map.
"Certainly," Yi Mao pressed something on his eyewear, and all the players present received a new map.
This map detailed the Swamp Zone, depicting a more precise distribution of the swamps.
Of course, Yi Mao wouldn’t give them the complete map and explained, "As we advance into each new area, I’ll send the map to you."
Zhuo Wangsun and the others had no objections, and neither did Kang Yongjie and his partner.
Xu Huo understood. These people had done their homework ahead of time; they must have been prepared.
After another hour’s walk, Wan Xiao suggested taking a break.
Yi Mao, after a moment of hesitation, agreed to a fifteen-minute rest right there. Wan Xiao offered an apologetic explanation that he didn’t mean to drag the team down but the temperature in the Gobi Zone was at least five degrees hotter than the data published, which made wearing the full protective gear even more exhausting.
"Does the status of the sweep area keep changing?" Zhuo Wensun curiously asked. "Then, how much use are the maps circulated outside?"
"The main features are accurate; it’s just that there will be some minor changes," Yi Mao responded, nodding to a team member who seemed like they needed to relieve themselves.
That team member walked a bit further away and was fiddling with something in front of him when Xu Huo suddenly heard a faint mechanical sound coming from the left. He turned his head, only to see the head of the relieving team member explode like a watermelon!
"Enemy attack!" Everyone scrambled to pull out the shields on their backs to protect their heads and chests. They formed a circle, back to back, but before they could even get into position, another shot rang out, blowing the head and shield off the warrior next to Yi Mao.
"I thought these were bulletproof?!" the female player screamed.
"I didn’t see anyone. What equipment is the assailant using?" Kang Yongjie kept his cool while trying to track the direction the bullets were coming from.
"Sniper rifles have a long effective range. Even if we find the shooter, it’ll be hard for us to get close enough to kill them. Let’s get out of here fast!" Zhuo Wangsun urged.
"Move, move! Let’s get going!" Wan Xiao pressed, instructing Liang Song to protect Yi Mao.
The group ran forward, maintaining their defensive circle, with a few players using tools to block the direction from which the bullets were coming. However, the shooter clearly had no intention of letting them go, bringing down another one soon after.
In just three minutes, they had lost three people. In anger and shock, Yi Mao yelled, "Who the hell is ambushing us! We’re all here to work for Clown City; what good does killing us do them?"
"Drop it. Since when do you need a reason to kill?" the female player said while running. "You’re obviously loaded; if not you, then who should they rob?"
"The sniper rifle they’re using is expensive, all the equipment we have combined isn’t enough to buy one!" Yi Mao managed to identify the weapon used by the assailant and gasped for air. "These rifles have a flaw; after three shots, they need to change the magazine, which takes two minutes. We need to use this time to run out of their shooting range..."
Before he could finish his sentence, another member by his side fell!
"Why?!"
With Yi Mao’s outcry, another shot came, this time aimed at Xu Huo. Sensing the bullet approaching, he jerked his head to the side!
