Chapter 1426 - 1427 Sunflower One
Chapter 1426: Chapter 1427 Sunflower One
Altogether, there were seven people; the times of death varied. Perhaps because it’s a fairy tale world, these corpses looked more like dehydrated vegetables, with no horrifying signs of decay. Instead, they retained relatively complete appearances, albeit with rather unpleasant facial expressions.
They had wooden plaques hanging around their necks, listing their crimes. Four out of the seven were theft-related, while the remaining three were for robbery and murder.
Duan Cheng walked around to the back of the corpses and glanced over them, then said to the others, "Players."
"You must be outsiders." An elderly man with a face full of wrinkles walked over, leaning on a cane, and said with a cheerful smile, "The registration place is over there. You’d better go quickly, or you won’t be able to find accommodation after dark."
Xu Huo and his companions stood not far from the city gate. Although it retained the architectural style of a fairy-tale, with whimsy everywhere, the people’s attire wasn’t much different from outside the instance. Overall, it leaned towards a cute style, but their appearances were starkly distinctive.
The people here, whether old or young, appeared extremely peaceful, and their eyes—of various colors—all seemed to convey "kindness." They looked at them warmly, as if completely ignoring the corpses hanging by the city gate.
"This city is truly made entirely of gemstones." Yan Jiayu shaded her eyes as she looked forward. Although the gemstones used to build the streets and houses were chosen for their darker colors, under the sunlight, the entire city sparkled everywhere, which was a bit straining on the eyes over time.
Ignoring this small flaw, Jewel City really was like a world out of a fairy tale. The buildings were primarily round, mostly single-story, giving them a chubby and cute feel. The streets and walls of the houses were decorated with mosaics of flowers, plants, or small animals using different colored gemstones.
There were shops, or for those without shops, small pushcarts or boxes were set up on the street for business. People walking on the streets, whether adults or children, all wore smiles on their faces. They greeted each other and chatted about today’s weather or discussed newly made recipes. Here, even the simple and trivial details of life could become remarkably interesting, as if they were completely unaware of what worry meant.
Four members of the Guard Squad, all dressed in the same Armor, were responsible for maintaining the order of outsiders. Everyone entering the city had to register their identity. After registration, Jewel City would issue an identification document, which allowed for business and tourism, as long as one didn’t enter the King’s Castle. People could move freely elsewhere.
As Xu Huo and the others queued, they noticed some people voluntarily explaining their reasons for coming to Jewel City during registration. The Guard Squad would then inform them which paths were quicker, where there were more places to buy and sell agricultural products, and where to purchase tools. If they really couldn’t figure out the way, the Guard Squad would ask residents for help, and the residents of Jewel City were very willing to lend a hand.
Li Kun noticed a wanted notice posted outside the registration office. His eyes shifted slightly, and during registration, he mentioned he was a Bounty Hunter.
The Guard Squad was delighted and told him that although the King had issued a wanted notice, they had yet to capture the criminal. He could join the civilian organized capture team, which gathered two streets away at Pudding Tavern.
"There are only two instance tasks: either find the gemstone stolen from the King or have Moon City return the gemstone. From the looks of it, the first seems easier. This might be a clue." Duan Cheng also registered as a Bounty Hunter, and the Guard Squad revealed that to catch the gemstone thief, Jewel City had recently enforced a no-exit policy, so the criminal must still be in the city.
"Are you also a Bounty Hunter?" When it was Xu Huo’s turn, the Guard Squad member asked kindly.
Xu Huo shook his head and said, "My name is Sunflower One, and this is my sister Sunflower Two. We were both members of the Polaris Circus. After the circus disbanded, we lost our jobs and wanted to come to Jewel City to make a living."
He then took out a piece of paper and performed a demonstration of telekinesis on the spot.
The Guard Squad member clapped warmly at the performance and carefully informed them that there was a performance venue in the southeast corner of Jewel City, specifically for entertaining circus troupes occasionally arriving from afar.
"Although there’s no circus stationed permanently now, your magic performance will surely be very popular!"
"When you decide on the performance time, don’t forget to invite us to watch."
Like the Guard Squad, the residents of Jewel City had a special enthusiasm for circus performances. When Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu left the registration office, many people gathered around to ask what kind of shows they would perform, offering to take them to the performance venue. They also assured them not to worry about meals and lodging; everyone would contribute a little, ensuring their daily provisions and necessities.
"Thank you, everyone," Xu Huo said gratefully, taking out a handful of candies from his pocket. "These are specialties from our homeland. Please try some if you don’t mind."
The adults looked at them with eyes full of pity and an even more friendly attitude, giving the candies to their children without a second thought.
A considerable number of Jewel City’s residents had gathered around, and Li Kun and Duan Cheng found it hard to squeeze through the crowd. Feeling puzzled, they saw Xu Huo gesturing at them, indicating for a temporary separation.
This was an instance with unknown risks, not to mention other players besides them had registered. Rashly splitting up was disadvantageous for them. Thus, Li Kun was reluctant to agree, but before he could speak, Duan Cheng stopped him with a shake of his head, mouthing words to Xu Huo:
"Meet at the performance venue."
Then Xu Huo and his companion followed the residents of Jewel City, while Li Kun, Duan Cheng, and several other players headed towards Pudding Tavern.
Meanwhile, on their way to the performance venue, Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu were enthusiastically welcomed by the residents, who gave them fruit or snacks. Some elderly women even wanted to share the vegetables they had bought, but Xu Huo declined, saying he had no place to "show his culinary skills." Consequently, they received no fewer than ten dinner invitations, and the residents finally decided to collectively host Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu with a small welcoming party at the performance venue.
In the following two hours, as people came and went, the kind residents not only tidied up a room for them but also laid out clean sheets. Concerned they hadn’t had lunch, they provided bread and juice.
The adults had chores to handle and left after helping, leaving behind some curious children. After receiving candies from Xu Huo, they sat around Yan Jiayu, listening to her tell stories.
Fairy tales were readily available, and after satisfying the children’s curiosity, the two sent them off.
"It seems that neither adults nor children find it problematic to be sentenced to death for theft," Yan Jiayu sighed slightly and asked, "Should we check out the Pudding Tavern?"
"Li Kun and the others will bring the news over," Xu Huo said while smiling and nodding at residents passing by in the distance. "Besides, the first task may not be easier than the second one. The people hanged at the gate included not just players but also ordinary folks."
