Chapter 181: Chapter 181 Real Combat Training
The Girl in the painting stayed a few more days in Sea City before making her way to Jing City, and she directly sought out Xu Family’s address given by Xu Huo.
Before her arrival, Xu Huo had already arranged an identity for her, which was the same as he had told Yuan Yao and others earlier, that she was a distant relative from Lady Fang’s side with vague parental names, and could roughly be considered a cousin.
When the Girl in the painting arrived at Jing City, she wasn’t happy; her days in Sea City had been too joyful, doing whatever she wanted, even though there wasn’t much she could do. Coming to Jing City felt like having her limbs cut off.
The Xu Family was very enthusiastic towards her, but the Girl in the painting was not very interested.
"She is a bit slow and also mute," Yu Qingqing added from the side, "Probably no one was looking after her, that’s why she came to seek refuge with cousin."
Only then did the Xu Family restrain their enthusiasm, but Father Xu’s youngest child Tongtong took a liking to her, showed her his own toy room, and after playing for a few minutes, everything about Sea City and houses was thrown to the back of her mind.
In the following days, Xu Huo didn’t return home until he was sure there were no signs of infectious diseases in his body.
"I noticed that the young girl’s clothes are tattered and worn, and your previous job didn’t make much money." Father Xu handed him a card, "You take her to buy a couple of outfits. You don’t understand a girl’s preferences, so have Qingqing accompany you guys."
"I have savings." Xu Huo declined the card; his account had a recent deposit from the government as a token of gratitude.
"Li Chun," he called for the Girl in the painting.
She immediately left the toys and ran up to him, pointing to the items on the ground to indicate she wanted the same.
"I want that, too," Yu Qingqing squeezed forward.
Xu Huo glanced at her and then turned his head to look at Mother Yu, hiding by the door, "Auntie, you’ll need to watch her."
Mother Yu felt a moment of embarrassment but quickly adjusted her demeanor, stepping forward and slapping Yu Qingqing lightly, "It’s so dangerous outside, what do you need to go out for? How can Xu Huo spare his hands to protect two people?"
After speaking, she turned towards Xu Huo, "You better go quickly, the sooner you go, the sooner you’ll return."
Xu Huo left with the Girl in the painting.
"Why does that woman smile at you if she doesn’t like you?" the Girl in the painting voiced her confusion.
"Her face is only smiling, her heart is not," Xu Huo said.
The Girl in the painting nodded, then turned her head and pressed her face against the car window to watch the passing scenery.
The streets had begun to see more pedestrians in the past few days as the country stabilized, and the busiest areas of Jing City had reopened their doors. Xu Huo directly took the Girl in the painting to a shopping mall, allowing her to pick the things she needed.
The Girl in the painting happily shopped for two hours, and after leaving the mall, the two arrived at a construction site that was yet to be completed.
"What are we doing here?" the Girl in the painting typed while nibbling on ice cream.
"You’re going to help me practice," Xu Huo parked the car and took a distance of over ten meters from her, "I will attack you, and you can fight back."
The Girl in the painting pointed at the nearby concrete steel building.
"You can go in."
As soon as she finished speaking, the Girl in the painting ran towards the building.
Xu Huo followed suit, at the same time maneuvering the musical strings to intersect in front of her!
As the Girl in the painting faced the oncoming musical strings, her speed did not decrease; instead, she turned into a piece of paper mid-air, floating sideways to avoid the strings. After dodging, she landed back on her feet and resumed her run towards the construction building.
Xu Huo swung his sword, and the crimson Sword Qi turned into a cutting surface that instantly pressed up to her face.
The Girl in the painting seemed startled and hastily leaped backward, but the Sword Qi still sliced off one of her little fingers.
She didn’t bother about her finger turning back into a piece of paper and immediately threw several bags toward the construction building, transforming back into a sheet of paper herself at the same time the bags flew out, carried by the bags into the building.
Once inside the construction building, the Girl in the painting stood up again, and the shopping bags on the ground twisted into pieces on their own, floating like blades around her. As Xu Huo stepped in, she flung all the hardened paper scraps at him!
"Ding Ding Ding!" The sound of minute fragments rained down on the Bull Shield like droplets. Xu Huo dodged the finer assault, and with a move of his hand, short arrows circulated around the building, shooting towards the Girl in the painting.
The scattered paper scraps around the Girl in the painting seemed to possess sensing abilities. As the Flying Arrows approached, she immediately detected them and used the paper scraps to shoot at the arrows, altering their direction.
However, the Flying Arrow was a homing attack tool; even though its speed was reduced by the Paper Knife, it could not be stopped from flying towards her.
She stepped back a few paces, gathering the scattered fragments to form a shield in front of her, but she wasn’t expecting the Flying Arrow to suddenly change direction and loop around from the side.
The Girl in the painting’s eyes widened as she decisively slapped down at the Flying Arrow.
"Slap!" The Flying Arrow was indeed knocked to the ground by her!
It seemed it was only then that she realized she possessed this ability. With a smile on her face and bubbling with excitement, she ran towards Xu Huo.
In aerial combat, although Xu Huo could use his strings to change position, he was nowhere near as flexible as the Girl’s paper. And in hand-to-hand combat, even though the Girl had not learned to fight, she could change the hardness of her body at will, turning herself into metal if she wished.
Xu Huo had no advantage in either approach, so he had to maintain his distance.
The Bull Shield could not protect his body without blind spots. Despite his ability to predict the trajectory of the flying paper, the limitations of his speed meant he could not completely avoid them.
So, in less than half a minute, he had accumulated several scrapes on his body.
Along the way, he had tried to retaliate, but hardened paper knives did not catch fire easily, and even when one or two did ignite, they couldn’t spread to the other papers.
"Ignite!" He leaped outside the construction site and set the Girl in the painting on fire.
The Girl who followed him was instantly engulfed by the flames. She struggled, falling to the ground, rolling in agony.
Xu Huo watched her for two seconds, then went to the car to fetch a fire extinguisher.
The fire extinguisher quickly doused the flames, and the person who had been rolling on the ground became a charred, wrinkled piece of paper stuck to the ground.
"Get up and work," Xu Huo threw a pebble at her body.
The Girl in the painting didn’t move, as if she had lost her life force.
Xu Huo set down the fire extinguisher and stepped forward, just about to lift her up, when the Girl’s body wrapped around his arm and climbed up, instantly transforming back into human form, her palm pressing against his throat!
By now her palm had hardened into a Paper Knife. Xu Huo crisply grabbed her wrist, flipped it outward, drew the Crimson Sword with his other hand, and sliced her in half!
The two floating pieces of paper remained separated for less than a second before merging again. The Girl in the painting landed, turned into a human, rushed to the side, and smashed through a wall, kicking the fallen wall debris at Xu Huo!
Xu Huo swung his sword to divide the wall debris, then was immediately met with a dense storm of Paper Knives. He raised the Bull Shield and charged towards the Girl in the painting, facing the direction from which the Paper Knives flew.
Seeing him run over, the Girl in the painting, bubbling with excitement, mimicked his posture and ran at him. The two collided in an open area, the Girl reverting to paper from the impact and gently floating back half a meter, while Xu Huo crashed into a load-bearing wall a few meters away. Before he could hit the ground, the Girl, along with her Paper Knives, were already bearing down on him!
