Chapter 201: Chapter 201: Returning to the Elevator on the Fifteenth Floor
This undoubtedly also increased the risk for the players.
"I don’t agree with splitting up into more elevators," Wei Bin said, "Our purpose is to save more people, not to test the limits of the instance’s rules. As long as we stay within the safety line, whether we understand some of the other rules or not is not important."
Just like Dai Wenqian said about dispersing the number of people, in fact, there’s no need to do so. As long as there are nine elevators left after this descent, it’s basically certain that the number of safe elevators corresponds to the number of floors. Dispersing the number of people is just an unnecessary extra step.
"How can you be sure it’s not random with the floors?" Dai Wenqian still maintained a gentle smile, "Maybe we were just lucky in the previous floors."
"But if every floor down we randomly lose one elevator’s worth of people, doesn’t that mean the risk spread across each person is smaller?"
"If we don’t try, then on every subsequent floor we can only squeeze into the elevators as much as possible. Even if the frequency of randomness is not that high, once it hits, at least thirteen people will be lost."
"But what if we’re lucky and don’t get picked?" Xiao Ba said.
Dai Wenqian lifted his glasses, "It’s never wrong to prepare for the worst."
Although Gu Yu and the others did not agree with his method of testing the rules with human lives, it was indeed a method. The sooner they understood the rules, the safer it would be for them.
"Then how many people per elevator?" Zhang Biao tentatively asked, "Do you have a plan? Is it safer with more or fewer people?"
Dai Wenqian gestured to Xu Huo with a hand inviting him to speak.
"It doesn’t matter how many, as long as it’s no more than thirteen people," Xu Huo said.
"However, to be cautious, one of the additional elevators should have fewer than five people, and another fewer than ten," Dai Wenqian added.
The other players had no objections, and the thoughts of the people outside were not within their consideration.
The six hours on the tenth floor passed quickly, and as usual, everyone entered the elevator. However, this time the players dispersed and entered six different elevators. Xu Huo, along with the cart he brought, only had Da Zhi, Jiang Yihua, and three ordinary people with him. There were also two other elevators with fewer people, and the one with fewer than five people included Gu Yu and Wei Bin.
The moment the elevator doors closed, Xu Huo knew that the elevator he was in had triggered a rule trap, because the elevator was not descending but instead sharply accelerated upwards!
"Be careful!" he warned Jiang Yihua and the others, steadying the cart with one foot while leaning against the elevator with his back.
Seeing this, the others also clung tightly to the walls of the elevator, bracing themselves with hands behind and knees bent in anticipation of impact.
In the blink of an eye, the elevator rushed back to the fifteenth floor, but when the elevator stopped, the doors did not open. Instead, the roof of the elevator car opened to the left and right.
The lights for illumination went out, and Jiang Yihua quickly turned on her phone flashlight, shining it toward the elevator shaft’s top part, just three meters away from them.
"It seems like something is coming from the side!" she said in a hushed and anxious breath.
Xu Huo also heard noises coming from the side duct and smelled a strong odor.
"Cover your mouth and nose," he instructed the others.
Jiang Yihua and the others were sweating nervously, their eyes wide as they stared upward. However, just as the rustling sounds reached the edge of the elevator, making it feel like something was about to cross over the car, the noise suddenly stopped!
A few seconds later, the elevator top closed, the lights came back on, and the elevator dropped sharply to the ninth floor.
"Ding!" As soon as the elevator doors opened, Jiang Yihua rushed out impatiently, only to be frightened back by the sudden appearance of several skeletons in front of her, nearly bumping into Da Zhi and the others as they exited behind her.
In another elevator, Dai Wenqian and his group had also emerged.
Seeing Xu Huo’s group exiting the elevator in panic, scrambling to their feet, Dai Wenqian evaluated Xu Huo with a serious expression, "You win this round."
Xu Huo looked back at the other elevators and noticed that the people from two of them were missing.
One of the elevators without any players accompanying had, just like the fifteen people who came down from the fifteenth floor, left no trace inside, but the other elevator that had carried nine people, including one player, was now missing all occupants. Inside it were signs of a struggle and a few fresh bloodstains.
"What is that?" Gu Yu pointed at a spot of greenish-yellow mucus-like substance in the corner of the elevator.
"It must be something left behind when Wang Cheng was attacked," Zheng Liang said with a somber face. "We’ve lost another player!"
Dai Wenqian looked at Xu Huo, "What did you encounter in the elevator?"
"Didn’t see anything," Xu Huo said. "Right after the elevator started, we were taken to the fifteenth floor. The top of the elevator could be opened to the left and right, and it seems there might be other connections above the elevator shaft, possibly with more alien species lurking."
The elevator doors slowly closed as he stared at the mucus in the corner, then said after a moment, "However, it didn’t show itself and the top closed again, and the elevator went straight to the ninth floor."
"Just like that?" Zheng Liang asked incredulously. "You weren’t attacked?"
"Can’t you understand human speech?" Jiang Yihua, still shaken, said, "We were attacked just the same, we just didn’t come face to face with the Alien!"
"That Alien must be very strong; I have a feeling!"
She was still being supported by Da Zhi at the time.
"I don’t understand, what you’re saying is, you were taken to the fifteenth floor, but for some reason, the Alien didn’t attack you?"
Before Wei Bin could finish speaking, Xu Huo and Dai Wenqian’s gazes simultaneously turned to the mutated plant in the cart.
Three elevators should have been taken up, and the occupants of two of them disappeared, leaving only a few signs of a struggle by one of the players. The elevators that lost people opened more or less simultaneously, meaning the time taken to go up and come back down was very short.
In such a short span, the players could have been killed or abducted, but either scenario suggests the encounter left them virtually powerless to fight back.
In the face of such an overwhelming disparity in strength, Xu Huo’s group managed to return unscathed, the only difference being the mutated plant they brought from the thirteenth floor.
"Is there an Alien killing people in the elevator?" asked the rich young lady, her voice trembling, "Has someone been murdered? Did you know about this earlier?"
Xu Huo shifted his gaze away, then turned back to look at the people crowded around him, "Let’s first check the ninth floor."
Suppressing the questions in their hearts, the players began checking everything floor by floor.
The ninth floor was a specimen floor, and the skeletons that Jiang Yihua had run into were human bone specimens, hung carelessly on the outside of a box wrapped in iron sheets, with many more such boxes around.
"Thud, thud." Zheng tapped on an iron box and then listened for a few seconds, "There seems to be water inside."
"Maybe it’s preserving some kind of specimen," Gu Yu observed, looking around, then added, "This floor should be safe too."
