Chapter 367: Chapter 367 Interrogation under Torture
"Let go!" Xu Huo kicked up with his legs and with a backhand Sword strike, forced the woman who was standing on his back to retreat, only after widening the distance did he rapidly size up the people who had appeared.
The short-haired woman who spoke before was about ten meters away, wearing a uniform with long pants and a short vest on her upper body. Her exposed abdominal muscles were full of power, her hands wrapped in bandages and her wheat-colored skin was covered in sweat, indicating she had been working out prior to this.
Another man wearing a coat was nearby, but his back was to Xu Huo, his attention preoccupied with the faux He Pu controlled by Buzz Cut.
Including the two robots, there were five people present in total. In reality, only two were engaged in combat.
Combining the woman’s earlier words, Xu Huo immediately said, "Are you Enforcement Department players? I’m pursuing a fugitive, and he’s right in front of us!"
"A fugitive?" The woman wiped the sweat from her neck and turned to Buzz Cut, "There’s a layer on his face, wipe it off and see."
Buzz Cut nodded slightly, took out a piece of rubber and, from a distance, wiped it across the faux He Pu’s face where a layer of burnt skin began to peel off.
"It’s Mimic Serpent skin, favored by 42% of fugitives to change their appearances and evade capture," the man with long hair stated after scanning it.
"Since he’s a fugitive, show no mercy. Anyway, he wouldn’t dare run into an instance," instructed the short-haired woman. The man by her side immediately disappeared on the spot and reappeared above the faux He Pu, his foot stepping on a metal cage!
As the faux He Pu looked up, he struck the Tuning Fork in his hand, freeing himself from the invisible force binding him. He then held high the Tuning Fork, and as if it were a conductor’s baton, he traced a harsh sound on it, "I am the world!"
Before he finished speaking, his figure seemed to enlarge several times out of nowhere, mysteriously instilling a sense of majesty that beckoned one to worship.
However, this tactic was of little effect. Mental Interference was weaker on players with stronger self-control, and it was unlikely the three present would be affected, not to mention the robots were completely immune.
The next second, both took out guns and fired. The bullets the size of fingertips had the power equivalent to hand grenades. The faux He Pu, who had just gained a moment to escape, hadn’t yet cleared the metal cage when he was blown back into it, caught perfectly by the cage!
The metal cage was also an artifact; upon landing, hundreds of rays emitted from within, each targeting different acupoints around the faux He Pu’s body!
"Interrogation!" The cloaked man stood atop the cage, pointed with his chin, and the rays lifted the faux He Pu off the ground and promptly stabbed into his flesh.
The faux He Pu struggled for only a moment before he hung limp inside the cage, his eyes gradually losing focus.
Affected by the tool, Xu Huo couldn’t hear what the cloaked man asked from his location. But He Pu was also a player with a specialty in mental abilities. That he was so easily captured and interrogated by the artifact, and the use of equipment to negate Spatial Artifacts, showed that in Zone 011, whether players or public weapons, the level of evolution had reached a certain degree.
He had just taken a step forward when the woman in front suddenly turned back, "It seems you weren’t affected at all, is your specialty mental?"
The faux He Pu’s attack was more mental-based. If one’s mental defense was strong, it could turn the tables. Not to the point of a counter-kill, but it would be no issue to hold out for a few rounds.
Xu Huo sheathed his Sword and gave her a glance, "I’m the one who held this fugitive back. In Zone 011, there are laws stating that any person who reports, captures, or kills a fugitive—be they ordinary people, Evolvers, or players—can receive government rewards."
"Since you’ve already caught him, I believe there’s nothing left for me to do here. Can I go now?"
Reporting a fugitive to the government involves a different set of procedures, which don’t conflict with the game’s settlement, but since Xu Huo didn’t capture the faux He Pu himself, there was no need to squabble over trifles.
The short-haired woman gave him a once over, "Just wait here."
Then she turned and called out, "Cheng Bing!"
The two robot officers quickly converged. The short-haired woman asked, "What charge can I use to prosecute him?"
Xu Huo’s action of wiping his face paused.
The female robot officer responded, "The crime of endangering public safety."
The charge of endangering public safety in Zone 011 is different from that in Zone 014. The punishment is only equivalent to littering—just a fine, with no need for detention. Paying on the spot and walking away is no problem.
"How can it be like this?" The short-haired woman gripped the female robot officer’s hand. "He fought all the way to the doorstep of the Enforcement Department. Can’t this count as a terrorist attack?"
The female robot officer, with a cold expression but a humanlike tone, said, "Captain, it happened just outside the Enforcement Department, not inside. Besides, there are law enforcement recorders nearby; the whole process was recorded. He explained from the start that he was pursuing a fugitive."
The world of players is treated with more legal leniency across all standards, or else the prisons would have been overwhelmed long ago, particularly with players. Zone 011 has always adopted a lenient policy, because players who get tickets can leave at any time, making sentencing and imprisonment somewhat pointless.
Xu Huo didn’t want to entangle with them and even took out a stack of money.
Seeing that he was about to leave, the short-haired woman reached out and pressed down on his shoulder, "Wait a moment. Do you want to reside long-term in Zone 011? You don’t have any identity proof, right?"
"Let me tell you, whether you want to rent, buy a house, or engage in other social activities in New City District, it won’t work without a player identity proof issued by the government. Also, you need identity proof to go to other zones."
This statement successfully piqued Xu Huo’s interest; he turned around and smiled at the woman, "Can you handle identity proofs?"
"Of course, I can..." The short-haired woman’s words were cut off as a hand covered her mouth; it was the male robot officer. Buzz Cut approached Xu Huo, showing his credentials, "I’m Guo Yingguang from the Enforcement Department. It’s not easy for foreign players to obtain identity proofs, but since you reported a fugitive, that counts as a meritorious deed. The Enforcement Department can apply for you specially. There’s more we need to verify about that fugitive. Please cooperate with us."
With matters having reached this point, could Xu Huo object?
He also didn’t have another Spatial Teleportation Device to leave the place.
The short-haired woman’s interest in him was obvious. After he agreed, she came right over, put her arm around his shoulder, and said with a beaming smile, "What’s this? You’ve just come out of an instance and haven’t found a place to stay, right? Do you want to go to my place... or the hotel next door?"
The faux He Pu was taken into the Enforcement Department by the man in the cape. Buzz Cut and the male robot officer went together, leaving the female robot officer and the short-haired woman to accompany Xu Huo to the hotel.
"The area around the Enforcement Department is all under lockdown, with no resident or access. You can’t even hail a cab. I’ll take you there." The short-haired woman arrived in a silver sports car, enthusiastically opening the door for Xu Huo.
