Chapter 394: Chapter 394: Giving You a Nightmare
The beauty spoke, and Duke Tal naturally promised her everything, attentively escorting her back to the castle. He even had some beauty foods delivered to her for before sleep and personally picked a bouquet of flowers for her, to let her fall asleep surrounded by their fragrance at night.
Madame Butterfly rejected his probing, and Duke Tal, paying no heed to Xu Huo standing by his side, stroked his chin and entered the adjacent room. Shortly thereafter, one of the bodyguards left the castle.
Xu Huo’s bedroom was on the third floor; after sending the two of them off, he returned to his own room.
With Mr. Dong there, he of course knew that a bodyguard had left the castle, but the bodyguards around Duke Tal were clearly skilled players; he couldn’t afford to contemplate tracking them.
However, this Madame Butterfly was quite interesting.
"Sir, I’ve found two more of the notebooks you left behind earlier," Mr. Dong entered with the booklets and some food.
"Just put them on the desk," Xu Huo also had a desk in his bedroom.
Mr. Dong did as instructed, and before leaving, he said, "Sir, try to sleep early tonight."
Xu Huo couldn’t help but give him a look, but the other man didn’t say more, gently closing the door as he left.
After a brief pause, Xu Huo opened the Umbrella of Justice on the terrace. Only when it started raining outside did he return to his desk to continue reading He Pu’s notes.
The servants and Mr. Dong went to rest one after another. In the rainy night, lights in the castle gradually went out, and the vast building, apart from a faint light on the third floor, seemed to merge entirely with the darkness of the night.
Time passed, and an unusual feeling enveloped the castle.
Xu Huo, who was reading the notes, stopped and looked out the window, seeing pairs of red lights through the curtains, staring into the room like eyes.
He set aside what he was holding, got up, and went out. As soon as he drew back the window, the red lights outside vanished, and the night wind blew in, causing the hanging sheer curtains and the flowers in the garden below to sway at the same frequency. His gaze shifted downstairs, where Madame Butterfly, who should have been asleep, unexpectedly appeared alone in front of the Labyrinth Garden. She glanced back in his direction before turning and walking into the maze.
After she entered, a glowing butterfly flew out from the trees, fluttering unsteadily up to his window.
With an outstretched hand, he caught the butterfly, and it dissolved into specks of light that disappeared into the air.
There was no other movement in the castle. Xu Huo hesitated only a moment before taking his umbrella and descending the stairs.
The castle now seemed to differ from when Mr. Dong controlled it. Although lights had been left on in the corridors and the first-floor reception hall, the rest of the areas were shrouded in darkness. As one walked by, there would occasionally be a sensation of being watched by something, causing an involuntary shiver down one’s spine.
This sensation was not unfamiliar to Xu Huo. Relying on his memory, he descended the stairs, circled around from the side corridor to the external walkway behind the main building, and passed through the botanical garden toward the Labyrinth Garden.
However, before he could get close, those creatures lurking in the dark scurried out—the ground, tree trunks, and even the branches were teeming with small, thorn-like creatures. They varied slightly in appearance, but each had plenty of legs. Some were harmless, some highly poisonous. They surrounded him for a few seconds before all swarming towards him.
Xu Huo continued without halting, ignoring the spiders that climbed up his trouser legs, and walked straight into the Garden Maze. He bypassed two giant spiders blocking his path, following the maze’s corridors towards the center.
He had entered the maze once before and roughly remembered the layout of the path at the beginning, so he wasn’t stopped by the corridors that had visually changed, quickly finding Madame Butterfly who had entered the Labyrinth Garden.
She stood alone, her light purple silk robe drenched by the rain into spots of darker purple, her beautiful face also bespeckled with water droplets, but she herself didn’t mind these, nor did she care that someone was watching her. Looking up into the sky, she stretched out her hands as if to catch something.
Xu Huo followed her gaze carefully to her hands, and only after several seconds, did he see a pair of translucent wings flapping briefly, but the fleeting image wasn’t complete—a blink later, and there was nothing in her hands again.
"Has your brain undergone a second evolution?" Madame Butterfly said, clapping her hands together as if she were gently slapping the air, yet a wave of invisible force dissipated from them.
Xu Huo knew he wouldn’t see that butterfly again. Holding his umbrella, he faced the woman, "You want to kill me."
"Who let you see it," Madame Butterfly laughed, "I don’t like being spied upon."
"This counts as spying?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow, "In my place, can’t I look at my garden? Perhaps you should consider why you walked right into my field of view."
Madame Butterfly seemed not to want to waste words with him, and with a casual wave, the floral walls on both sides suddenly demonized, the dense and pus-leaking vines crowded towards him in an attack!
This was a Psychic Attack.
Xu Huo didn’t know whether she had reached this level by using a special item, but being in the same illusion, he too could materialize his own Spiritual World.
He raised his hand and attempted to pull in front of him, but it was only on the third try that he managed to open a door before him. Upon stepping through it, he found himself standing behind Madame Butterfly.
Madame Butterfly didn’t turn around, but her body dissolved into countless butterflies. The swarm of butterflies washed over his face and body, and suddenly he felt a hand touch his right arm. The Crimson Sword he had drawn fell to the ground as his hand drooped helplessly.
Xu Huo frowned and immediately swung the umbrella forward with force. The woman hidden within the butterfly swarm took a step back, revealing her figure. She flicked the small folding fan in her hand and his legs became as petrified and stiff as stone.
Seeing him standing immobilized, Madame Butterfly shook her fan, "Are you not leaving?"
"Why would I?" Xu Huo pressed on the handle of the umbrella, and his legs regained sensation. He then threw out the Fair Wallet and the Dual-color Cube, quickly opened a door in front of him, and went directly in front of the woman, reaching for her throat.
However, when he grasped, Madame Butterfly once again dispersed into a swarm of butterflies.
His gaze searched among the chaotic flight of butterflies. With their first encounter, he knew that her Spirit Evolution was stronger than his, so he couldn’t accurately locate her within the illusion she created, but this was a good opportunity.
Trusting his intuition that she was behind him, he swiftly turned and opened a door, grabbing the hand that reached through with force!
Madame Butterfly appeared half-hidden among the swarm of butterflies, but Xu Huo’s left hand lost sensation again in just an instant of contact, she slipped away once more. At the same time, a metallic collar appeared out of nowhere around his neck, the air around him compressed and squeezed inward, bringing a strong sense of suffocation.
Xu Huo moved his limbs, finding that his right hand had regained some strength. He held his palm upward and a stopwatch and pen appeared in his hand.
