Chapter 499: Descent into Illusion

Chapter 499: Chapter 499: Descent into Illusion

If it had been a normal situation, that shot would have blown off Jiang Feng’s leg, but he clearly had other defense props that caused the energy bullet to lodge in his leg bone like a regular bullet, failing to penetrate.

Even so, this hit made Jiang Feng suffer. His face darkened, he dropped his characteristic power, and with a wave of his hand, he hurled everything within reach at Xu Huo in an attempt to create distance between them.

After using the second potion, Xu Huo’s physical strength and speed had vastly improved, so dodging these slow-moving objects wasn’t difficult. He fixed one end of the "Harmless Whip" to the shelter and, holding the other end, began circling to entangle Jiang Feng.

The rope, transformed into a thin blade, smoothly sliced through the incoming debris and then clashed against the invisible barrier next to Jiang Feng. At that point, Xu Huo finally saw the full extent of the barrier—it was just a thin rectangular shield one square meter in area that, after ten seconds of resisting the metal blade’s cuts, disappeared.

During the fight, Jiang Feng had moved two grid spaces, from "2" to "4," but hadn’t left the range of the Number Grid, so he was inevitably ensnared along with the player wearing the Red Bracelet.

However, the protective suits both were wearing did resist damage, and the metal blade failed to cut through the fabric.

The Black Bracelet wearer seemed frustrated and desperate after being hit, continuously manipulating objects to attack Xu Huo. However, he appeared to lack long-range attack props, and once Xu Huo dodged to the other side of the shelter, he seemed to be out of options.

On the other hand, the Red Bracelet player threw a ball that looked like a leather ball. After bouncing twice, protrusions on its surface squeezed out green-yellow corrosive liquid under pressure.

The effects of "Absolute Safety Distance" were still active, so Xu Huo didn’t bother to dodge; instead, he aimed the Note Launcher at the two men.

Both men’s vision was clear enough to see the squirming object Xu Huo was holding between his fingers from a distance. Jiang Feng immediately used "Raindrop Stone Piercing" to create a protective barrier; the Red Bracelet player, situated close to him, was also under the barrier, but still brandished a metal carved door in front of himself for protection.

"Pop, pop, pop!" The items launched by the prop made a chaotic noise as they were pelted by raindrops, but the creatures weren’t killed by the rain, some even though split in two continued to twitch and bounce upon hitting the ground, several of them attaching to the exposed parts of Jiang Feng’s calves.

"Leeches can survive even when cut in half, so these mutated leeches probably have even stronger vitality," Xu Huo said.

But it wasn’t just about vitality; two leeches burrowed into Jiang Feng’s flesh right then and there!

Jiang Feng, however, just looked down and swung his military knife twice in the air, stripping the leeches from his flesh, skin and all. Then he proceeded to clear the ground of the leeches with his object-manipulating ability, spreading his hands to expand the ring of rain to cover the entire area. "Rain keeps the guest!" he declared.

Though Xu Huo opened his umbrella immediately, his clothes still got wet from the rain, which made them unbearably heavy as if he were wearing iron, and this significantly slowed his movement.

Just at that moment, Jiang Feng also lifted his foot out of the Number Grid!

The duration of a prop’s effect on a player depends on the player’s strength. Seeing this, Xu Huo knew that the "Number Grid’s" effect on Jiang Feng was about to end. He nailed a kite string to the leg Jiang Feng was lifting, donned protective gear, slung the "Umbrella of Justice" over his arm, and utilized the "Moving Metal." Dropping the "Fair Wallet," he took out the Star-binding Sphere.

Early in setting up the place, Xu Huo had scattered hallucinogen all around to avoid arousing the players’ suspicion; he hadn’t used those disorienting props because they’re rarely effective. But, should Jiang Feng be drawn into his Spiritual World, these props would provide some cover, protecting against sudden arrivals to the spot.

Using the shelter for concealment and throwing out the Spotlight and the Glare Dance Ball, Xu Huo was ready. He then concentrated his main attention inside the Spiritual World.

This time he did not immediately reveal the spiral staircase but created countless doors in front of both men instead.

Facing advanced players, opening one’s own spiritual world also carried certain risks. If the opponent’s spiritual power was strong enough to remain unaffected, they could possibly take control, forcing a disconnection or even attacking the spiritual world, which would cause harm to the creator of the spiritual world.

Moreover, the range of Xu Huo’s spiritual world was not very large, and it was only achieved through the use of artifacts, so he had to try his best to keep people controlled within this range.

Because even if the trapped players were unfamiliar with the ways of Spirit Evolution, they might still instinctively break free from the control of the spiritual realm. So, he had to make these two quickly believe as true the occurrences around them, which is why he placed so many doors. With every door they opened, the influence on them grew stronger.

The two indeed were fooled; seeing the doors, they did not think much and went to open them.

The Red Bracelet relied on intuition, while Jiang Feng believed he was trapped in a container artifact.

A container artifact can contain a living person, and once a player enters, they essentially become part of the artifact, able to live inside it, disconnected from the game.

However, this state of being alive could not last too long. With time, the player would die inside the artifact.

Being trapped in a container artifact was difficult to escape, but it was not absolutely impossible.

"Every container artifact has an entrance. If it can put a person inside, it can also release them, so as long as we find the entrance, we can escape," Jiang Feng said to the Red Bracelet.

Seeing the doors of all sizes, near and far, the Red Bracelet said, "With so many doors, which one is the exit? And my artifacts are gone, too."

"Being trapped in a container artifact turns you back into a normal person, isn’t it strange that the artifacts can’t be used?" Jiang Feng looked around at the various doors, trying to find a pattern among them.

These doors could be created by Xu Huo as he wished. However, to lure Jiang Feng deeper, he deliberately made some variations on the doors, categorizing them based on style, pattern, and size, and after they had opened a few doors, he made two silver-gray doors.

"Choose one?" the Red Bracelet looked at Jiang Feng, "Which one will you pick?"

Jiang Feng, unable to discern any difference between the two doors, furrowed his brows and thought for a moment before saying, "Let’s each take a different one."

After speaking, he took the initiative to walk toward the door on the right.

Seeing this, the Red Bracelet player rushed forward, getting ahead and entering the door on the right first.

As his figure disappeared into the darkness behind the door, Jiang Feng cursed "Idiot" and then went to open the other door.

Indeed, the world behind the door was different. It turned into a pure white space, in front of him stood an excessively long spiral staircase, leading up to the unknown. But looking upwards, there was a very small dark portal at the end, emitting a faint light.

With a relieved expression, Jiang Feng immediately stepped onto the staircase.
