Chapter 335: Highly Playerized City
Chapter 335: Chapter 335: Highly Playerized City
People certainly walked on the ground, but every now and then, with a whoosh of air under their feet, they took flight, and robots were visible everywhere.
Maintaining road cleanliness, greeting customers inside and outside stores, offering directions at transport hubs... The electronic screens on the elliptical ships flying overhead were displaying recruitment notices:
"Rongxin Group is now offering high salaries for the recruitment of artistic professional players, models, singers, and performing artists. Upon successful application, our company will provide safe tickets to the newcomers."
Walking forward two steps, the public holographic projection showed a good-looking woman in a nurse’s uniform, smiling sweetly, "Quanjiafu Pharmaceutical Company urgently solicits volunteer newcomers to participate in new drug trials, with registration providing a chance to obtain the latest Evolution Potion developed by Stellar Pharmaceutical Research Group."
A little further ahead was a boldly advertised trade hub for props, but the electronic screens only showed household items, which many housewives were busy browsing through.
"Are your eyes seeing things?" Someone snuck up cheekily from behind at that moment.
Xu Huo turned to glance at him, "Did you buy those props from here?"
Skinny Monkey smiled and gave a thumbs up, "I knew I couldn’t hide it from brother’s eyes; you’re more skilled than the other players on the bus. Cough, I greatly respect the strong, and that’s why I want to be your friend."
Xu Huo continued walking forward, "No time."
"There’s plenty of time, I’ll talk as you walk. If you like what you hear, listen; if not, just ignore me," Skinny Monkey followed him, grinning, "Don’t be fooled by the prosperity here; it’s all superficial. A newcomer can easily get taken advantage of."
"Although I wasn’t born at this station, it is no different from my second home. Whether you want to buy Potions or trade props, you need to understand the market dynamics."
"There is an official market in the city, but you won’t find many practical props or Potions there, plus there’s the danger of being targeted by the government. I know some places that can get hold of stuff with some serious firepower—depends on whether you need it, brother."
While speaking, he watched Xu Huo’s expression closely and, upon seeing his indifference, switched gears, "Of course, you’re so strong you probably don’t need props or Potions. I can tell your evolution rate isn’t that high; it doesn’t quite match a Level D Player. You must have traded all your Potions for props."
"Honestly speaking, you’re digging your own grave. When it comes to crunch time, a strong physique is what matters. Props are secondary; in some stations with advanced technology, props don’t have much use."
No sooner had he finished speaking than numerous virtual screens projected throughout the city, displaying a 3D projection of a person marked as "Extremely Dangerous" at the top, along with a color-coded danger level map ranging from green, to yellow, to red, accompanied by an announcement:
"Attention, city residents: A wanted Player is fleeing from Taitaile Road toward Wangguan Road, and the patrol team is in pursuit!"
The alarm sound got closer and closer. Xu Huo looked up and saw a car swerving out from the end of the street corner, swiftly and deftly avoiding the bombardment from behind. However, the pursuit wasn’t limited to the three cars behind it; another four flying devices appeared from the left and right, firing several bombs, one of which hit the car in flight, disrupting the controls with an electrical charge, and the car uncontrollably plunged toward the ground.
The duty robots, not far off, rushed from different directions to intercept the careening car, successfully blocking it. One of them yanked the car door open to grab the slumped, seemingly unconscious person inside. However, before it could touch them, it froze in place, malfunctioning and repeating the motion of reaching for the person.
The player inside took the opportunity to escape. With a flash, they broke out of the encirclement and suddenly appeared a hundred meters away, clearly having relied on the power of a prop to escape.
The force set up for the capture all converged on the accident site, and it seemed that the wanted player had successfully escaped, but Xu Huo felt an unusual energy fluctuation directly ahead of him. Sure enough, as soon as he charged into it, an invisible net immediately wrapped around him, and the small flying device pulling the net revealed its trail, swirling around to inject a potion. The player who was struggling in the net a second ago instantly passed out and was quickly taken away by the flying device.
"Alert canceled! Residents may move about normally!"
"Alert canceled! Residents may move about normally!"
Skinny Monkey watched with interest, even clapping along with the city’s residents, and couldn’t help but exclaim, "This is the power of technology, lower-level players can only be so humble now."
Xu Huo didn’t think there was anything surprising about this swift capture, not even in his home in Zone 014, where well-trained special forces could accomplish such coordination. It would have been strange if this technologically advanced city couldn’t do the same.
Robots had begun cleaning up the scene of the car accident, and Skinny Monkey turned back to him and said, "If you hadn’t acted yesterday, that Butcher Carriage Monster might have targeted me. I’ll always remember this favor, Deng Xuan."
It wasn’t until Deng Xuan spoke that Xu Huo’s expression showed the slightest change. He said, "You didn’t know about the Butcher Carriage Monster, did you?"
"I didn’t know, indeed," Deng Xuan said with a smile, "But seeing the folks from the... Orbital Supply Department, I understood. The guy with the briefcase is mostly likely from the Holy Sword Society’s daredevil team. I thought there was something valuable inside that case."
"Holy Sword Society?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow.
"Brother, you’ve heard of the Holy Sword Society?" Deng Xuan was surprised, "Didn’t expect you to be so well-informed. The Holy Sword Society and the Game Government have always been at odds; fights are common. People often stir trouble on the trains, but I couldn’t imagine they would bring an Alien to butcher the car."
"I bet that little Alien was their doing too, even trapping all the players in the car, absolutely heartless!"
Whether the man with the briefcase from yesterday belonged to the Holy Sword Society was unclear, but he clearly harbored deep resentment towards the Orbital Supply Department, and must be a player against the Game Government.
The game world had a complete social system, something Xu Huo had known since he entered the game. The game controlled the players’ most important resources - even Potions as crucial to a player’s life as the Evolution Potion were likely tampered with. It wasn’t surprising that there were player organizations resisting.
Seeing him ready to take a ride, Deng Xuan quickly said, "Why the rush? It’s not too late to enter an instance after preparing more thoroughly."
"Let me take you to a nice place for a meal, how about we talk while we eat?"
Xu Huo’s gaze lingered on his face, "Your friend was killed, don’t you have to take care of the aftermath?"
The smile on Deng Xuan’s face stiffened, and then he rubbed his chest, "You saw through it, huh? Actually, he wasn’t really a friend, just a business partner."
"How about this," Xu Huo said, "If you have flammable material that can be taken into an instance, I’m willing to buy it at a high price."
