Chapter 456: Chapter 456 Exceptionally Talented
"This can’t be possible," Xu Huo said, his face showing disbelief. "If the Game Government can’t even do this, how could it possibly track him down time and again?"
"Given the Game Government’s control over the entry and exit of players and non-players, they can expand the search range," Dr. Deng explained. "Have you ever been to a game zone with advanced technological development? The AI technology in those places is very mature, and it can predict Professor Wu’s escape route based on existing data."
"And they still don’t know whether Professor Wu is male or female?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow.
"Technological advancement benefits more than just the Game Government." Dr. Deng hesitated before adding, "He might be from a Rank A Wormhole Point, and the thing I said earlier about the S-type Evolutionary Agents being monopolized was false."
Xu Huo nodded. If the Game Government had the S-Version Drug, they wouldn’t need to chase Professor Wu anymore. This was just an excuse for the likes of Miao Yu and others.
Naturally, not everything Dr. Deng said might be correct. The ’scissors gap’ in information is present everywhere. Besides, he is just a doctor in medicine research, not an internal member of the Game Government. Even if he could obtain some internal news, what he gets is certainly not the core information.
"Did you work for Hengxing Group before?" He remembered the son and daughter-in-law of Master Niese who had passed away.
Dr. Deng didn’t conceal this, "I have worked for different sub-groups in various game zones. Working for Hengxing Group offered better compensation and benefits, and my player identity was one of those internal benefits."
"So, you’ve resigned now?"
Dr. Deng’s cigarette was already half burnt as he took another deep drag, "I was laid off, for being unproductive."
He said with a bitter smile, "That’s not surprising. To make even a small advancement on the shoulders of giants is very hard. It’s not uncommon for someone to achieve nothing in a lifetime, but Hengxing Company won’t support such idlers."
Xu Huo flicked his cigarette but made no comment, then said, "You must have heard of the Temporary Pass, right?"
Looking surprised, Dr. Deng glanced at him, "How did you learn about the Temporary Pass?"
"From the mouth of a copy boss," Xu Huo replied. "I heard it by chance. A Temporary Pass can replace tickets, right?"
"Yes," Dr. Deng gave a very detailed description. "A Temporary Pass is like a universal ticket; any player can use the pass to board during its validity period set by the Game Government. They can search for and choose their own stopping points. The pass will teleport you to the nearest and most convenient station without limit on the number of uses. And it doesn’t categorize class like normal tickets do; you can ride any train."
When you have a Level E ticket, there are very few people on the train, and players are usually teleported directly to a copy site. After becoming a Level D Player, some changes occur: you might encounter players headed in the same direction but for different stops or copies, sometimes meeting players of different ranks, but the difference is minimal.
As long as you have a ticket, higher-ranked players can also enter trains meant for lower-ranked passengers and vice versa. Moreover, as a player’s Level increases, it becomes more common to see different ranks on the same train.
"However, Temporary Passes are usually only given to Game Government staff and players who have made outstanding contributions to the game. If you want to get one through other channels, it’s very difficult," Dr. Deng recalled. "I remember last year I saw a Temporary Pass go for a price of one hundred million White Notes at a virtual auction."
"Reserved for high-level players," Xu Huo commented dispassionately, as though making conversation, and then he asked some questions about Professor Wu.
Dr. Deng was forthcoming, though he tended to exaggerate—personally, he held Professor Wu in high esteem; according to his description, Professor Wu should be one of the top experts in game potion research.
"Professor Wu must be a genius deeply passionate about medicinal research. Unfortunately, the Game Government isn’t willing to provide him with a peaceful environment. It’s truly tough on him, a person used to the lab being forced to flee for his life..."
Dr. Deng’s sighs were merely heard by Xu Huo. That Professor Wu didn’t strike him as a rigid person solely focused on developing potions and unconcerned with external affairs. He was a very smart man, able to play a cat-and-mouse game with the Game Government for so many years, which showed extraordinary intelligence.
Besides, regarding his repeated escapes, even Xu Huo found it somewhat inconceivable. The technological civilization of the Game Government must far exceed his imagination, yet finding one person was so difficult, especially since this person was moving between different game zones, with tickets and passes leaving a trail—perhaps there were other channels, but after many failed attempts, one should at least be able to analyze Professor Wu’s behavior patterns. It’s quite puzzling that they haven’t caught him yet.
He turned his head to look at Dr. Deng, then his thoughts took a turn. Was Professor Wu truly fighting alone?
"You’ve been outside for quite a while," Miao Yu walked out, "the rain hasn’t stopped yet, why not come in and wait it out with us?"
"You haven’t slept yet." Xu Huo patted his trousers and stood up to walk inside, meanwhile giving Dr. Deng a hand.
"It’s really cold," Dr. Deng said, rubbing his hands.
Miao Yu’s gaze lingered on the two for a few seconds before she said to Dr. Deng, "I brought cooking utensils, I can heat up some water."
Dr. Deng thanked her, borrowed her items, asked Xu Huo for water, and heated some for them to drink, then washed his feet with the cooled-down water.
Xu Huo noticed that his hands and feet were red, seemingly suffering from the cold outside, and there were many scars left on his feet from healed chilblains.
"I used to live in a very cold place, got sick, so now I’m particularly sensitive to the cold," Dr. Deng explained with a smile, "a splash of hot water will make it better."
Chu Yuan had already opened his eyes, intending to have a cup of water. He had taken out the cup, but then Dr. Deng turned around to wash his feet, causing him to roll his eyes and say, "Good people don’t live long, while troublemakers linger for a thousand years. A bit of cold won’t kill you."
The others said nothing. When daylight broke and the rain stopped, Xu Huo went out and found several sizable puddles nearby.
Miao Yu followed behind him, carefully observing the surroundings. "I don’t see any footprints. If Qiu Xiangdong is still alive, he must have left, same with Tong Jian."
Xu Huo nodded.
Those two had left just as the heavy rain began yesterday and hadn’t appeared since. It wasn’t ruled out that they used props to hide their tracks, but he thought it was most likely that both took advantage of the rain to search underwater for potions.
"This hole is so deep," Chu Yuan remarked, leaning on a stick at the edge of a crevice.
Dr. Deng stepped forward to check and said, "This must be the reason for the skull appearing in the sky during rainy weather. Look at how long this ravine is, and there at the bend ahead, there’s a curvature similar to the jawline of a skull. The air flow is rising right from here."
The crack was very deep, and the entrance was covered with flowers, grass, and vines, their condition below unseen.
"When did this skull-shaped crevice form?" Xu Huo asked, glancing around. "We haven’t heard any strange sounds since arriving on the island."
