Chapter 1430: Chapter 1431: The Boundary Between Good and Evil

Li Kun believed that Duan Cheng made a good point, "The key to both tasks still lies in the gemstones, but unfortunately, communicators cannot be used in the Fairy Tale World. Otherwise, we could have figured out the situation over in Moon City ahead of time."

Now, the key to completing the two tasks lies in either Jewel City or Moon City. With seven days, if we head to Moon City, it essentially means abandoning the first task.

"We need to think of a legitimate way to enter the castle," Yan Jiayu said, "sneaking in will definitely get us chased down."

"Is there any news about recruiting at the castle?" Xu Huo asked, "Delivering fresh vegetables and fruits to the castle daily should be a channel."

"This is indeed a way, but it takes some time," Duan Cheng nodded. The issue is that we cannot directly replace those who enter and exit the castle. To blend in with these people, we need to build good relationships with the residents.

"I never thought I’d need to look for a job in a Fairy Tale World," Li Kun remarked.

"Aren’t you Bounty Hunters?" Yan Jiayu asked, "Don’t you need to go out with others during the day to catch thieves?"

"That requires knowing information about the gemstones and the thieves first," Duan Cheng glanced at her.

"Didn’t three thieves appear last night?" Yan Jiayu said naturally, "If we catch the thief that broke into the castle, can’t we enter the castle openly?"

Li Kun and Duan Cheng exchanged a look, unexpectedly finding some logic in it.

But this also has its uncertainties. According to what they heard before, players who brought back "thieves" and gemstones didn’t manage to enter the castle.

"At least that person broke into the castle last night and definitely took something out. Even if it’s not the gemstone from before, other things would still be stolen goods," Yan Jiayu said confidently.

"Are you planning to catch someone too?" Duan Cheng asked Xu Huo.

"Split up," Xu Huo said, "We have a performance tonight, and preparations need to be made during the day. If we can’t catch last night’s player or disguise ourselves as delivery merchants to enter the castle, this is another preparation. Perhaps the King would like to see a circus performance from out of town."

Though it seemed quite unlikely and even if successful, it would probably consume most of their time to complete the task, Duan Cheng and Li Kun did not object. Since they had nothing to lose, if Xu Huo managed to pave this path, they would only need to disguise themselves as circus members to follow into the castle, saving a lot of trouble.

After some discussion, they decided that Xu Huo would go according to the original plan to purchase supplies, Yan Jiayu and Duan Cheng would pursue last night’s player, and Li Kun would look for a job.

The four of them parted ways on the street. Xu Huo followed the map given by a resident of Jewel City and had already bought a cart to place the items he purchased. To make the night performance more reasonable, he added some puppets, plush toys, and pinwheels commonly played with by children.

Although the residents of Jewel City had returned to their normal lives during the day, the main topic was still last night’s thieves. Xu Huo listened as he walked and occasionally stopped to chat while buying things.

"Why are there so many thieves coming in and out recently, and even breaking into the castle? Could it be that there are bad people inside the castle?" Xu Huo tentatively asked.

The residents he spoke to all laughed, "It’s absolutely impossible for criminals to hide in the castle. Once they commit a crime, their body is marked with a criminal’s brand, so everyone can recognize him at a glance."

As for how they could tell, they were vague, but this vagueness wasn’t due to deliberate concealment. Rather, they found it self-evident that they could "recognize a criminal at first sight", just like they could immediately tell if the person in front of them was from Jewel City or an outsider.

"Could the thieves have escaped outside the city?" Xu Huo asked again.

The residents of Jewel City shared the same concerns and added, "If they escape outside the city, we can’t bring them to justice."

"Exactly," someone else said, "People who have committed crimes cannot re-enter the city, and the lost items can never be recovered."

"As long as we can keep the criminals out," residents were adept at comforting themselves. With faces soon full of hope, they said, "Jewel City has always been peaceful."

Xu Huo carried the cart to the next location, where he encountered a merchant who had been to Moon City. He asked if the escaped criminals had gone to Moon City and posed a danger there.

The merchant apparently had the same concern because Moon City and Jewel City had different laws for treating criminals. Although the ultimate fate of criminals was death, last year, after the new King took the throne in Moon City, some "criminal acts" were abolished, such as accidentally entering someone else’s house, accidentally stepping on someone else’s flowers, or whipping animals.

Especially the bit about whipping animals, the merchant seemed quite indignant, "Animals are humans’ good friends. If they bite back at their owner, there must be special reasons. How can we recklessly hit them!"

Note that in Jewel City, there are only two concepts for animals: one category is poultry, raised specifically for eating, and the other is livestock, half as pets and half as labor. The merchant was referring to the latter.

As for other creatures like snakes, insects, rats, and ants, they generally only exist in the wild, and people’s views about them in the instance world are no different from the outside world.

This point illustrates that Jewel City has a clear standard of good and evil, and that dividing line must not be crossed by anyone.

Of course, when mentioning this, one cannot help but talk about children. In fairy tales, children often do things that violate rules due to their innocence, requiring a certain time even after education. This instance world doesn’t have all-encompassing robotic protection like the Eye of Platinum, so they have made a concession: children are not considered criminals for violating rules until they reach a certain age, including things like murder.

Of course, children in the Fairy Tale World wouldn’t be as evil as to commit murder. The most common offenses are sneaking into other people’s houses to play, taking adults’ things, or lying to deceive others—none of which usually have severe consequences.

Then, upon reaching the prescribed age, the children would have learned from the adults what can be done and what constitutes a crime, and they officially step into a new stage, becoming one of the guardians of the rules.

Interestingly, the laws of Jewel City are not public; the only legal document is kept inside the King’s Castle.

In other words, Jewel City doesn’t proactively tell outsiders what actions are criminal, nor is there a way for outsiders to know what shouldn’t be done. But once a crime is committed, everyone suddenly knows someone has broken the law, and it is only during the execution when it will be disclosed.

"A sane person clearly knows which actions are permissible and which infringe on others. There’s no need to write that down, right?" the shopkeeper said with a smile to Xu Huo.
