Chapter 455 Potion Clues

Chapter 455: Chapter 455 Potion Clues

The S-Version Drug, although it doesn’t require multiple doses in one stage like the other versions, still necessitates an upgraded potion after the evolution rate has increased.

Dr. Wu definitely didn’t place the potion to give to the Game Government; hence, one of his possible goals could be to create a true Evolver who isn’t controlled by the flaws of Evolution Potions. With this in mind, it’s very likely that he left behind clues.

There’s practically nothing left in the laboratory concerning his personal items, except for these paintings that were distributed everywhere, a large number of repetitive and similarly styled paintings, things even the Beren Clan didn’t pay any attention to.

But he had been looking at the paintings for a long time without deciphering any pattern, as each painting lacked location, time, or any other symbolic markers.

He put away the paintings and looked up at Miao Yu’s gaze. "Is there something you need?"

Miao Yu paused for a moment, "Do you need water?"

"I’ve got some," Xu Huo said.

Miao Yu nodded, turned, and started talking to Dr. Deng.

At that moment, a peal of dry thunder sounded outside, and Xu Huo turned to look out, only to see dark clouds accumulating and churning over the island, hinting at an imminent Heavy Rain.

Dr. Deng flicked her wristwatch, "This rain might last until night...will Ghost Shadow appear?"

"The copies are all over; there’s no reason for it," Chu Yuan immediately sat up from the bed, anxiously saying.

Xu Huo looked towards Dr. Deng. "You were present when Zhu Rumin died, right? Did Ghost Shadow appear?"

"Whether it’s the same Ghost Shadow you’ve seen or not, I can’t say. To me, it looked more like a Special item, something that could smear over a face and asphyxiate someone," Dr. Deng said. "Is the Ghost Shadow you encountered like a sheet of paper?"

Of the people present, only Xu Huo had fought with Ghost Shadow. Chu Yuan and Gan Qing had seen it but weren’t sure what the Ghost Shadow was or how it attacked.

"If none of you used such a Special item, then the players who died from the Kong Siblings’ side were likely killed by the Ghost Shadow," Dr. Deng continued. "The copies may be over, but that doesn’t mean Ghost Shadow won’t continue to move within the laboratory."

Xu Huo had caught the Ghost Shadow, but that ghost turned into powder inside the raincoat. At the time, he thought this was Ghost Shadow’s method of escape, but after receiving the game notification, he changed his mind; this might just be Ghost Shadow’s method of misleading.

He and Chu Yuan had seen Ghost Shadows of different genders, which intuitively made him think either there’s more than one Ghost Shadow, or that the Ghost Shadow could split into two, the two being interchangeable. So when Ghost Shadow turned into powder, it was very likely just presumed to be a failed capture and the powder was simply scattered.

He had not done so, so Ghost Shadow was still in his luggage compartment.

There shouldn’t be another Special item here.

"Since it’s linked to the game, Ghost Shadow might not necessarily come from below, but we should still be cautious. Let’s take turns keeping watch tonight," Xu Huo said. "If anything goes wrong, everyone should leave on their own."

Dr. Deng subconsciously moved closer to his side. "I’ll keep watch with you."

Chu Yuan, displeased with his boss, deliberately said to Xu Huo, "Be careful with this old chap. He’s up to no good. He’s been looking for ways to set up the Kong Siblings since they arrived. When you took him hostage, instead of resenting you, he’s been all friendly, as if he’s also harboring ill intentions—some kind of poison or anesthetic, maybe."

Dr. Deng was quite annoyed. "My stance is firm. I was coerced into coming here by the Beren Clan and did not wish to work for them. Mr. Xu is a good person and willing to offer me protection, for which I am very grateful. Don’t think of everyone so malevolently!"

Chu Yuan shrugged him off, leaving Dr. Deng fuming and helpless.

"It’s okay." Xu Huo patted Dr. Deng’s shoulder. "I’m a player; I can’t be incapable of dealing with a normal person."

Dr. Deng immediately indicated his need for protection, vowing not to stir up trouble unnecessarily.

"I wonder if Qiu Xiangdong and Tong Jian will bring people over," Miao Yu mentioned again.

These two weren’t inside the laboratory, but neither had they left the island. Just before Xu Huo came in, he had noticed the two were hiding not far from the laboratory, unsure if they were recuperating or waiting for something.

Same as before, everyone should be careful.

Everyone took their Self-Healing Potion and rested; by nightfall, it was decided that Miao Yu and Gan Qing would guard the first half of the night, and Xu Huo and Chu Yuan the latter half.

The rain began to fall on the island in the afternoon, growing heavier and heavier, making it impossible to see anything clearly through the curtain of rain.

By evening, the two people outside the laboratory left, maybe they had gone elsewhere to avoid the rain.

Miao Yu and Gan Qing had guarded the first half of the night when Xu Huo and Chu Yuan took over, and the anxious Dr. Deng, not daring to sleep, hurriedly followed, while Chu Yuan, seeing his eagerness, let him take the opportunity and went straight to sleep himself.

"I’ll go outside to clear my head," Xu Huo said before leaving, stepping outside and lighting a cigarette for himself, then offering one to Dr. Deng.

"I don’t usually smoke," Dr. Deng accepted it, lit it, and took a deep breath. "It’s a bit cold on the island with the rain."

"Is it?" Xu Huo replied casually, his gaze falling on the distant Lightning, and then he said, "What do you think about kite flying in a thunderstorm?"

Dr. Deng looked at him, "That would depend on what kind of kite you’re flying. This island is prone to frequent lightning, the odds of being struck are high, and the kite-flyer could also be electrocuted to death. But with this heavy rain, you couldn’t get the kite up anyway."

"True," Xu Huo turned to glance back at the laboratory, walked a little way down the corridor outside, and then asked Dr. Deng who had followed, "How much do you know about Professor Wu?"

Dr. Deng instinctively looked inside, but Xu Huo waved the Silent Figurine, "They can’t hear us."

"Actually, not much. To any Pharmacist, Professor Wu is a revered senior and also a lofty peak to overcome," Dr. Deng took a drag on his cigarette. "He often changed his appearance and name to work in different gaming districts. If not for being discovered by the Game Government, his colleagues wouldn’t have even identified his true identity. Also, it’s believed he’s still alive. According to our internal Pharmacist association’s statistics, he’s lived for at least two hundred years."

"So many people believe that Professor Wu is not an individual, but a title passed down through generations."

"Given he’s the one who developed the S-Version Drug, it’s possible his evolution process is different, and living to two hundred years old isn’t out of the question," Xu Huo said.

"No one knows for sure," Dr. Deng shook his head. "However, the S-Version Drug has only surfaced in the last few decades."

If Professor Wu is an Evolver, then he must have originally used the Game Government’s Evolution Potion; perfect evolution is out of the question.

"Regarding his identity, other than potentially having a child, is there anything else?"

"That’s really a mystery; to this day, no one knows his true appearance. In every place, the biological features he’s left behind are different. To put it dramatically, the Game Government may not even have figured out whether he’s male or female."
