Chapter 1427: Chapter 1428: A Relatively Real World

The residents of Jewel City and the players have distinct differences in appearance, but this doesn’t mean players can’t change their looks to disguise themselves as inhabitants of Jewel City. However, is merely altering one’s appearance and attire enough to blend in with the citizens of Jewel City?

Not necessarily. If disguises were so effective, those few players shouldn’t have been hanged.

"Do you think the people of Jewel City have a way to distinguish locals from outsiders?" Yan Jiayu instantly grasped his meaning, "I’ll go out in disguise and give it a try."

Although he didn’t think it was entirely necessary, Xu Huo still agreed and said, "Keep an eye on the other players."

After Yan Jiayu left, Xu Huo stayed in the house for a while before heading to the backstage of the performance venue.

Here, the circus still stored some of the props it had used in the past, along with some old flyers.

The main attractions in the flyers varied each time, but they switched between magic, acrobatics, and animal performances. It was evident that magic was quite popular; about one-third of the flyers over the years advertised magic as the main feature.

After placing the flyers back on the table, he wandered around the area before heading to the back of the stage and pulling open a movable wooden board underneath.

"Haha!" A child’s unique high-pitched laughter came through, as a little bald boy crawled out, revealing a gap-toothed smile, "You caught me!"

This child wasn’t among those who received candy earlier; he must have snuck in while the adults were busy. Xu Huo wiped the dust off his face, "Why are you hiding here by yourself?"

Little Baldy pushed away his hand and replied with a question, "Do you know magic?"

"A bit," Xu Huo nodded, "Do you like magic?"

Little Baldy looked up at him, "Can you make a person appear out of nowhere?"

"That’s a bit difficult," Xu Huo rubbed his chin.

Little Baldy rummaged in his pocket and pulled out two finger-sized gemstones to hand to him, "I’ll give you these gemstones if you can make my mom and dad appear for a while. I want to talk to them."

But after speaking, he clenched his fist and took back the gemstones, saying, "You have to make it happen first; only then will I give them to you."

Xu Huo squatted down to look the boy in the eyes, "Where did your mom and dad go?"

"They were killed by foreign thieves; those people wanted to rob our jewels." Due to Little Baldy’s age, he couldn’t fully grasp the concept of hatred, but he missed his absent parents.

"Were those thieves caught?" Xu Huo asked.

"They were executed." Little Baldy, with an air of maturity, dragged over two small stools used for performances, and after setting them up, said, "Uncles and aunts all say my mom and dad have turned into stars in the sky. Does everyone turn into stars after they die? If that thief also turns into a star, will he still bully my parents?"

Xu Huo sat opposite him, "Do you see how some stars are close to each other while others are far apart? If they all become stars, the thief should be far away from them."

Little Baldy found this reasonable and said, "I hope they indeed turn into stars."

Evidently, the child had his own thoughts and wouldn’t completely believe everything adults said, yet he quickly added, "Can you bring the stars down?"

"That’s also quite hard." Xu Huo thought for a moment and said, "But I recently acquired a magical mirror that lets you see the person you miss the most. However, since it’s a gemstone, it can only be used once, so..."

Little Baldy jumped off the chair and stuffed the gemstones into his hand, "This is a down payment. I can give you two more."

Xu Huo smiled, placing the gemstones back in his hand, "I’ve never used this mirror before, so I’m not sure if it will work... How about this: bring a photo of your parents tomorrow night, and we’ll give it a try. If it works, then I’ll accept your gemstones."

Little Baldy grinned and high-fived him, "It’s a deal then!"

The child hopped away cheerfully, and Xu Huo turned back to gaze down the hallway.

Li Kun emerged from the shadows, cautiously asking, "These people are all NPCs in the instance, plus it’s a fairy tale instance, so they’re not even real people. Isn’t it enough to just brush them off? Why bother so much?"

"In the instance, they are living beings." Xu Huo didn’t elaborate much. Li Kun’s words weren’t wrong, but this couldn’t be treated as a purely fictional world, especially since the players who were hanged were real.

Regardless of whether the players became part of the fairy tale or the fairy tale world became real, it indicated one thing: their environment was relatively authentic. The residents of Jewel City, who seemed beyond normal comprehension, were also real, having inherited all the emotions within this setting.

Based solely on the instance’s background description, this fairy tale world was virtually flawless, and it was nearly impossible for players to find a breakthrough.

"Any leads from the Pudding Tavern?" Xu Huo asked.

"There’s some," Li Kun replied, "Indeed, the King of Jewel City has put a bounty on the thieves, and the capture squad at the tavern was established under the King’s orders. The expenses of the capture squad and revenge are all provided by the King, and the first-hand information on the stolen gems is also public."

"Too little information?" Xu Huo responded.

"Specifically this first-hand information," Li Kun sighed, "It says no one has seen the thief’s face; there was only a footprint left in the garden, and it doesn’t even mention what the stolen gemstones look like."

"A footprint reveals quite a bit of information," Xu Huo said.

"Indeed, but before us, someone already used the footprint to deduce the thief’s height and build, capturing several individuals, but none were the thief."

"If no one has seen the thief, how can they determine whether the captured individuals are thieves?" Xu Huo pondered, "Is the King purposely concealing information about the gemstones?"

"It seems that way," Li Kun replied with some exasperation, "Everyone in Jewel City carries gemstones. Without more detailed information, finding them is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but it’s said that the castle doesn’t use gemstones to identify the thief. The King once saw the thief’s back."

"Some players suggested meeting with the King to understand the specifics, but the response was that the King had fallen ill from grief over the stolen gemstones."

Xu Huo didn’t need to guess to know how the players who went to the tavern felt upon hearing this, "Has anyone tried entering the King’s Castle by other means?"

"Sneaking into the King’s Castle is deemed as being a thief." This was what truly troubled Li Kun. In Jewel City, unless it was semi-open places like taverns or inns, entering without the owner’s invitation could result in being identified as a thief, leading to immediate arrest and execution by the city’s guard squad.

Only a few players ventured into the Pudding Tavern, so up to now, no one has tested what exactly would happen if they violated the law.
