Chapter 302: Chapter 302: Four Types of Personality
Xu Huo came to this Underground Round Tower for the third time.
This time, the rotating stair didn’t revert to its condition from the first two descents; instead, it remained as he had left it, curving down the white steps to the bottom of the tower where the round table was already placed at the center. Three black shadows sat in their original positions, and he walked over to sit in his own seat.
After a moment of silence, the four stretched out their hands simultaneously. Xu Huo flipped open the White Shelled Book in front of him, while the other three shadows turned over a deck of cards, gripped a dagger, and pressed down on a black thin slice, respectively.
White, orange, red, and black colors spread out rapidly, covering the table and following the legs of the table to the floor. After swallowing the ground, they spiraled upwards along the tower, mixing at times, separating at others. Each color fought to take over more of the tower’s surface area.
Soon, black and white gained the upper hand. Orange and red were squeezed out and stopped in their current positions, leaving black and white to contend for dominance. After consuming the entire tower, the black color then began to cover the white.
As the area of white reduced, it was suppressed along with orange and red by the black color, and all three were pushed back down to the base of the tower. Simultaneously, changes were also happening inside the tower.
The round table deconstructed, splitting into four parts, but the section occupied by the black thin slice kept growing and extending, soon overtaking the overall area of the round table. The rotating stair, initially white, gradually darkened as thorns and spikes sprouted from its steps. These thorns extended toward the surrounding walls of the tower, and countless black stone cones grew within the tower’s interior. The cones connected with the spikes, and gradually even the space was invaded by black!
The tower started to shake, and black cracks appeared on the White Shelled Book in front of Xu Huo—his own Spiritual World was being invaded by another personality!
Frowning, he turned a page of the book, and white color flowed out again. After the cracks on the cover were mended, the white area inside the tower immediately stopped shrinking, reclaiming the territory invaded by black along with orange and red.
The rotating stair turned back to white, the thorns and tower wall cones disintegrated into pieces and vanished. With the clear hues once again dominating the entire tower, the fragmented round table also reassembled.
The four once again sat together, and the colors returned to the objects themselves on the table.
Xu Huo closed the book and looked to his left, where the shadow by the deck of cards gradually took on color, transforming into a child version of himself. Then he looked across, where the shadow by the dagger turned into a younger version of himself, just slightly younger in age. As for the shadow on his right holding the black thin slice, it shrunk down to a height of one meter, still retaining its black shadowy state without a face.
All three persons beside the round table directed their gaze at the shadowy figure, but the childlike shadow picked up the black thin slice, jumped down from its chair, and started to run up the tower.
Xu Huo raised his hand, and the interior of the tower instantly transformed into a triangle. The three walls quickly closed in towards the middle, driving the shadow back.
The interior of the tower consisted of a triangle occupied by Xu Huo himself and his younger and childlike personalities. The shadow had no escape and was forced to return to the side of the round table.
Tapping on the table surface, Xu Huo indicated for him to put down the black thin slice.
The shadow turned its head to look at him. The black, dimly lit mass of its head could not express any emotion, but the continuously expanding black mist symbolized his feelings.
The young version of Xu Huo stood up, grabbed the nape of the shadow’s neck, and pressed it down onto the table, at which the shadow obediently released its grip.
As the triangular tower retreated back into a cylindrical shape, the black thin slice floated to the center of the table;
Hundreds of floors moved as fragments, forming a new curved bookshelf that concealed the empty circular corridors after which the deck of cards was placed on top of the thin slice;
The bookshelves pulled apart, and one by one, doors formed gaps in sequence, with the dagger stacked on top of the deck of cards;
As the doors of dozens of rooms on each floor were closed one by one, Xu Huo’s White Shelled Book was placed on top of the dagger, suppressing the black thin slice as well as the other two objects symbolizing personalities.
By this point, he had temporarily completed his control over the other three personalities and also his control over his own spiritual world.
"Click!" With the sound of a door opening, the teenage version of Xu Huo appeared on the fourth floor and walked into one of the doors.
Next came his younger self, who vanished into a door on the twenty-third floor.
As for the child version of the shadow, the other two personalities disappeared while this one also hid itself inside the round tower.
The spiral staircase grew from the base to Xu Huo’s feet, then he ascended towards the top, and upon returning to the top of the round tower, a door appeared before him. He turned the doorknob to go out, and at first, there was darkness, but then everything returned to normal.
Opening his eyes, he found himself in a dilapidated building with Yan Jiayu lying beside him, breathing evenly, appearing as if she were asleep.
Calling her name twice didn’t wake her, so he stepped out of the building. Not far away was the wall they had climbed over. There was no sign of the Alien that had chased them. At a glance, the area looked more like an abandoned city.
Before walking far, he discovered Sima Xiao’er and others in a nearby building, each of them lying haphazardly on the ground, but Nie Xuan was not among these people.
Besides them, there were some people he had never seen before, and it was unclear whether they were part of the Special Defense Department.
He slapped each person like he did with Yan Jiayu, to no avail. They simply couldn’t be awoken. But then again, they were not fainting, but trapped within their own spiritual world. Until they realized they were trapped in an illusion and then took control of their own spiritual world, waking them might just lead to madness.
Xu Huo moved Yan Jiayu next to Sima Xiao’er and then took out the "Awakening Doll," tapping its head, "Need to speak with you."
The doll’s eyes lit up, and immediately a hand reached out from within. He quickly grabbed the hand, "Come out, let’s talk."
"You don’t have any candy!" a shrill voice came from inside the doll, "Liar!"
"I got trapped as soon as I left the instance; you’ll have to wait until I’m alive and out to get your candy," Xu Huo said without letting go. "I’ll give you double the candy next month, no problem, right?"
The struggling hand stopped, and then a little girl wearing a pink hat jumped out of the doll. As soon as she landed, she pulled a face and turned to go back.
Xu Huo held her shoulder, "You’re already here."
The girl struggled and complained, "All you adults are liars. You promised me candy if I came out, but you tricked me into this unstable space!"
"I didn’t lie to you, I was trapped," Xu Huo cut straight to the point. "What do you mean by ’unstable space’?"
"So many wormhole points, what’s a few unstable spaces?" The girl looked around and said, "This should be war ruins. The space hasn’t completely shattered, so it drifts between different worlds."
"What kind of war can damage a space?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow.
"Obviously, a player war," the girl looked back at him. "You’re a player from Zone 014, don’t you know?"
