Chapter 382: Caught in the Undercurrent
Chapter 382: Chapter 382: Caught in the Undercurrent
The game to hunt the rebels began, and the lighting in this place dimmed again and again until all the lights went out, leaving only a few small candles on the corridor walls that didn’t cast light far. Some of them had even been deliberately snuffed out, so most of the palace was shrouded in darkness.
There were no candles at the corner where Xu Huo was, but there were some on the opposite wall. Under the dim light, the purple eyes beneath the Butterfly Mask seemed to shine, as bright as the stars.
"Your eyes, are they a special ’game effect’?" he asked.
All the other masks covered the whole face, but this woman’s did not. The Butterfly Mask only covered the upper half of her face, and it didn’t mimic an animal’s expression. Her nose and lips were exposed, and she said with a smile, "Haven’t you heard of ’Purple Puppils’? When they want to kill someone, their eyes light up."
Xu Huo admired the pair of beautiful eyes, "I can’t see that you want to kill me."
The woman’s red lips curled up, "It seems you really don’t recognize me. If you are looking for the fleeing fox, he went that way."
Xu Huo glanced in the direction she pointed and when he turned back, the woman had already walked towards the candlelight ahead. Veyson Meni, who had vanished a moment ago, stood under the light, elegantly extending his hand, "Madam, are you satisfied with this introductory gift?"
The Purple-eyed Woman placed her right hand lightly on his palm, and after he kissed the back of her hand, she said, "There are lost lambs everywhere, Mr. Meni has a long way to go."
"Just call me Veyson," Veyson Meni released her hand reluctantly, "This isn’t the best spot to enjoy the view. Please come with me, I have prepared some refreshments for you."
Watching them leave the candlelit area, Xu Huo relit the candlestick in his hand and headed in the direction the woman had indicated.
People occasionally emerged from the darkness in the corridor. Except for two who insisted on harassing him, the others chose to keep a safe distance. However, not everyone was busy with religious activities; some rooms emitted the excited panting of men and women.
A bit of a distance from the grand hall, "corpses" appeared. Several were foxes, their masks thrown aside, people slumped in corners or on the floor.
The game guide stated that if the game was interrupted or if an accident happened, the players would exit the game, but the "corpses" would remain in the game.
Xu Huo approached and examined the "corpses". None of them was the middle-aged man he had encountered before.
So many foxes killed indicated that the players in the game had started to blindly shoot at everyone wearing the same mask.
It was difficult to say if it was a coincidence that Veyson Meni’s first two targets to kill were the same as the ones he had his eyes on.
The middle-aged man was hanging around near the drinks shop. Xu Huo categorized him and the man who chased him the day before as accomplices. These people came after him because he had happened to visit Deng Xuan’s place a few days earlier, and just when he encountered some special situation there, it brought him trouble.
They could very well be with Deng Xuan.
So, why would Veyson Meni want to kill them in a game?
The few people selected for this religious sacrifice obviously had a connection. Veyson Meni had learned about their identities beforehand, so there was no need to startle them here or to use such a complicated hunting mode... Thinking about Black Wolf, who met secretly with the fox, maybe his target wasn’t these people but to lure out others.
"Don’t move!" A fruit knife was snatched from behind and pressed against his neck, and someone pulled him forcefully into the room next door.
Xu Huo dropped the candlestick from his hand and followed obediently into the room, but the moment the door closed, he broke free from the person behind him, seized the fruit knife, and stabbed it into the door panel.
"You know killing someone in the game doesn’t work, don’t you?" He stared at the hyena mask opposite him.
The person behind the mask gasped heavily, "Following me for several days, who exactly are you?"
Xu Huo raised an eyebrow, "Who do you think I am?"
The middle-aged man clenched his fists and rubbed them on his trouser seams while bellowing, "Who are you exactly? Speak up or I won’t be polite!"
"A frightened rabbit, how are you going to be impolite to me?" Xu Huo sat down casually by the sofa and lit a cigarette, "You’re better off figuring out how to escape than wasting your effort on me."
"You think I don’t want to? Unfortunately, Rong Xin has closed the exit channels..." The middle-aged man rubbed his pants faster, the hyena mask’s eyes bulging, "Are you Veyson Meni’s man? Is today’s game set up just to bait us, right?"
The cartoonish sheep mask looked out of place in this setting, but it chuckled, "For just a few of you, why bother with such great effort."
"So it is true..." The middle-aged man’s gaze wandered, "It must have been Zheng An who exposed us, letting Veyson Meni trace back to us. I’ve been saying we should cancel this meet-up..."
He suddenly stopped speaking and charged toward Xu Huo with a menacing look.
The game couldn’t completely emulate the player’s abilities, but there were no issues with physical strength. Xu Huo kicked the man away and shouted sharply, "I am not Veyson Meni’s man!"
The man, having absorbed the kick, was about to punch Xu Huo’s mask, but upon hearing that, he hesitated. Xu Huo seized the opportunity to twist his hand and demanded, "Was it you who betrayed us!"
The middle-aged man was confounded by his combination of moves, "What are you saying?!"
Xu Huo sneered, "If there was no traitor among you, how would Veyson Meni have noticed ahead of time?"
"What are you saying..." The middle-aged man looked utterly confused, "Aren’t you sent by Veyson Meni to watch over me?"
"Watching you is true, but it was to find out who the traitor is." Xu Huo led him to misunderstand, "Someone among you has sided with Veyson Meni!"
"That’s impossible!" the middle-aged man denied, "If we sided with Veyson Meni, why would we be trapped here?"
"When Black Wolf was killed, I knew there was more to it. It would be easy for him to kill you guys; all this running around in the game clearly had a purpose!" Xu Huo pressed his arm down a bit more.
With a pained grunt, the middle-aged man bumped backward and threw a punch to create distance between them, then stared at him saying, "You’re lying, I’ve never seen you before!"
Xu Huo stared back coldly, "Do you think we are all fools!"
Struggling with his expression, the middle-aged man’s lips trembled before he could speak, when suddenly the door handle started turning forcefully with someone shouting outside, "The door’s locked, maybe someone’s hiding in here, let’s break in!"
With a change of expression, the middle-aged man immediately jumped out the window and ran toward the garden without looking back.
Xu Huo followed suit, climbing up to the windowsill. But instead of heading to the garden, he leapt up to the balcony on the second floor, nimbly swinging over the railing and into the room. The people who had rushed into the room below had already spotted the middle-aged man and were rallying even more people to pursue him.
