Chapter 441: Murderous Ghost Shadow
Chapter 441: Chapter 441: Murderous Ghost Shadow
The Kong Siblings had also lost two players, leaving six remaining. Including Zhu Rumin, that made seven, but among them, three were injured—Chu Yuan, Wan Yunrong, Gan Qing, and Miao Yu’s main task was to draw fire away from everyone except Kong Hui.
The player in black, the player with the severed palm, the player with the gel coat, the female player with the broken arm, along with Zhu Rumin and Kong Cheng.
Some of these people would also have to protect Dr. Deng, so the numbers on both sides were roughly even, presenting an opportunity to strike.
The location was set for the first underground level, and after assessing their positions, they started making their preparations.
Players couldn’t trust each other, so it was normal for them not to lay all their cards on the table and each keep their own counsel.
Xu Huo also left for a bit during the preparation, returning after a few minutes.
Afterward, they simply waited for the Kong Siblings to arrive with their group. With some luck, perhaps they’d leave one or two players behind with Dr. Deng in the western half of the laboratory.
However, until the lights came back on, there was no movement from the Kong Siblings, and nobody took the elevator.
Chu Yuan was getting restless, "They wouldn’t be trying to wear us out, would they?"
"Do you use up a lot of energy staying here?" Wu Xiaonan, seated against the wall, was eating food he’d brought with him. "I think they’ve probably been delayed by something."
"That’s true, bringing so many players along with a civilian, there must be something important going on," Wan Yunrong seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
"Let’s rest for a while then," Xu Huo said, "We’d know if the elevator comes up anyway."
Being constantly on high alert was not sustainable, so they sat down to rest on the spot.
"But last night the Ghost Shadow didn’t seem to make another appearance," Gan Qing said, "I wonder if Qiu Xiangdong has turned into a ghost."
"Aren’t we supposed to be dealing with the Kong Siblings right now?" Wan Yunrong glanced at him.
"I didn’t mean anything by it, it’s just strange wondering who killed the players from the Kong Siblings’ side," Gan Qing said.
Ge Pan hadn’t explicitly stated what had happened to the player with the vacuum cleaner, but it was very likely they were dead—they had previously seen a player with Dr. Deng die from asphyxiation, and Peace Chunsheng and Chang Chengyong had also died the same way. If there were a suspect, Qiu Xiangdong would be a prime candidate.
Perhaps the player controlling Ghost Shadow wasn’t hiding as a boss in Deep Blue Laboratory, but was among them.
"Otherwise, why would he have run right at the start?"
Gan Qing’s suspicions were not unfounded, and the players secretly hoped the absence of the Ghost Shadow on their side meant it had gone to trouble the Kong Siblings and their group.
In fact, the Ghost Shadow had indeed been troubling the Kong Siblings and others during the latter half of the night.
Zhu Rumin had used a prop to hide among the corpses for a while. She didn’t emerge until Xu Huo and the others had cleared the hallways connecting both sides, and then she went to find Kong Hui.
However, she was unaware of the situation outside, so it was after Zhao Bi had died and the Kong Siblings, along with their group, had gone upstairs.
She missed both groups, only taking the elevator up to look for them after Xu Huo and his group had come back down.
She quickly met with Dr. Deng and the others, at that time, Kong Hui was venting her anger at Ge Pan for their failure to encounter anyone at the player ambush spot Ge Pan had indicated.
Everyone knew that Ge Pan’s prop had malfunctioned, but fortunately, since no one had shown up, they could go back.
Because the ambush plan had failed, it was highly likely that the players with the tickets had dispersed, and Ge Pan’s task was to persuade them to regroup. It was preferable to encourage them to take the initiative to strike, and Dr. Deng was a good bait.
The Kong Siblings wanted to wait for their prey to come to them, but little did they know that once Ge Pan left, he never returned. Kong Hui, losing her patience, took her people to the morgue, unaware of why the elevator had suddenly stopped working.
She had only tried to dismantle an elevator, but then something strange happened—the female player with the severed arm who stood behind her disappeared without a sound, and the player in the gelatinous jacket did not notice how the other vanished.
"Could it be that those players with the tickets didn’t go up?" Kong Hui guessed, splitting up with her companion to search for people, and eventually saw the body of the female player in a corner where the dust was slightly disturbed. She had died of suffocation.
"This wasn’t done by the players with the tickets," said the player in the gelatinous jacket. "Could it be, like Zhu Rumin said, that there are others here?"
"Impossible," Kong Hui said decisively. "If there really were others, the Beren Clan wouldn’t have kept us in the dark."
"Perhaps they don’t know either. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have sent people over and over again and still not found the real potion," retorted the other.
Although Kong Hui seemed reckless, she was actually cautious. After one player had died, she didn’t rush upwards. Instead, she retreated back to the laboratory on the west and sought confirmation from Zhu Rumin.
Zhu Rumin detailed the events and said, "I was cozily chatting with Wu Xiaonan, hoping to find an opportunity to make a move, but I didn’t expect the Ghost Shadow to appear on me. Those people are not easy to deal with; I had no choice but to escape."
"So you’re saying there really is a Ghost Shadow?" Kong Hui frowned and looked at her brother. "The Beren Clan didn’t tell us the truth."
But Kong Cheng said, "They didn’t dare. During the time we left Sayre Coast, the Beren Clan also sent a few players in here. Some returned without success but with few casualties, yet two of the groups were completely annihilated."
"At that time, it was suspected to be the work of the players with the tickets," Kong Hui said.
"Now it seems it may not be the case," Kong Cheng replied. "Those who returned alive knew nothing of the Ghost Shadow, which shows they had never encountered it. Yet three of our people suffocated to death."
"Just like the players with the tickets," Zhu Rumin couldn’t help saying.
"So are you saying that, up to now, all the dead players were killed by this so-called Ghost Shadow?" Lou Fu was somewhat incredulous. "Have you seen the Ghost Shadow?"
Zhu Rumin shook her head but just as she was about to say something, her gaze suddenly leaped past him to the glass window behind him, and she said in panic, "The Ghost Shadow!"
Everyone immediately turned around, but they only managed to catch a quick glimpse of an afterimage flashing by.
The Kong Siblings sprung into action—Kong Hui actually managed to corner the Ghost Shadow. She picked up dual swords and chased after it, slashing along the wall. A round of attacks left more than a dozen deep and long sword scars on the wall, but the Ghost Shadow drifted away unhindered.
"Choose your target!" Kong Cheng yelled from a distance, stretching out his hand towards the Ghost Shadow. Then the gloomy and frightening female shadow was violently pinned to the wall, and as Kong Cheng exerted force, a thin layer, like a shadow, slowly rose from the wall.
It was like a layer of tape stuck on the wall. The Ghost Shadow made a ’shushing’ sound as it was peeled off, but after a struggle, it still failed to be removed, reattaching to the wall and swiftly disappearing into the darkness. Before the Kong Siblings could follow, a shout suddenly rose from Dr. Deng’s location. They turned around, only to find another Ghost Shadow enveloping Zhu Rumin!
Zhu Rumin’s head was wrapped up, and she was struggling intensely. The people beside her did not attempt to save her. The player in the gelatinous jacket took out a plastic bag and blew into it; the palm-sized transparent bag suddenly grew to the height of a person and covered Zhu Rumin from above, trapping her and the Ghost Shadow together!
