Chapter 171: Chapter 171 There is Only One Goal
"The appearance of wormholes signifies that the external environment of a certain space has begun to change, and the people who adapt to this change the fastest are the Evolvers. However, this disrupts the normal evolutionary process of humans, thus resulting in various aftereffects, such as cannibalism."
"But as long as one endures the initial stage and obtains the Potion, these symptoms can be alleviated."
"If this is a natural evolutionary phenomenon, then why did no players emerge in Fairy Tale City later on?" Xu Huo looked at her.
"This isn’t difficult to explain. After a period of sharp increase, the number of Evolvers will drop, so many game zones later employed special methods to foster new players. But the majority of Fairy Tale City’s population died, and it’s normal for the few survivors not to produce any new players," said Sun Jirou with conviction.
A few seconds of silence later, Xu Huo said, "You mean to say, because Wormhole Points appeared, the spatial material changed, and normal people in this environment naturally underwent transformations."
If the appearance of Evolvers was due to this reason, could the organization that developed Dimensional Rift or any other group control this process?
This was indeed difficult to say.
The evolutionary process had two outcomes, either becoming an Alien or dying from illness. The number of Aliens in Fairy Tale City was astonishingly high. He didn’t believe that simply with Potions one could produce so many Aliens in a short time, suggesting the possibility of artificial control.
Assuming this speculation was correct, then someone had deliberately caused Fairy Tale City to become what it was today.
Turning a large city into a Mutant Breeding Zone, was it because the number of players had drastically decreased?
Upon entering the game, the Evolvers and players were considered to be the most valuable assets of each zone. Losing players was like losing value. Ordinary humans might even be considered less significant than Aliens to the game. Hence, from the perspective of the Transdimensional Being, it wouldn’t be a bother or a loss to demolish a regular game zone to establish a breeding area.
Thinking along these lines made things clear, and Granny Bai’s claim that "Zone 014 would be safe from harm if a large number of players emerged within a short period" also made perfect sense.
The catastrophe of Zone 014 was caused by a Super Prop; he wondered what caused it in Fairy Tale City...
"...I’m asking you a question." Tao Chengxin waved her hand in front of his eyes, "When did you guess the method to clear the game? And how did you know that this instance was set up for the players of Fairy Tale City?"
Xu Huo pulled his thoughts back and looked up at the three people staring at him, "At Delicious Sausage Shop, when the government hall player gave us the prop."
"There were signs even before that."
"The government hall and Granny Bai are sworn enemies, but people from the government hall do not dare to enter and exit Fairy Tale City at will. The owner of Delicious Sausage Shop would rather give us a prop than leave his dwelling, which shows that they fear the players controlling Fairy Tale City."
"The three tasks for the instance could be accomplished as long as either Granny Bai or someone who knew about the pollution from twenty years ago appeared. Regarding the pollution, Granny Bai clearly didn’t tell the whole truth, but she personally promised us a safe passage through the instance. Given her capabilities, there’s no need for her to deceive us, which proves my earlier guess that ’the correct story’ doesn’t have to be entirely true was right."
"Granny Bai also had no intention of harming the instance players, and the instance tasks were so simple. Plus, Fairy Tale City stands in opposition to the government hall, which employs players who are not squeamish about meat or vegetables and use extremely cruel players. Comparing the two, it should be evident that while holding Fairy Tale City, its players are also protecting it."
"But she led us to the Cannibal Player from the government hall," countered Sun Jirou. "If she had no ill intentions, why did she send us to our doom?"
"Didn’t I tell you? There might be people from the government hall mixed in with the players," Tao Chengxin replied to her.
"That’s a small possibility. If the government hall really sent low-level players into the copy, and they signaled each other, then the players who come out alive from these places might include government hall players," Xu Huo explained, "But we can’t rule out those who are lucky enough to escape. As a high-level player, Granny Bai should have her own way of judging."
Sun Jirou and Tang Yuan shivered simultaneously, thinking back to the interrogation under the effect of the prop.
"But isn’t this very unjust for us, the copy players?" Tang Yuan couldn’t help but say, "Shen Tai died for nothing."
"Reason with a copy boss?" Tao Chengxin looked at them incredulously, "Are you guys out of your minds?"
"It’s not that their minds are the problem, but that they’re bullying the weak and fearing the strong," Xu Huo stated somewhat coldly, "Because compared to the Cannibal Players who kill without batting an eye, Granny Bai is more reasonable, or else they should go and seek revenge on the real murderers."
Grinding her teeth, Sun Jirou’s eyes suddenly reddened, "Nice words, but what kind of good person are you? From the beginning on the tour bus, to later at Bear’s Paw Restaurant, you were her target!"
Granny Bai first gave Xu Huo discount coupons for Bear’s Paw Restaurant and Beauty Aromatherapy Shop, then, transformed into a guide, she told him about Bear’s Paw Restaurant and Long-Nosed Nut Pie; it was actually him she was scheming against. But he, in order to complete the game task, led others into the trap!
No sooner had she spoken than her hatred turned into towering rage. With a raise of her hand, the floor of the small wooden hut suddenly shook violently. Then the boards cracked and spikes three inches long grew from beneath, spewing white smoke like red-hot branding irons!
"Hell’s Judgment!"
With Sun Jirou’s shout, the spikes under Xu Huo’s feet suddenly grew to two meters long, piercing his clothes as he dodged!
"Damn!" Tao Chengxin, standing close by, nearly got hurt by accident and hurriedly stuck his fishing rod into the wall to hang himself in mid-air.
Xu Huo, clutching at the piano strings, leapt up, dodging the constantly growing spikes while using Flying Arrows to distract Sun Jirou; he held a lighter in his hand, but hesitated to set fire.
"What are you spacing out for, burn her!" Tao Chengxin, hanging in mid-air, shouted, "This woman is too unreasonable, and to think you even saved her once at Building Blocks MoMo Shop."
Dodging the Flying Arrows, Sun Jirou said bitterly, "Would he have saved me if I hadn’t mentioned I had a clue?"
After speaking, she closed her ten fingers together, and the spikes that grew in twos and threes suddenly became more than ten in number, in the blink of an eye turning the roof into a hornet’s nest!
After the roof was flipped open, Xu Huo got out of the hut and looked around, only to find the surrounding forest warping, causing the ground around the hut to slowly undulate as well as if water was flowing beneath it.
While he was distracted, Sun Jirou leapt up from below, flinging a handful of Mitsubishi Spikes in her hand, following up a step later with her palms open, revealing several thin lines coming from between them!
Xu Huo parried the Mitsubishi Spikes with his sword and, after retracting his sword, dismissed her hand with a flick of his own, spread his five fingers, and captured her wrists, pulling her back into the house. He casually reached for a potion and sprayed it at her face:
"Hss—!"
