Chapter 316: Chapter 316 The Result of Evolution

"Xu Huo, you’re awake!" Yan Jiayu came over happily, "How do you feel? Can you see through people’s skin and see their veins? Wait a second!"

She turned her back, made a fist, then stretched out her hand, "Guess what I’m holding in my hand?"

"Roasted melon seeds." Xu Huo pushed the Girl in the painting’s hand away, looked around the warehouse, where Professor Lan, Tang Guangbo, and others were present, and there were more people outside the door; Yuan Yao was not among them.

"You really can see through things!" Yan Jiayu looked at him in shock, "Professor Lan was right!"

Xu Huo looked at the few medical workers holding notebooks who were slightly excited, "I’m sorry, but I can’t see through things."

"What about hypnosis? Mind control?" a doctor asked.

"Don’t have those either." Xu Huo shook his head, "All the superpower phenomena you think occur in sci-fi movies did not happen."

"Ah?" Yan Jiayu visibly became disappointed, "I thought you could see through my hand."

Xu Huo let out a laugh, "Roasted melon seeds have a smell."

"That’s true." Yan Jiayu put the thing in her hand back into her small pocket and asked again, "Do you feel anything physically?"

"Tired." Xu Huo rubbed his temples.

"The external symptoms have noticeably lessened," Professor Lan observed him, "Your condition is largely normal now, but just to be safe, it’s best to have a check-up."

Xu Huo also wanted to see the changes in his brain before and after, so he cooperated with the examination. Two hours later, Professor Lan and the others held the report with a mix of disappointment and a sense of inevitability.

What they were most concerned about, the EEG, showed that his brain activity only ranked in the top five among the player community, and while he also passed the test questions set by the panel of experts, he was not extraordinary.

"Generally, players with a higher degree of brain evolution exhibit phenomena like hyperthymesia, accelerated computation, increased IQ, the ability to efficiently learn different languages, work across fields, and a better grasp of others’ emotional states. These are all very obvious signs. Xu Huo’s situation is different," a doctor told Professor Lan: "He too showed improved memory and increased response times, but not to the level of those players from Jing City. Besides, he was already smarter than the average person, so this evolution hasn’t led to any substantial leap."

The people present were quite disappointed, but Professor Lan said, "I don’t think so. You’ve forgotten what happened in the isolation ward, when other players were present, but only he detected the truck outside the wall in advance. I’ve already asked the players from the Special Defense Department; that truck appeared out of thin air, most likely due to a special attribute or the power of an item, undetectable to other players. How did he know about it?"

"This exactly represents the leap of brain evolution, breaking free from the inherent human understanding of brain development. He was able to perceive the fluctuations in space even when he could not see or hear, even penetrating through what we perceive as solid matter—that wall."

"How did he do it?" someone finally murmured after a pause.

Professor Lan shook his head slightly, "Assuming my speculation is correct, Xu Huo’s evolution has already surpassed the current level of human understanding, and we wouldn’t even know where to begin to study it."

All they could do was deconstruct the human brain from a biological standpoint; this kind of mutation was something they had never touched upon.

"It’s a shame we can’t make a phone call out; otherwise, we could immediately start discussions with Jing City," another professor said.

Professor Lan waved his hand, "We need his cooperation for that as well."

Did Xu Huo really not know the changes in his body? He just didn’t want to say it.

In the next room, Xu Huo was talking with Yan Jiayu.

"I’m not clear on what exactly happened either, but after the power outage, many people disappeared, Yuan Yao, the doctors in the hospital, and most of the people from the Special Defense Department." Yan Jiayu said.

Xu Huo looked outside the window; in Chief Wu’s case, those who disappeared were them, but on their side, it was inexplicably Chief Wu and the others who vanished.

"Feeling any steadier?" Tang Guangbo came in from outside, smiling as he handed him a glass of water, "The hospital’s water dispenser is broken, only cold water is available."

Xu Huo held the cup, "If the hospital’s major medical equipment is functional, how can the water dispenser be broken?"

Before the power outage, a doctor had made tea.

"That’s hard to say, the more inconspicuous things are, the easier they break," Tang Guangbo said.

"Five water dispensers on the same floor broke all at once?" Xu Huo looked up at him, "Could it be because some physical objects didn’t cross the space to get here?"

Tang Guangbo said in surprise, "What do you mean by crossing space?"

Xu Huo narrowed his eyes, seriously scrutinizing the middle-aged man. Back in Jing City, he had suspected that he was a player. Tang Guangbo, who repeatedly performed the same actions in Mist Area Hospital, was actually a suggestion implanted in his own memory. The earliest he regained consciousness was upon hearing Tang Guangbo speak.

"Actually, you don’t need to be so hostile towards me," Tang Guangbo said, "I’m here not only at the request of the Special Defense Department but also because of your mother. She’s very concerned about you; I want to make her happy, so naturally, I’ll bear goodwill towards you."

"Professor Tang?" A nurse pushed the door open, "Professor Lan would like a word with you."

Tang Guangbo straightened his coat and left.

Xu Huo stared at his retreating figure, his eyes brimming with killing intent.

"Hey." Yan Jiayu nudged him.

Only then did Xu Huo regain his composure and turned to her, saying, "Thanks for this time, I know it was you who stopped those doctors."

"We’re friends," Yan Jiayu said with a shy smile, "Friends should help each other out. I help you now; you’ll help me later."

"And me, I’m also a friend." The girl in the painting propped up her phone.

Afterwards, Professor Lan, Tang Guangbo, and others did not come back to the ward. About half an hour later, as the sky gradually brightened, it became noisy outside.

"The Special Defense Department people are back," Yan Jiayu said, standing by the window looking out.

Xu Huo closed his eyes momentarily, and indeed, after the medium vanished, he couldn’t use his psychic power at will. However, as Professor Lan had said, he had undergone a qualitative change in his perception. Even from his room, he could clearly catch the movements of people outside.

"They’re back," he said, looking toward the door. The next second, Yuan Yao pushed the door open, followed by Zhou Ning and four others.

Apart from Shen Xin, the others were acquainted with Yan Jiayu. After introductions by Yuan Yao, he said, "I was worried Brother Xu might have gone cold just now. Is that a new trait? Coming without a shadow, going without a trace, not even a sound, more impressive than my ’hide and seek’."

Seeing no one was injured, Xu Huo replied, "No traces left behind, right?"

"Don’t worry," Zhou Ning said softly.

Let’s not mention Dai Wenqian for now; those players were from the Special Defense Department and couldn’t be dealt with openly.

With the affair in Hua City concluded, Xu Huo also planned to return to Ting City.

"So eager to leave?" Chief Wu and Chief Song, along with several others, walked in. Chief Song glanced at the others and said with hidden meaning, "Xu Huo, you do have quite a few friends."
