Chapter 487: Chapter 487: White Bracelet
Xu Huo didn’t touch the painting and headed in the opposite direction to the restaurant.
In the restaurant, a group of players wearing White Bracelets were dining; one of them seemed to recognize him. From the moment he entered, this person looked him over frequently. Xu Huo turned his head and asked directly, "Is there something wrong?"
The people at that table all turned their heads to look at him. The player with slicked-back hair snickered to his companions, "Weren’t you just asking who Ran Ying brought with her? It’s him."
"Who is this? Never seen him before."
"Most likely an outsider, player. Lucky guy, he managed to cozy up to Ran Ying as soon as he arrived."
"Compared to those fatty, Big Ear sows, sleeping with Ran Ying is like getting a freebie."
Clearly envious, the player with slicked-back hair said, "Eating off women and wanting respect—why cover up your bracelet? Show it off generously; no one’s going to laugh at you."
Xu Huo had tucked his bracelet into his sleeve as soon as he left the room, and by now, he had guessed these people’s identities—they were players from Zone 011 but not well off.
The gamification in Zone 011 had reached a level where almost everyone could become a player. Some people from the lower echelons of society would also choose to become players in hopes of changing their destiny. However, due to a lack of talent and insufficient finances, they would struggle in the game. Coincidentally, Zone 011 still maintained a nobility system, so some people opted for shortcuts.
Players like Xu Huo, who were invited or simply wanted to hop on a ship for a new experience, covered their bracelets to avoid unnecessary troubles when going out.
According to Ran Ying, the White Bracelet was just to restrict some less important guests from entering core areas. Likely many who received the White Bracelet heard the same thing, but with the slicked-back hair’s comment, the status of those wearing White Bracelets in the restaurant immediately shifted, and many faces turned sour.
"Did I say anything wrong?" The slicked-back hair player scanned the restaurant and said, "I just can’t stand people who mooch off others and are afraid of being talked about. If you’ve got the guts, eat the soft rice proudly. You’re here to sleep with someone, aren’t you?"
Among the White Bracelet-wearers were men and women. An outraged woman said, "Don’t equate others to your filthy acts because you’re into that. I came here with my fiancé; we are already engaged!"
"Then why didn’t you receive a Black Bracelet or a Red Bracelet?" retorted the player with slicked-back hair.
"I’ll be able to join my fiancé’s family with a legal marriage, and we plan to get married after this trip." The lady stood up and said, "I’m just an Evolver, but I look down on players like you. Despite having abilities, you choose to mooch and do nothing; it’s people like you who ruin the culture of Zone 011!"
This provoked a hornet’s nest. The players at the slicked-back hair’s table stood up, ready to hit someone, their hands raised in the air. The woman screamed and ducked, but how could she dodge a player? It was a man wearing a Black Bracelet at the next table who blocked his hand, "Bullying a common Evolver, does that make you proud?"
Both Black and Red Bracelet holders were invitees, not people that slicked-back hair and his group could afford to offend, so they reluctantly backed off and gave Xu Huo a warning look before leaving.
Xu Huo stood up, walked over to the woman, and offered her a towel, "Are you okay?"
The woman hesitated before accepting it, "I’m sorry, my comment wasn’t directed at all White Bracelet wearers, just that those few were speaking too nastily."
"It’s fine, I’m just accompanying a friend to broaden my horizons," Xu Huo replied smilingly. "But I didn’t expect competition to be intense in every profession."
The woman couldn’t help but laugh, "Actually, people like them can hardly be considered real players. They become players just to get government subsidies and then pull strings to enter those safe copies; they can come back without much risk. Many people from disadvantaged backgrounds who prefer comfort to hard work choose this path."
"Don’t argue with people like that next time," said the man with the Black Bracelet. "You’ll only end up at a loss, and your fiancé can’t protect you either."
"He’s meeting with friends, and I got a bit hungry, so I came here to eat," said the woman, beaming with joy at the mention of her fiancé. "He’ll be looking for me soon, and since he’s of noble descent as well, those people wouldn’t dare do anything to me."
"What bracelet does your fiancé wear?" the Black Bracelet man asked.
"A Red one," the woman replied.
After hearing her answer, the man with the Black Bracelet’s gaze shifted slightly, his lips quivered, as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he swallowed his words and turned away.
Confused, the woman watched his retreating figure and quickly added, "Thank you for earlier."
The man with the Black Bracelet quickened his steps and left the restaurant in a few strides.
"Must be something urgent," Xu Huo said to the woman with a smile.
At that moment, a brown-haired man walked in and waved at the woman, "Laura."
"Excuse me," the woman said gracefully to Xu Huo before making her way towards her fiancé. They embraced, and with deep affection, she adjusted his collar. "Weren’t you meeting a friend? How come you’re back so soon?"
"I missed you," the man whispered, burying his nose in her hair. "Your scent drives me crazy; I couldn’t stand it and left early."
The woman’s cheeks flushed as she playfully hit his chest, "Stop it."
The man left, arm in arm with the woman.
After watching them depart, Xu Huo drew out a cigarette, lit it, and walked in the direction the man with the Black Bracelet had left.
Wearing his glasses, he carefully observed the area the other man had passed through and soon found a miniature camera hidden among some flowers. Just as he pulled out the device, someone appeared silently behind him. Xu Huo caught the person’s stabbing dagger with a reversed hand and pushed the assailant back with a kick, clutching the camera as he spoke, "You’re too anxious; that makes it easy for others to get suspicious. The placement of the camera was too obvious."
The person was indeed the Black Bracelet man who had left earlier; he watched Xu Huo warily, "Who are you?"
"Perhaps someone like you, seeking the truth?" Xu Huo flicked his own bracelet into view.
The man remained silent.
Xu Huo paused and then continued, "Anything within an easily scanned area is likely to be discovered. See, I found your camera with just a casual glance. Do you think the crewmembers aboard this ship wouldn’t notice it?"
"Either place things in spots that people normally wouldn’t scrutinize under normal circumstances or use props. But then again, this kind of camera is easily destroyed by surveillance devices, and you won’t capture much."
The man did not react to his words but instead asked, "What do you want to do?"
"Black Bracelet, Red Bracelet, White Bracelet, isn’t it a coincidence that the bracelets given to the guests correspond to three types of player identities?" Xu Huo’s expression grew serious. "I met that woman’s fiancé you saw earlier, wearing a Red Bracelet. Quite the coincidence, and he’s a Cannibal Player."
