Chapter 193: The Special Thirteenth Floor
Chapter 193: Chapter 193: The Special Thirteenth Floor
The two players following Dai Wenqian did as he said, one putting the flashlight inside the gap, while the other aimed the camera to shoot through the crack. But the moment the phone touched the elevator door, an abrupt change occurred: a shadow, quick as lightning, flashed past the gap, followed by blood splattering out. The phone was sliced in two, and the player holding it had half their palm and head sheared off!
"Ah!!" Everyone scrambled backward, tumbling and crawling, with the nearest players promptly closing the elevator door.
There was no sound from the elevator shaft; the incident was so swift that the naked eye could barely catch it, but the body of their companion lay there, making the faces of Dai Wenqian and the others quite grim.
Less than ten hours into this instance, they had lost four players.
"That must have been a mutated animal just now," Zheng Liang said. "We need to think of another way; we can’t keep letting the game lead us by the nose."
"Do we really have to go down?" Brother Tie stroked the wound on his face from a Man-Eating Flower bite, "If we stay on the fifteenth floor, there may be no danger at all."
Dai Wenqian didn’t even spare him a glance; he looked at the already dead comrade on the floor and said coldly, "The mutated animal that killed Wu Kun couldn’t possibly just stay in the elevator shaft; otherwise, going up and down, they would have died a long time ago."
"He’s right," Wei Bin, who also wore glasses, analyzed. "No one can guarantee that those elevator doors won’t open and release the mutated animals. If we stay on the fourteenth floor, there’s no telling what other dangers might arise."
"I think you all are just overthinking it," Zhang Biao said. "If those things could move freely throughout the building, they would have appeared on the fifteenth floor when we arrived; if they didn’t, they’re definitely confined."
Some people agreed with his statement and suggested they should stay on the fourteenth floor.
Gu Yu couldn’t unify the two opinions, and the other twelve players were divided.
Dai Wenqian, Wei Bin, Xiao Ba, and three others planned to continue downward, while Zheng Liang, Zhang Biao, Brother Tie, and three others wanted to stay on the fourteenth floor.
"Gu Yu, think it through: the windows on the fourteenth floor are sealed; staying here is still relatively safe," Zhang Biao said. "If you go down, who knows what’s on the thirteenth floor."
Gu Yu hesitated, stealing a glance at Xu Huo; she noticed he seemed oblivious to the conversation, watching the elevator. After a pause, she said, "I’ll go with Dai Wenqian and the others."
Once she spoke, Zheng Liang seemed less certain than before, turning with a dark expression to shout at Xu Huo, "Hey! Are you going down or not?"
Xu Huo turned back to look at him and replied, "Of course I’m going down."
Zheng Liang appeared somewhat reluctant but after two seconds, also sided with Gu Yu and Dai Wenqian.
Zhang Biao and Brother Tie’s side was left with only five players. As most were opting to move to the thirteenth floor, the non-player individuals also chose the side with more people.
Zhang Biao and Brother Tie exchanged looks and leaned to the side without speaking.
"Squeak squeak..." The friction sound rang out again inside the elevator, and all fifteen elevators opened simultaneously, an electronic alarm blaring: "Xiaohua Honghong Fourteenth Floor will close shortly, please proceed to the thirteenth floor."
"Don’t let more than thirteen people into each elevator," Xu Huo reminded everyone before stepping in first, followed closely by the flower-selling girl and her companion, Kang Hong, the tall woman, and others.
Gu Yu, Dai Wenqian, and the others followed suit, and after a while of standoff, Zhang Biao and Brother Tie’s group ultimately chose to enter the elevator as well.
"Ding!" When the elevator reached the thirteenth floor, everyone tensed, fearing the same incident as on the fourteenth floor. However, when the elevator doors opened, the thirteenth floor seemed more peaceful than expected.
The few light tubes that hadn’t broken were still lit, the illumination wasn’t bright enough, but it was sufficient to make out the layout of the floor.
This level was a plant cultivation room.
Directly opposite the elevator was a row of glass rooms, from outside of which it was clear to see the crops being grown. In the room directly facing Xu Huo was a type of small potted plant crop, unlike common flowers in the real world. This plant looked a bit like a miniature sunflower; however, the flower head was completely covered with dense, small flowers, the color of which changed with the observer’s viewing angle.
He walked over and picked up the logbook hanging beside the door, flipping it open to read the contents.
"Ultra-miniature Carnivorous Flower, capable of displaying up to thirteen colors on a single flower. Usually appears blue from the front and brown from the side. Its color has a temperature difference, adding to its deceptiveness."
Scattered in the back were some notes about plant discoveries. It seemed the research base was trying to study a method of changing temperatures from this plant, and on the back cover of the logbook was the sponsor’s mark of a certain military ordinance organization.
"Buzzing Flower?" In the adjacent glass room, the flower girl was looking at a flower that resembled a bee. She curiously lifted her head from the information, "Do these really make a buzzing sound just like a bee’s when touched?"
The burly man beside her hurriedly stopped her, "Don’t touch them, whatever you do!"
Before he could finish, a clatter sounded from not far away where someone accidentally kicked over a potted plant placed next to the hallway.
The person who knocked over the object tripped and fell to the ground. Before they could say anything, they saw deep blue powder sprayed from the leaves of the plant, the powder quickly adhering to their calf and rapidly eating through their skin!
The person screamed in pain, as the place that came into contact with the powder not only started to decay rapidly, but the surrounding blood vessels also gradually turned blue and quickly crept up towards their torso.
The people around retreated in horror, not daring to approach the poisoned individual or the plant on the floor, watching helplessly as he convulsed on the ground for half a minute before he stopped breathing.
Dai Wenqian picked up a logbook from the wall, flipped through it a few times, then said, "This plant sprays poison powder when attacked. You won’t be affected as long as you don’t come into contact with the powder."
"There are traps all over this damn place!" Brother Tie scratched his face.
Wei Bin gave him a look, "You’re bleeding on your face, stop scratching."
Brother Tie didn’t stop, "You think I want to? It itches where the wound is!"
Dai Wenqian furrowed his brow subconsciously, immediately saying, "Let’s see if there are any plants nearby that carry their own poison gas."
Now everyone’s complexion changed, and Gu Yu and the other players immediately started to check each glass room. Not all the glass rooms had logbooks, and out of the eighteen rooms on the thirteenth floor, seven of them had no logbooks.
Not only that, the thirteenth floor was enclosed, and with different temperatures in each glass room, the outside also felt somewhat stuffy and hot.
"There’s a ventilation device here!" The flower girl found a gate mechanism at the end of the right side, she forcefully pulled it down, and more than a dozen rectangular trapdoors popped open on the ceiling of the floor. The fans inside started to turn, and the stifling air inside the room reduced significantly.
Only when Brother Tie stopped scratching his face vigorously did everyone breathe a small sigh of relief.
"Look around some more," Gu Yu said to the others. The most crucial thing they lacked now was information about this building.
