Chapter 1428: Chapter 1429: Applause for Him
"There aren’t as many players in Jewel City as I imagined," Li Kun remarked again.
"It might be because the difficulty of clearing Jewel City is quite high, so they went to Moon City instead." Xu Huo looked at him, "What are your plans next?"
"On the way, Duan Cheng and I probed the public facilities on the streets and tried the tavern as well, but we haven’t found any props yet," Li Kun said. "Actually, whether or not we clear it is secondary; the main thing is to find out where the props might exist."
Based on known examples of naturally occurring props in the game, they are usually found in inconspicuous places, such as one among a pile of tools, or among daily-use items still in use, even in garbage heaps — though it’s unknown who would be bored enough to rummage through trash. But this means the props themselves might look very ordinary, with no distinctive features, making it hard to identify them at a glance.
This way, the range is too broad; who can say for sure that none of the gemstones paving the streets contain any?
Inspecting the entire city in a short time is impossible, especially when free entry to households might be deemed as a criminal act.
"Are you planning to go to the King’s Castle?" Xu Huo asked.
This was currently the most "efficient" method, as it allowed them to search for props in the castle while possibly investigating the gemstone theft issue.
"We have to wait until deep into the night to take action." Li Kun paused for a moment, then asked, "How long do you plan to stay here?"
"I intend to gather information at the performance area," Xu Huo said, "maybe there will be clues; then we can meet outside the King’s Castle in the evening."
Li Kun had no objection, nodded, and left.
Not long after, Yan Jiayu returned with an accurate message, which was that no matter how outsiders modified or disguised themselves, the residents of Jewel City could always recognize them.
"Everyone in the city knows each other. Even if they modify their appearance to mimic someone from here, residents would just perceive them as out-of-towners who happen to look alike."
"However, it’s possible to disguise as a resident, but in doing so, people around you immediately start talking to you. While we sound no different from the Jewel City people, they can instantly tell. I saw a player who got caught on the street, and he only managed to get away by claiming he just looked like that resident."
She paused, "Additionally, Jewel City’s people have another form of exclusion: the player who pretended to be a resident hinted they were in search of relatives, yet none of the residents believed them."
"Everyone in the city knows each other’s backgrounds. It’s impossible to impersonate their relatives," Xu Huo said.
Yan Jiayu nodded, "At times like this, the people of Jewel City aren’t as easy to talk to as they were when we saw them this afternoon."
As she spoke, she touched her chin, "Both adults and children have a very firm understanding of themselves; it’s indeed a Fairy Tale World."
The topic ended here, and Xu Huo brought up that Li Kun had been by, to which Yan Jiayu was unsurprised: "If it were that easy to catch the thief, it wouldn’t be a Rank-C Copy."
"Are we really going to perform on stage tonight?" She was quite interested in this.
Since we’ve set our identities, we naturally should act according to them. Xu Huo nodded, "I’ll perform magic."
"I can perform with Da Mao!" Yan Jiayu got excited, taking out a big pile of small toys and props to choose from, "How many acts should we prepare? I can do twenty all at once!"
"Not that many," Xu Huo laughed, "today isn’t the formal performance; just show off a bit, and tomorrow night is the real show. We still need to buy the required items during the day tomorrow."
Yan Jiayu blinked, understood, and then asked, "Have you found any props at the performance area yet? Did Li Kun and his group find anything?"
"I haven’t, and I’m not sure about Li Kun and his group," Xu Huo said.
Yan Jiayu picked up a bread from the table, "They’re not honest. Even if they find a prop, I guess they won’t share it with us."
"If they don’t share with us, we won’t share with them either."
Everyone knew before entering the instance that without a binding contract, whoever finds a good prop might not take it out for equal distribution; rather, it’s an excuse to forge alliances since they still need to clear the stage together.
"We’ll see if they honor their word then," Xu Huo agreed.
Yan Jiayu took a bite of bread, then squinted her eyes in enjoyment, "It’s really delicious. You should try it too."
Xu Huo picked up a red, juice-dripping fruit, bit into it, and the fragrant, sweet flesh burst immediately in his mouth with a top-notch texture.
Yan Jiayu also tried one, spitting out the seed inside, "I wonder if it can be planted if taken outside."
"Trying will tell," the two of them then finished all the fruits in the basket with the seeds divided, each taking half.
This scene was seen by a Jewel City resident who came to call them for dinner, the elderly lady’s smile filled with kind brilliance, "Hungry, right? Dinner will be ready soon."
As her voice fell, a clattering noise came from the open-air audience seating of the performance venue; the residents of Jewel City first set up tables, chairs, and utensils, then fragrant and rich food was served, the dishes stacking up a long table formed by several tables put together.
The adults called Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu over and weren’t polite, pulling them to sit by the table to share the food and wine.
There was fruit wine on the table, not easy to get drunk on, so nearly everyone drinking came over to clink glasses with Xu Huo, repeatedly expressing their welcome.
After they were full of food and drink, they showcased their talents, singing and dancing. The children also performed plays they learned at school in their childish voices.
The atmosphere was lively, and Xu Huo, riding on the mood, performed two small "magic" tricks: one involving taking an object from thin air, and another with a levitation act.
Applause thundered in the courtyard, and he immediately indicated that a formal performance could be arranged for tomorrow, but because of insufficient tools, they needed to purchase them during the day for the show to start at night.
The people of Jewel City enthused about their excitement while suggesting they could take Xu Huo and his group shopping.
"The needed items aren’t many but are rather scattered, so just tell us where to buy them," Xu Huo, with a gentle smile, said: "And please help spread the word a lot."
This struck a chord with Jewel City’s residents. Both adults and children promised to help out and even offered to set up the performance area, letting them shop worry-free. They also handed over a hand-drawn map outlining the market’s location.
Most shops in Jewel City are run individually, and many are scattered. Thus, under Xu Huo’s inquiries, more places gradually circled out on the map.
After handling the formalities, Yan Jiayu then used a bubble machine hidden in her sleeve to "conjure up" a courtyard full of colored bubbles, putting a period on the night’s welcome banquet.
The lively scene took a long while to dissolve, and deep into the night, once the nearby residents had turned off their lights and gone to bed, Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu left the performance area.
