Chapter 408: Chapter 408: The Useless Adult
This player turned out to be the one who gained the most practical loot, apart from the Holy Sword Society player killed by Xu Huo, while Brother Tu, who seemed like an easy target, only had a few useful items: a toy sword that could "give you a six-and-a-half-meter head start" and a pair of "Jumping Marbles" that could track targets for attacks; the rest of his props weren’t very useful.
As for potions, Brother Tu had even fewer, but White Notes had amassed quite a lot, a whole three hundred thousand.
Plucking over four hundred thousand White Notes from these two people, Xu Huo was barely able to alleviate his current embarrassing state of near-empty pockets.
The Super Evolution he was most concerned about wasn’t found with Brother Tu either, but he wasn’t disappointed since he believed Madame Butterfly probably knew much more when compared to Brother Tu.
After stowing away the items, he took a closer look at the potions.
Half of the potions of the Wooden Sword Player were from the government office, marked with the logo of the office, mainly consisting of Evolution Potions, Self-Healing Potions, and Hemostatic Potions; it was Xu Huo’s first time getting a Rank-B Self-Healing Potion.
Self-Healing Potions below Rank-C all had the effect of stopping bleeding, pain relief, and accelerating wound healing, but the Rank-B Self-Healing Potion went a step further. The potion had a regenerating cell added to it that could quickly regenerate torn muscles and even bones.
Of course, such regeneration wasn’t instantaneous but offered a significant discount on the normal recovery time, and its effects were better on players with higher evolution rates.
Swirling the pale cyan liquid in the glass tube, Xu Huo couldn’t help thinking if the game can even regenerate wounds, then is there really no solution to the flaws in the Evolution Potion?
Time has passed; if Dr. Wu isn’t dead by now, maybe he’s already been caught by the Hengxing Group.
Putting down the Self-Healing Potion, he then looked at the other three bottles of potions that didn’t come with a user guide, only labeled:
"Something that will absolutely blow your mind."
The potion column didn’t have a specific name for this kind of potion. When put in, it showed up as "Homemade Medicine," and since the Wooden Sword Player was involved with plants, it was likely extracted from some unique component of a plant.
Putting on the "Oxygen Supply," he unstoppered the bottle and a rich fragrance emerged.
"Oxygen Supply" could greatly reduce the gas exchange between the player and the outside world, so Xu Huo only managed to smell a strong, indescribable, and irritating stench, but with the item protecting him, it was so potent – one could imagine its lethality.
Just as he was about to put the potions away, a round ball suddenly flew in through the window. It struck his arm and opened a gap in its belly to swallow the fallen potion, then jumped across the desk, gobbling up the remaining bottles before belching at him.
Xu Huo stepped onto the balcony and called out to the window not too far away, "Isn’t it a bit much to eat and take from my home?"
"Your potions weren’t even worth my attention," Madame Butterfly’s voice came through, "I collected them to prevent being woken up by the stench in the middle of the night."
The ball hopped out of the window and down to the ground, then ricocheted back up into Madame Butterfly’s window.
"Your item is still here with me, do you want it?" Xu Huo took out a seed-sized little stone chip, which was previously an ornament on her folding fan, stolen by the greedy snake.
Madame Butterfly ignored him, and the window on the balcony slammed shut with a "bang."
Xu Huo chuckled, returned to the room, and removed the "Oxygen Supply," but the next second he put it back on and took out a "fresh-smelling dry flower" to cleanse the air.
Nobody in the castle except Mr. Dong likely slept well that night. Although the dry flower continuously released a pleasant fragrance, the stench, which seemed to come from something unspecified, was lingering and clung to furniture and decorations. Mixed with the scent, the whole castle alternated between fragrant and foul, which was utterly disorienting.
"Indeed, something that will absolutely blow your mind," Madame Butterfly serenely commented while dining in the restaurant.
While Xu Huo wore the glass hood and wanted to eat, he had to endure the odd taste that came with it.
He collected the item without a change of expression, began to eat, and made small talk with Madame Butterfly.
"Aren’t you going out today?"
"I’m not in the mood," cut Madame Butterfly as she sliced her fried egg. Even with a mask on, she couldn’t hide the fact that she was in a bad mood.
Xu Huo tactfully didn’t say much, finished eating, and left in his car.
This time, he used an "Actor’s Mask" to give himself an ordinary face before donning the "Clown Suit" and heading to the area near the Lower City district to sell toys and candy.
During this time, two children’s parents came to "return" their purchases. In the tussle, his headgear was pulled off. He threatened to call the police, and only after extorting a few hundred White Notes from them did he begin to pick up the snacks scattered on the ground.
The boys from the Lower City district, led by a small boy, came over to help. After picking up the snacks, a group of children and Xu Huo sat on the curbside to rest.
As a gesture of thanks, Xu Huo handed out candy to them. The small boy, clutching the candy and deeply troubled, asked, "Why didn’t you hit them back when they hit you?"
"Hitting people costs money," Xu Huo said indifferently, "Besides, they didn’t really hit me."
"So you just let yourself be bullied?" the small boy said angrily. "It was their own kids who bought the candy. How can they ask for a refund after eating it!"
Feeling that angry? Are you reminded of the times your own parents were bullied?" Xu Huo hit the nail on the head.
The small boy’s eyes reddened, "I don’t want to become such a useless adult. Will I no longer be bullied if I go to school?"
"Not necessarily. You might still be bullied even in school, and those who bully you might get bullied by others," Xu Huo unwrapped a lollipop and tossed it into his mouth, "But each additional day you spend at school reduces the number of people who can bully you."
"But you went to school and still get bullied by the same adults," another child with a radish-like head interjected while licking his candy, showing no regard for Xu Huo’s feelings.
"That’s because I read too little and didn’t study well," Xu Huo made up a quick reply.
The small boy clenched his fists, "If I can go to school, I will definitely study hard!"
Xu Huo glanced at him, "You’ll talk about it after you can actually go to school."
The small boy immediately became dejected again. The other children circled around him, "Big brother, don’t go to school. If you do, your dad will beat you again. If you talk about school again, he’ll definitely beat you to death, might even lock you in the cupboard so you can’t come out. Then we won’t be able to play together."
"I want to go to school!" the small boy shouted, "I don’t want to be a useless adult!"
After shouting, he threw the candy down and ran off, with the other children quickly following after him. One of them took two steps, turned back, and snatched the candy in front of Xu Huo forcefully, saying assertively, "You gave it to big brother, now it belongs to big brother!"
Then he too bolted away.
Xu Huo packed up his things and while passing by a small shop, he casually glanced at the middle-aged man with a cap facing the entrance. Then, just as casually, he averted his gaze and walked out of that area.
In the following days, he would move around the outskirts of the Lower City district following a certain pattern, until one day when there were particularly many children playing out in the Lower City district.
